Finlandia still on track for Gold.

I feel for Russia. Huge disappointment to lose on home ice like this. Poor guys.

So a consistently 5th place team can finish no lower than 4th place and took out one of hockeys "super powers". Canadian math at it's finest.

Finland. IMO. Poll the world and I'd bet 90% would agree with me.

What kills me is the Finns will lose to the Swedes next, finish 4th and Black Label will hang his hat on that 4th place finish. A whole 1 position higher than what I predicted.

If they win Gold I will fly myself and black label to Finland for a vacation.

Oh, I see so if international hockey was the NHL, then you're wacky canadian theories would be right. We aren't talking 7 game series, we aren't talking Stanley Cup playoffs, we are talking international hockey, international rules, international rink size.

Why not add some goonery to the mix to help the canadians too.

Are you serious? Cause I can't tell?

We're talking 1 game elimination. That has far more importance than the the international rules and ice size. Do you honestly believe Finland would beat Russia over a 7 game series?

I'm saying what would happen in a seven game series is about as relevant to an international tournament as how well they would fare in a texas holdem match or a game of chess.

That's not how the game is played. 1 game elimination is international rules, best of 7 is NHL rules.

And a side note since you seem to be confused on how international hockey works...

If Sweden were to beat Finland, Finland wouldn't automatically fall to 4th place. The winner moves on to the gold medal match, the loser would play for bronze. Just so you know, it will be a single game, not a best of 7 series.

Finland could go onto win this tournament. And that will do nothing to convince me that they're the best team internationally. A 1 game elimination is not a true measure of who the best team is. That's all I'm suggesting.

That Bronze medal game may as well not even be played IMO. Good luck trying to get the players up for that game.

So if Canada wins, we can safely say they are not the best team internationally as well?

I would have no problem with you making that argument. Look how close the last Gold medal game was. Bounce here or there and its a different result.

Wow, too bad for the Russians...all that pressure to win at home and nothing. Putin probably is rounding up the players' families as we speak.

Again, in a one-game match-up, anything can happen.

The fallout from Russia's disastrous hockey performance at the Sochi Games is already turning radioactive.

In a press conference after a 3-1 loss to Finland eliminated Russia from medal contention, the team's coach singled out Alexander Ovechkin for his role in the disappointment.

"I cannot explain" how he only scored once in the team's four Sochi games, Zinetula Bilyaletdinov told reporters Wednesday.

Rob Rossi, a Penguins beat reporter with the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, tweeted that there was "heated friction" between the Russian team's coaches and Ovechkin and fellow NHL star Evgeni Malkin. It was focused on "KHL bias, lines and situational usage," Rossi wrote.

Neither Malkin nor Ovechkin scored after the team's opening game in Sochi.

The team played under enormous pressure at a Winter Olympics on home soil, and the post-game press conference apparently grew tense.

As Brian Costa of The Wall Street Journal noted on Twitter, one Russian reporter challenged Bilyaletdinov over his work behind the bench.

"What is your responsibility? How guilty are you feeling?" Costa quoted the reporter as asking. "Probably Ovechkin and Malkin should have been on (different) lines."
In about an hour you can replace Ovechkin and Malkin with Crosby and Towes.

All you clownz who are "surprised" about Finlandia beating Russia should be banned from this thread.

It's not like Finlandia world domination was unknown around these parts.

Was there a qualification tourney to get in? or did they select the top 12? I had presumed it was top 12 so when I saw the Germans there I was surprised.

Quick making only 11 saves today to win. Was it essentially a 60 minute PP for USA?

The top 9 make the Olympics, the last three must qualify through other tournaments. Latvia, Slovenia, and Austria took those last 3 spots.

He's got his team believing. Then again, didn't Canada have to gut through a crazy game like this in Vancouver to reach the medal rounds?
