I don't think Germany had a disappointing World Cup. They were actually praised all over the German media. I don't think anyone expected them to be in the semis (including myself)

And the German media isn't saying that Italy doesn't deserve the cup.

No, I'm not German.

And I don't think that it was a great post beacuse he does not know what Materazzi didn't say, just like he doesn't know what Materazzi said.

So Materazzi said that he didn't say those things, Zidane said that he did. Why should we believe one but no the other?

Having said that, I'm retiring from this thread.

It's been a great few months leading up to the world cup, and a great world cup with a deserved winner.

Eins und Zwei und Drei und Vier und 50, 74, 90, 2010, ja so stimmen wir alle ein. Mit dem Herz in der Hand, und der Leidenschaft im Bein werden wir Weltmeister sein

He didnt claim to know what Materazzi said, he was just stating the few things which we do know as fact. Not the speculative issues , like what Materazzi and Zidane did or didnt say. Basing opinions and arguments on facts > basing them on speculation & rumours

The point is that it does not matter what he said. Matrix was trying to get under his skin, it worked, and Zidane snapped and pulled one of the most classless acts ever seen on the world stage that is the World Cup tournament. That's pretty much all there is to it...

But I guess enough is enough... WC is over and what's done is done. Now we can start speculating if South Africa is going to get to keep the tournament.

I was trying to find this ABC video for a few days now. It's my favorite world cup moments video, especially when the Italians scored the final penalty kick and started running around the field. It seriously gives me goose bumps.

So many great moments last month, they'll be in our memories for awhile.

The Aussies 3 goals in the waning moments of the Japan match.
Jurgen going crazy celebrating on the sidelines.
Maxi's amazing goal to win the Mexico match in extra time.
Grosso's brilliant bending kick to win the German match with only 1 minute remaining.
Watching the live streaming matches at work.

Fuck the Zidane headbutt. Tournaments been over for 1 week and I still cant stop thinking about that Germany vs Italy game. Best game of the tourney, with the best finish, and arguably the nicest 2 goals/ (clinical execution, passing and shot accuracy) And seeing the look on Grosso's face...wow.

Here it the final couple of minutes to savour over and over

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0Rke4YZdtQ

And the Italian coverage for good measure.

Zidane, Materazzi suspended, fined
Jul. 20, 2006. 09:24 AM
ASSOCIATED PRESS

PARIS — Zinedine Zidane was banned by FIFA for three games Thursday for head-butting Italy's Marco Materazzi during the World Cup final, France's LCI television reported.

Materazzi was suspended for two matches, according to the report.

Both players were also fined.

The information was not immediately confirmed by FIFA in Zurich, Switzerland.

Zidane retired from all soccer after the July 9 World Cup final in Berlin, which Italy won 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 extra-time draw.

It's fair I suppose. Both of them need to grow up a bit.

Ya, the Italian soccer anthem is similar, which is probably why the song caught on.

This video is kinda lame, but its got the italian soccer anthem in it so you can hear the similarities. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2lRFIvnyEE

I also found this article on Jack's reaction to the Italians using his song.

A "Seven Nation Army" Can't Hold Back Italian Soccer

Jack White pleased by adoption of his song by the World Cup champs.

Standing atop the soccer world after their victory over France in the World Cup final, the Italian soccer team adopted "Seven Nation Army" by The White Stripes as their unofficial rallying cry. Team member Francesco Totti led his cohorts in a rousing chant of the song's distinctive guitar riff following their win, reportedly involving 500,000 adoring fans. Alessandro Del Piero and Marco Materazzi even joined The Rolling Stones during the band's stop in Milan -- where "Seven Nation Army" was again trotted out, with customized "We are the champion"-style lyrics added.

Jack White has been known to be a little fickle about how his music is used, so what did he think of these frolicking Italians turning his tune into a sports anthem?

"I am honored that the Italians have adopted this song as their own," White said. "Nothing is more beautiful than when people embrace a melody and allow it to enter the pantheon of folk music. As a songwriter it is something impossible to plan. Especially in modern times. I love that most people who are chanting it have no idea where it came from. That's folk music."

White was apparently not asked whether he would be keeping the song on set lists during future tours in France. But a tour of any sort for The White Stripes appears to be on the back burner for a while longer, as White recently announced that his next project would likely be a second record with his other band, The Raconteurs.

Question about extra time in world cup games.

In the knockout stage of the world cup, games do not end in a tie, so if the score is tied after the 90 minute regulation and stoppage time, it goes to an extra period. I know there is no sudden death, and the period will continue until its completion, however my question is, if a team gets the lead after ONE period does it still go to a 2nd extra period.

Reason asking is because I was playing FIFA World cup 06 last night. I was Germany playing against Spain. The score was tied 1 - 1 at the end of regulation and then I was asked if I would like to end it in a draw or choose to go to extra time or go directly to penalty kick. I chose extra time.

I ended up scoring 2 minutes into the extra period so the score was 2 - 1. The period then ended and I was still up 2 - 1. I was thinking that the game should have been over right there with me getting the win, but instead the game automatically went to a 2nd extra period. Is this correct? I thought the only way the game continues after the 1st extra period is if the teams are still tied?

There is no "golden goal", so you have to play out the entire overtime periods.

So its two overtime periods regardless if one team is leading after the end of the first one? (see example below).

End of Regulation: 1:1
end of first overtime: 2:1

A golden goal ends the game as soon as a team scores in OT.

When a "silver goal" is scored, the game ends after that half of OT. (if it's the first half, there won't be a second half)

I'm sure there are options for silver/golden goals in the game. I don't even know if they are used by FIFA anymore, but I'm pretty positive that the silver goal is still used in UEFA compettitions.
