Penalty kicks, especially in that situation, are 99% mental. Funny things happen when humans are under so much pressure.

I've frozen myself before.. Too afraid to miss the net completely.. Nothing worse then not even getting the shot on net..

We had a little in-Boston World Cup tournament this weekend - I was playing for USA, and we had teams from England, Ireland and Brazil in it too (all legitimate foreigners too, none of that watered down garbage )

We beat Brazil in the first game and faced Ireland in the final, which went to PKs:

We missed our first three, they hit two of first three, we went on to win anyway, after about 10 shots. All the misses were complete headcase misses, not nice saves on shots, just awful awful shots

Our goalie dove and blocked the last Irish guy's shot, shooter claimed keeper moved early, linesman didn't see it so they ordered a re-kick. Shot same place and keeper saved it again. USA FTW

"Legidimate"? Swiss blew it...big time. Ukraine deserved the game...too bad they have no chance against Italy.

I think that Ukraine- Swiss game was the most boring game I've ever watched. It didn't look like either team even wanted to score until the third penalty kick.

A Swiss player (Steller - plays in Koeln, which is where yesterdays game was) is pissed at the German fans because they were singing "Lukas Podolski" and "We're going to Berlin without Holland" during the Switzerland - Ukraine game.

What else does he expect from the fans who pay so much money to be at the round of 16 game and don't even get to watch World Cup quality football. At least there is some entertainment during the Germany games.

How are they overated?

Lets not forget they have won this tournament 3 times and are always considered a threat. The way I see it they played 1 bad game (US) and easily handled a Ghana team that is better than most expected and a Czech team that was ranked #2 in the world.

If they weren't a man down vs Australia I'm confident they wouldn't have needed a PK to win. Italy never wins with flash, but they usually win.

Having said that, I see them losing to the Germans in the semi's if they get by Ukraine.

Go Argentina

I'm sure you mean in the sense of their ability to win the CUP; certainly they are worthy of being in the top eight world-wide. As far as winning the Cup I agree that this Italy team will not win it all. It will most likely be a Germany - Brazil final with the German's winning at home.

I'd like to add. If Luca Toni could start finding the net with some sort of regularity and start looking like Serie A's leading scorer Italy will beat the German's.

He's getting close.

Obviously they're a good team, one of the top 8, but I don't think that they can win it all. The road to the quarters (semis) has been pretty easy, and I don't see them having problems with Ukraine. I would much rather see the top teams play against each other than the underdogs. A Germany win against Argentina is IMO a lot more worth than a win against Mexico.

I think once they play a top team, their weaknesses will be exposed. They remind me of Juventus.

They handlily beat the Germans in a freindly earlier this year. I know, just a friendly.

Yup, just wait. If they lose to the German's homefield will be to blame. Nothing more.
