I wonder if it's worth picking up a 996 Turbo right now. Every 911 Turbo before it sky rocketing.

 

Not sure what pricing is crazier, air-cooled 911s or houses around here

On a bit of a tangent - now is a great time to have $15-25k to spend on a used sports car.

You can get into 996 Carreras, E46 M3s, Mustang Terminators, C5 Z06s and a bunch more - all sweet cars (IMO) and affordable to many.

 

It is crazy how much the prices on air cooled Porsches are going up. Sad almost as they are reaching the price of never being able to afford them.

That 1994 is beautiful.

 

i'd still like to get a whale tail in my birth year to keep as a collectible...

Someone asked me why I wouldn't buy a new Nissan. I read a comment that summed it up well.

 

07-08 and even some 2011 911 Turbos are still somewhat affordable, for what they are ($50-80k or so, which falls under the "affordable" column for any non-996 911 Turbo)......

Alright guys, I need some advice...

I'm looking at getting a new car that's more fun to drive/interesting than the Jeep and came across a 535xi m-sport wagon that I think looks friggin awesome. Question I have is how is the long term reliability of the N54/N55 motors? Am I going to get fvcked over a bed of coals without lube if I buy this car? It has excellent records and 91k on the clock. Seems like a lot of work was done recently (documented) so I'm hoping a lot is good to go but still want to know what else I'm getting myself into here...

 

 

A sale after a lot of recent work always throws flags for me.

You make fun of my German wagon everyday. Don't get it! I would never get a BMW with 91k miles on it.

 

At that price wouldn't it be a wash to import one from Japan?

 

Just looking through that eBay seller's history, it's interesting what they seem to be moving. A lot of items that are, uh, let's say "popular black market items" or often "sold out of the trunk or a car" in "that area of town you go to when you want to buy stuff that might not be 100% legit".

That GT-R would be great for a pescetarian, because it's fishy as hell.

 

Yeah you guys are right. I passed on it. The asking price was insane too, especially for a non-manual example. He wanted $12k over KBB lol. Other than the MSport package and a few light mods (lowered and nice wheels), it had nothing special.

I've already been there and felt the bitter cold of those waters...my E46 had 130k on it when I sold it.

 

Still moving along at 125k on my 335i. My son's E46 325Ci runs nicely at 160k.

It's not that they don't run well at those ages and mileages but it's more so the amount of effort and money it takes to make that happen. At 100k-110k on the E46 it needed new CV axles, front control arms+bushings, steering rack, cooling system, window regulators, steering wheel clock spring, etc etc etc. That's the part that sucks. The engine and transmission worked like a dream though.

 

I get it. But, not to be outdone, my wife's 2003 Honda Pilot has required more than $6k of work in the past six months...more than the damn thing is worth at this point.

 

FYI. his top speed is 58mph... you need to do a fair race from 0-58.

 

Of course; buy it, mod the hell out of it, instant supercar.

But, still a long way to go for the 25 year rule status to apply. We're just getting towards the end of all R32s being fully legal in another year and a half.

Actually, in this instance, it wasn't a timing belt. Rather, it was a steering rack, leaking CV boots, bad power steering pump, worn suspension bushings, leaking AC, etc.

As to your second question, I'd have to actually look up the records, but we've had several large (e.g. >$750) repairs in the last couple of years.

I won't argue that the German cars cost more to maintain; they do. But, the complexity of the modern vehicle from any source has made them much more expensive to maintain and repair across the board, regardless of country of origin. Gone are the days when, as a teenager, I could go out to my '76 Datsun pickup and change out a set of piston rings with only a rudimentary set of tools and a guide book from Pep Boys.

I dont know what your talking about, i can still do that with my Honda...... Lawn Mower Only took me 20 min and 1 socket size to pull the trans out to fix it. (yea, imagine that, a honda with a trans problem)

 

Did you install the Accord V6 trans?

 

My lawn mower is more of a Regera mower in that it doesn't have a transmission. Instead it just uses brute force to move.

 

I really want an electric lawn mower for common courtesy ...i wake up at the ass crack of dawn on saturdays and have to wait to mow till like 8...what feels like an eternity
