On an unrelated note one of the volume buttons broke on my iPhone 5. I brought it to Apple and it was covered under Applecare no questions asked. Very good service, and now I've got a brand new phone for free.

They gave a new phone? They typically give refurbs, especially for a phone that is soon to be two years old. Did they pull it out of a brown box or the standard white retail boxes that new phones come in? They service their phones so well that their refurbs look like brand new phones.

Well maybe I am wrong. He actually didn't say and I just assumed new. I guess they did such a good job I couldn't tell.

Overall I am still happy.

FWIW, you'd never be able to distinguish a refurb from a new phone on the outside. They look and work good as new.

Refurbs on phones don't seem to give problems. I've gotten iPhones and bought an Android all refurbbed and no problems.

^^^

from what I hear, refurb phones go through a lot more intensive testing....

with my original iphone the silent rocker button broke off within a month of ownership...I took it back to the store and they were pulling a "refurbed" phone from the box...this is how the conversation went down:

me: why is this box different?
him: its a refurb phone
me: do you sell refurb phones?
him: yes, for 400 bucks
me: well I just paid 600 for mine less than a month back. I would need a new phone or a refurb and 200 bucks credit
him: but thats not our policy
me: dont care...i paid over 200 more for the same phone a month back

I ended up walking out with a new phone...

after another 4-5 months, phone had some software issues....they exchanged out with a refurb phone....since it was almost 6 months since the new phone, I didnt complain....and did that refurb phone work like a charm....

Why do I love apple...Walked into my local apple store with my wife on Tuesday. Walked into pick up something, but also wanted to just ask about my wife's apple leather case (I had no issue exchanging my leather case in the past) ...which looked like crap and part of it somehow broke causing the case to be loose. I had the receipt with me and everything. As soon as the manager came out and saw it was the case he shut it down and became unreceptive...acting like a smug arrogant cock. For once, I didn't escalate it I said I would write an email instead...he stayed smug.

So, it stuck with me and yesterday morning I wrote a long and well thought email about customer service. Basically, I don't mind that they wouldn't do anything, i figured as much, but I care that a manager acted like such a dick...what if I had been someone new to apple possibly looking to invest more into product line, that would have turned me off instantly.

I addressed the email to Tim Cook's address and hit send. Never thinking I would hear anything from it.

Got a phone call today from that store's head manager. My email had been passed down from corporate to regional to her, and she wanted to ask me about my experience in order to help better train the manager and apologize. And to try and make it up she wants to exchange my wife's case.

Its like the time I switched from the G4 chip to Intel and my final cut suite wouldn't work anymore, and I sent a letter to Steve Job's email...and was contacted by corporate and next day shipped a whole new FCP suite for no added cost.

There is a reason I'm a fan boy...where else can you truly feel like you're being listened and see results.

^^^ hahaha thats awesome....

First week of 2012, I received an email from Tim Westergren, the founder of Pandora...it was just a regular "Happy New Year" mail and back then Pandora was one of the few internet radio app...

anyway I replied back (of course not expecting to hear anything) and mentioned how I love the app and the idea....I am sure it would kill Music Piracy and downloads since I can listen to new songs on my phone and wish their list was bigger and updated more frequently....

I got an email back from him address those issues and I was like WOW...on top of that he wanted to send me a tshirt (again a nice gesture)...I mentioned that I would just give the shirt to the wifey....so they ended up sending me 2 tshirts (one male and one female)....

That incident made me a fan

I have never addressed an email to a CEO but that is hella cool for them to respond and take the matter seriously....am sure quite a few peeps do that....

Sarlacc- that's great. Sometimes I feel like Apple is one of the few companies still around that actually cares about their customer service.

A few years back I posted on Apple's support forums complaining about a poor customer service experience I had (my MacBook Pro sat in the Apple store for almost a week before being sent out for repair). A guy from Apple customer service read my post, called me to apologize, and gave me a free year of MobileMe (when that was still around). Very unexpected but really made me a happy customer.

Yes their service is top tier. They are very fair and liberal on their return policy. The fact that you can schedule appts from an app is brilliant considering that the other manufacturers don't even have onsite support. And I dealt with the Microsoft store and needed to speak to manager. That rude soft dick fuck never came down after I waited a half hour so they'll never get my money especially since their prices typically suck.

So I did what I said I'd never do...I got an iPhone. Had no choice. My job is now requiring 24/7 email access. They only support iPhone with their management software.
At least I didn't have to pay for it.
It's a 5 on Sprint.

What are decent useful apps I should look at?

I can haz your data?
IPhones allow extraction of personal data: Research
http://www.cnbc.com/id/101869455

Personal data including text messages, contact lists and photos can be extracted from iPhones through previously unpublicized techniques by Apple Inc employees, the company acknowledged this week.

The same techniques to circumvent backup encryption could be used by law enforcement or others with access to the "trusted" computers to which the devices have been connected, according to the security expert who prompted Apple's admission.

In a conference presentation this week, researcher Jonathan Zdziarski showed how the services take a surprising amount of data for what Apple now says are diagnostic services meant to help engineers.

Users are not notified that the services are running and cannot disable them, Zdziarski said. There is no way for iPhone users to know what computers have previously been granted trusted status via the backup process or block future connections.

"There's no way to `unpair' except to wipe your phone," he said in a video demonstration he posted Friday showing what he could extract from an unlocked phone through a trusted computer.

As word spread about Zdziarski's initial presentation at the Hackers on Planet Earth conference, some cited it as evidence of Apple collaboration with the National Security Agency.

Apple denied creating any "back doors" for intelligence agencies.

"We have designed iOS so that its diagnostic functions do not compromise user privacy and security, but still provides needed information to enterprise IT departments, developers and Apple for troubleshooting technical issues," Apple said. "A user must have unlocked their device and agreed to trust another computer before that computer is able to access this limited diagnostic data."

But Apple also posted its first descriptions of the tools on its own website, and Zdziarski and others who spoke with the company said they expected it to make at least some changes to the programs in the future.

Zdziarski said he did not believe that the services were aimed at spies. But he said that they extracted much more information than was needed, with too little disclosure.

Security industry analyst Rich Mogull said Zdziarski's work was overhyped but technically accurate.

"They are collecting more than they should be, and the only way to get it is to compromise security," said Mogull, chief executive officer of Securosis.

Mogull also agreed with Zdziarski that since the tools exist, law enforcement will use them in cases where the desktop computers of targeted individuals can be confiscated, hacked or reached via their employers.

"They'll take advantage of every legal tool that they have and maybe more," Mogull said of government investigators.

Asked if Apple had used the tools to fulfill law enforcement requests, Apple did not immediately respond.

For all the attention to the previously unknown tools and other occasional bugs, Apple's phones are widely considered more secure than those using Google Inc's rival Android operating system, in part because Google does not have the power to send software fixes directly to those devices.

Yeah that's the consensus. But my friend who has an S3 has faster Sprint LTE vs my ATT LTE on my Note 2 (as per Speedtest app). That's at least in Miami Beach anyways. Not sure how the coverage is in the rest of the tri county area.

Got an email from the mobile phone group at my employer. It said time to ditch the BB and enjoy this iPhone 5C. I guess.
I would have rather gotten an email that said that they were turning off the BB and to suck a nut

Google's photo sphere camera just came out for iOS. Been waiting for that. Haven't been really all that impressed with micro$oft's photosynth. I hope it's better.

First images of the new iPhone are out

http://www.macrumors.com/2014/08/19/...ell-assembled/

Looks like the OG iPhone a little bit or just a smaller version of the iPad mini. I notice side mounted power button too

I read this earlier today...the OG phone is still the most comfortable to hold phone they've made...and if this new one can replicate that...its a winner.

Anyone know wtf happened with my phone?

So today I plugged my phone into my comp to sync more songs etc and for the first time ever, out of the blue, I get the following error message: 'iTunes could not connect to this iPhone because an unknown error occurred (0xE8000065)'.

I unplugged the phone several times, used a different usb port in the front and back, restarted itunes and the computer, etc. I did some research online and read people doing all sorts of shit to fix it... stuff that was rocket science to me like going into bios and doing something with C... whatever. Then I saw someone with a simple solution which worked for me. I turned the phone off and closed itunes. Then, while still connected to the usb port, I opened itunes again and it turned the phone on and showed in itunes and connected just fine. I disconnected it and reconnected it and it is working again as normal.. for now.

1) Any idea what caused this? If it happened today, I wouldn't be surprised if it happens sometime again.

2) Very weird, the first time after I got the error message.. my cell phone would not be able to use wifi/data. For instance, I tried to go to a website on safari, I tried to load a game that uses data, I tried to get emails.. nothing worked. Even with wifi connected and working. WTF? Only after I did the fix above and got it connected again did data/wifi work as normal.

Thankfully it is working now but anyone heard of this? It is really weird that it seemed to 'disable' everything that uses data/wifi.

I fixed iTunes by getting rid of my iPhone. Worst program. They should allow simple file transfer.

Is there an iTunes browser store like Google Play? I get an email from iTunes (I still use my old 4 as a BT music player in the house) to check out store specials or whatever but I have to install the software onto my work PC. Google Store allows me to shop via browser and have it automatically d/l to my phone if desired. I guess they don't need my money.

Also I can't remember the last time I used iTunes with my iPhone. If I need to transfer files to it, I do it by Dropbox or with the wifi server mode in VLC

Btw latest rumors say that the next iPhone will finally get NFC. Images of the new logic board show a spot where the NXP PN65 NFC chip could fit.

Even thou they are late to the game, this should be good for increasing popularity of NFC in the USA.

finally !!!

I use NFC a lot...

and a bigger screen !!!

on the flip side, I like Itunes/sync/backup on the iphones...Samsung KIES is a POS !!!

but I love the browser play store....I can browse and install an app on any of my devices

Miz, I have been using the note 3 for almost a year now...love it !!! and the specs on that thing....its a total monster !!!

the wifey has been wanting my note 3 so I surprised her for her birthday with an LG G3...look into that as well, 5.5" QuadHD, gestures, the OS, its just ...so if you dont use the stylus a lot (or dont think you will use the stylus), the G3 might be the one
