Acura TLX Type S Reviews/Discussion
Might make it easier for people to find specific information/feedback if we start a thread specific for the Type S once we have actual/real information.

Anyways. There are other reasons to buy it, such as if you just like the TLX and want the slightly more fun version and don't care about overall performance but for many this thing has been a huge let down.

I'm on Kris Krifel's livestream now. He is saying he got 5.05 0-60, and Sofyan from Redline Reviews got a 4.7. Not bad! About the same as my RLX Sport Hybrid, but much better sounding and probably not boat-handling.

Saw this in Autoblog
Chassis updates include extra bracing for a 13% stiffer body, 40% stiffer front springs, thicker stabilizer bars, more aggressive shock valving, retuned steering, and larger four-piston Brembo brakes. Standard 20-inch wheels and tires are the largest yet for TLX, and Pirelli P Zero summer tires are available with an NSX-inspired design. Tying it all together are drive modes with a new Sport+ setup: Turn and hold the centrally positioned mode selector for 1 second, and throttle response, shifting, exhaust valve, steering effort, damping, torque vectoring, and even interior lighting take on a more aggressive calibration.

All this talk about performance and extra bracing and racing heritage, and yet it's still not faster or equal to an older competitor. So it's cheaper yes, but not more practical or faster or more luxurious than an S4. You're just paying less for less (don't count exterior dimensions since it serves nothing), now we need to see what dealers do with MSRP. It's in no way worth more just because Acura is slow in making them.

I actually think the MSRP pricing itself is reasonable; less for less is fair. The $800 upcharge for the y-spoke wheels is a steal; they look way better than the base wheels and I hvae no doubt the Germans would have charged $2500 extra for that upgrade. However, this is going to wind up being the same BS that happened with the CTR when it first came out. $35K MSRP made it a good deal but $45K market price made it a fanboy only proposition.

I called three local dealers here around SF. One of them was mum about ADM, but two of them said they're planning on a $10-15K ADM for the first year or two. When I pressed one of them on what makes it worth more than an S4 or M340i, they said that this is a very special and exclusive car whereas those are a dime a dozen:eyeroll:.

So happy i got me and M series and didn't hold out for this. I think weight is a big factor as well, also they should have added launch control at least

I am probably one of the cheerleader for Type-S. I cannot help feeling somewhat disappointed by Type-S because I think at the end of the day, the best effort from Acura is more or less on par with an aging S4. Five year of R&D and Type-S cannot show quickly in measurable way that it breaks new ground among the competition. Maybe my expectation is too high, but the uphill climb in Laguna Seca lbefore the cork looks painfully slow. It really is competing on price alone ( nothing wrong with that).
On the other hand, Type-S does at least bring Acura back to the mid-tier sports sedan/SUV discussion. So I guess that is mission accomplished. Now, while TLX-S may seems a bit underwhelming, the good bits would fit nicely in a RDX where a lot of things can be forgiven. Bring on the next Type-S!

@12:45 AoA in his video explains his opinion of the Type-S very well.
I do agree with him on the HUD.

As much as I like fully loaded cars (not that the Type S is one, though it’s close), I think Acura missed by not having a base trim. There’s a $7K difference between a base SHAWD and A-Spec SHAWD. Imagine if Acura offered a base Type S for $45K. The amount of hype would be unreal as it would significantly undercut all the Germans apples-to-apples.

I think the TLX just barely outclasses the S4. The shifts in all the videos I've seen have been dual-clutch quick. I think the interior looks much better than the S4 too. I did see the TLX beat the S4 from a dig in one of the videos but I'm sure Acura benchmarked that. Not sure if the S4 has more interior room. The TLX doesn't have much but the S4 is also a smaller car.
Also, the S4 has the ZF8, known to be the best since it's used in MANY high performance cars.

I AM NOTTTTTTTTTTTTT Surprised. Once again, loyal Acura follower or not, this is how Acura is. The writing was on the wall a long time ago. I don't care what anyone thinks, but the engine design is ass backwards. It's still over priced and under performs as the non delusional enthusiasts called it for many months now. Put it in sport Plus so it idles at 1K, for what reason? more noise? Design a new engine using a timing belt still. It's time to move on Acura and while they are making the right steps they totally fucked up on this. The MDX-S will have worse performance and cost an absurd amount of money. Anyone can bash Germans all day long but at least they know how to execute a performance sedan with the right options for the money. All this hype coming from a hand full of members here with stock cars.

That gigantic brace in the TLX's trunk pretty much negates the car being bigger. How is the TLX's interior better? If anything, the most it can be is similar. Tech wise, it's not even close. S4 has a new gen touch screen and digital dash.
Also, the S4 has the ZF8, known to be the best since it's used in MANY high performance cars.

As far as the ZF8 is concerned. It is good. But it's also over 10 years old now. The way this 10-speed is working in the Type S application looks on par.

I'm talking passenger room and trunk space. I'm not gonna get worked up about a brace. The S4's interior is showing its age. The touchscreen looks tacked on and intrusive. The steering wheel is bland and uncontoured. It's got that German aesthetic dash which I find ok but some people think looks professional. The sound system is uninspiring for the price.

Type-S' red analogue gauges are very futuristic and doesn't show its age at all ....it's the same as my 07 Type-S
Oh, and about that brand new 10sp auto ... Type-S also has worse mileage than S4.

My honest opinion as someone who was an ASE certified master technician, worked for Acura, BMW and Mercedes, As an car enthusiasts, the biggest issue I see down the road is the engine having issues. The design is rarely used and has been used before. It's complex and can lead to a number of issues down the road. Acura MAY HAVE tested this vehicle up to 100K in two years, but that is still SHORT TERM. Over the 8-10 years and heat being a big issue, things will deteriorate. That's long term / real word testing. I've talked to multiple Acura technicians and they are already dreading working on this. I can't see many aftermarket companies that are going to supply aftermarket support for this vehicle. It's a new engine never used before. I've said it many times before, I wouldn't be the 1st to jump on a tune because the details of this engine and what it can handle is still unknown. The ECU and management is still unknown. It's NOT a proven engine or setup, unlike the 2.0T. That aside, for 55K+ what are you REALLY getting at this point? That's been the whole debate. I personally think this TLX-S won't have the same demand as the 3rd gen TL-S. Look how different the auto industry has CHANGED from the last TL-S. Sedans are on the verge of death and sooner or later, EV vehicles will consume the market. They slept for 10 years and came back too late in my opinion. The best of Acura is long gone. These new Acuras are artificial and make you feel disconnected. Acura brings a bunch of Pro honda / Acura auto journalist to test the TLX-S, who didn't see that coming? All the reviews are going to be bias anyway. You hope this will be better than the Q50/Q60 but the common response you see from others that have no idea how performance actually works is the TLX-S has bs hp/tq numbers while the Q50/Q60 has a lot more, but forget about all the other factors. Unfortunately we live in a world where HP sells and faster 0-60 times has become the most obsession.
