so my house was built in the late 50's and everyone in the development has the same style bathroom with a window in the shower... as i am starting to plan my bathroom renovation from that god awful retro look of the black and pink tiles with hopes that it doesn't come back in style next year... i have mixed ideas on what to do with the window in the shower...

the window was just replaced 2 yrs ago with a vinyl doublehung and there wasn't any rot/moisure damage to the frame... i keep a waterproof curtain there to block any splashing, and air out the shower to keep mold issues minimal...

Not a fan of windows inside the shower. My suggestion is something like this...

 

ill get an update pic tonight... i knew someone would ask... but to give you an idea, the bottom of the window is lower than 'boobie' height but higher than the waist and the top of the window is about 6' from the ground...

i was thinking about doing those privacy glass blocks... but seems like a waste of a perfectly good/new window... i'll price out some options but call me cheap...

 

so it starts at the corner of the shower and comes in maybe 2ft to where you can see the edge of the shower door cuts off the window in the pic... starts waist high and goes up...

thoughts? glass block the whole thing?

 

I guess the biggest issue would be the aesthetics from the outside. I think it would look cool in the shower. It that the side of your house?

 

you mean looking out the window??? the two windows is my neighbor...

you can see the edge of my house in the bottom right of the window... with the light on it..

 

I guess as long as the window is leak free and won't mold or rot, just leave it.

 

Or just frost it so people can't see in but you still get some light.

Taking out the window would require you to repair or refinish the exterior of the house as well... I guess some of that depends on your budget.

there is a sill that sticks out and the trim around the window is wood painted with some sealer... but i will prob cut the sill and remove the trim and then tile all the way up to the window so it is a bit cleaner... frost the glass for some privacy and get a clearer curtain for added privacy...

i'll go all out when i buy the dream house...

Don't even need to replace the glass ($$). Just go to Home Depot -- they sell film and also a frosted spray. So you can buy sheets of adhesive frost or other patterns that give privacy, or you can buy it in the spray. I would probably avoid the spray because I can't see how that would guarantee coming out even and uniform. Just cut the sheet to size and stick it on. Take out all the bubbles and it looks like a frosted window.

 

^^ Those sheets work great, however I'd be concerned to use them in such a damp location. They may end up peeling away after a while.

 

Cant see the pic (blocked at work) but a couple of questions:
Is that the only window in the bathroom?
Is there a bathroom vent fan?

Reason for asking is that if you were leaning towards removing/sealing that window, you would require some other sort of venting.

As for custom glass, any glass shop would stock and cut to size for you (yellow pages) but i have asked for pricing and foud out it costs from 2-4x as much as regular clear glass. If you ever go into ny/flushing, i could pass along info of some glass shops.

 

Drew, you do not want to replace the glass in that window with frosted. Way too much effort to get the look you want.

I think you will be ok with the frosted film on the window. They stick pretty well. Just clean the area really well.

 

right now there is no vent in the fan... but for the reno i plan on installing an exhaust fan with heat lamps... but tbh i would still like to keep the window for extra air movement...

yeah ill go have a look at HD and Lowes this weekend to see if they sell the film... i have tinted before so it should be the easiest part of the reno...

time to start picking out sink and vanitys!!! i already got the tub and toilet picked...

I got the Drake - I've read that it's highly rated among plumbers for self-cleaning and non-clogging. I havent had a back up and its very, very quiet. We were originally going to get one of the Kohlers cause of the powerful-sounding flushing noise, but then you realize that that can get kinda old late at night when you flush and wake everyone and the dog

 

went to HD this past weekend and picked up a roll of the frosted glass adhesive... 6 bucks!!! can't go wrong... i haven't put it in the bathroom yet since i'll wait for the reno but did test it on my front door...

i have glass in the center of my front door which i didn't like that ppl from the outside could see inside the house... so i put up the frost paper and i worked like a champ...
