So my buddy and I removed the massive amounts of shipping materials, took the doors off, and moved this sucker up the front steps and into the kitchen. The cabinet is all hardwood and hand crafted, the weight on the box said 188 lbs, and it's definitely heavy and solid.

I was extremely happy not just with how well it matched the paint colors, but also how perfectly it fit in the space that I had planned for it. My buddy was amazed that I didn't measure ahead of time, I just eyeballed and knew the space that I had to work with, but it fits absolutely perfectly. Here's a couple pics that I snapped after we got the doors back on.

I will take some better pics some time this week. I can't believe how deep the shelves are.

It's in the back of my 4Runner, it's not going up until the floor gets redone in the spring, March time frame.

Another reason I wanted a self standing cabinet, that way I can just slide it into the dining room to get the flooring done

It keeps changing, most likely some kind of stone tile, or possibly hardwood laminate, I really want to do tile, but I have to find some that has grip for me and the dogs. I don't want it to be slippery in barefeet, etc. Gonna see what the flooring place suggests when the time comes.

Forearm Forklift 9.4 ft.L x 3 in. W Moving Straps-FF000012 at The Home Depot

Buy that and thank me later. They work wonders for moving large heavy things easily with two people. 188lbs is nothing, we moved a 300lb refrigerator with no issues using the straps. And it's not expensive for $20.

Looks good. If you are worried about grip, I would steer away from laminate based on our dogs hating it. As for tile, they seem to do much better on it because the grout/seams slow them down and if you keep in dirt free, they should do well.

Great thread...
Loving the outcome. I agree, lean those cabinet doors and go with a nice clean stainless modern pull. It'll change the entire look. My wife wanted to change our cabinets but once we swapped handles, she loves them.

You should look into the wood look tile...that's what my wife wants. So durable with the look of wood.

and ...your poor ex, getting ripped on her non professional paint job!

Sorry I never posted more complete photos, I still haven't had time to completely get the kitchen back together and make it pretty.

I did change the lighting in my man cave over the weekend. I replaced the wobbly fire hazard pull chain/glass lights that were this style

I didn't take a before, but here's the wobbly ballasts

I replaced them with lower profile single bulb pull chains that don't get in the way of my projector or threaten to fall on someone's head every time you pull the chain. I'm happy with them, and they were only like $10 a pop at Lowes.

Hey man I actually thought about this thread over the weekend. We've been buying a lot of MCM furniture lately, specifically the Broyhill Emphasis line, and some pieces have needed some TLC to make them look great again.

Anyway, I bought two products on Amazon. Howard Restor-A-Finish and Howard Feed-N-Wax. The restore product basically dissolves the original finish and then evenly reapplies it. You rub it into the wood with the grain with a 0000 pad of steel wool. Then wipe clean. Immediately follow it up with two or three layers of the Feed-N-Wax.

That combo would be perfect for your cabinets. It would probably make them look brand new and it's super easy to do. It would take you a couple hours max. Check them out. They are like $10 each.

Robot Check Robot Check

Amazon.com: Howard FW0016 Feed-N-Wax Wood Polish and Conditioner, 16-Ounce: Home Improvement Amazon.com: Howard FW0016 Feed-N-Wax Wood Polish and Conditioner, 16-Ounce: Home Improvement

Highly recommended.

Did a few more lighting upgrades around the house, replaced this old piece of junk with a nickel 10 bulb chandelier.

Thanks guys, it's been fun upgrading and changing things up. We also fen shui'd my dining room and spare bedroom, and got rid of a bunch of old furniture and stuff. Didn't really feel the need to take pics though

Did you get rid of the bed in the spare bedroom? Spare rooms are always sort of a waste-of-space for me since well, how often does someone really crash in there? So, you have a bed taking up all that space when it can be for something else.

So, I'm thinking a cot down the road or even a foldout couch? Dunno...going to need to figure that out.

What did you do with your spare room?

I have not gotten rid of the bed yet, because my buddy was having lady problems and has been using it. We moved all the junk and stuff that was being stored in there, and rearranged all the furniture to make better use of the space and make it an actual room. We also cleaned out the closet and he took a bunch of old clothes that don't fit, and filled another bag of clothes that I donated to goodwill. I have a fold out queen mattress in my couch in the man cave (basement) that no one ever uses, but I'm trying to decide if I should ditch the bed completely or replace it with a new mattress/box spring. I really would like to clear out more room and put an elliptical in the spare room, but haven't decided yet. We also hooked up the 20" LCD and DVD player that I had sitting in there. The spare room came out really nice, I'll snap a pic.

So a friend of mine built a brand new house, and took that chandelier down within 2 days of moving in. He was going to throw it away, but gave it to me instead when I asked about it. I just looked on Home Depot's site, and they want $321 for that light with no bulbs

I'm no home reno expert (far from it) but I think chandeliers are not cheap to start with. Some can go into the thousands...so, yours is actually a "bargain".

Just realized your avatar is from spaceballs.

About the chandelier, I was thinking that you were on a tight budget and that was pretty baller...that explains it.

I had a customer (used to be a field tech for my company) that was going to throw away this tiffany stained glass lamp...she's like, if you can get it down, you can have it. ...had it in my old place, our last rental place and now our current home.

found out that shit was worth over $600 new!

Free.99 is as good as it gets

I knew when I saw it that it was a $2-300 model

Chandeliers are impact pieces in highly visible areas. Where it's ok to leave the realm of home decor and breach the line of "art". Also known as expensive.

We've been eyeing a few specific vintage ones and they have all been $800+ off Craigslist.

And put up some pictures or something. Damn J.
