Kudos to all you runners out there, whether you are running 10 a week, or 80 a week.

Cheers!
kick ass. I don't know where you would find the time to even train for something like that. Hopefully knee surgery won't keep you out long.

I guess it's just a progression in running. I know when i ran 14 the other day i said to the mrs. that a long run for a marathon is only 6-7 miles longer.

We'll concentrate on a half for now.

Keep coming back and welcome.

nice thing about running races....they start at 8am. so getting up at 6am is not a big deal.

tri's....crap...i'm up at 4am, eat, prep, get butt over to race site, body marking at 5:15am, set up gear, go pee, check gear again, go pee, sunscreen, check gear again (yeah i'm paranoid), go pee, get wetsuit on and wait until my wave starts or the race itself starts at 7am ish...oh and pee.

sleep is vital for proper recovery. get to bed a little bit earlier if you can, eat well, top off fluids (if its going to be hot, add extra salt to your food), and have at it on race day.

Hey dallison, it is just a process of increasing your miles gradually and not getting injured in the process. The important thing is that you are out there doing it, and challenging yourself... keep it up!

MRI is on Friday. Wasatch 100 2013 (I hope).

I have noticed as i am incorporating biking into the mix(8-15 miles) and increasing monthly mileage that it does sem to get easier. I seem to be tired a lot of the time depending on the day of the week.

Having knee surgery myself, i have learned a little about trying to stay injury free.
Good luck with the mri and don't take no for an answer.

There is a lot to be said for running well below your race pace. If you are going out and crushing it every run, it is harder to recover. I only do about 1 or 2 hard runs a week. I have a 10 mile course in the mountains that I try to set a PR on once a week (unless I'm just not feeling it) and then every other week I try to run a fast marathon. On the weeks in between I do my long runs (slow). I always do a recovery run the day after a long run, short and slow, and I always feel better after the run.

I used to run hard every time I went out, and I was a lot younger, and a lot slower. Older and wiser now (I hope).

my friend who did the triple iron...he runs back to back marathons in the same weekend for training (stage races, ultras etc).

i think last yr he ran 7mi from his house to the local marathon start. ran the marathon, then ran 7mi back home. so...40 mile run just for giggles, b/c his triple iron tri made the 40 miles of running only look wussy.

mind you he ran this marathon 3 wks after his triple iron tri. then ran another marathon 2 wks later, and another one about 3 weeks later....he's also done the death race in VT (foot race involving a large log or two dragging or carrying it and mud, a big mtn to climb and a bunch of other things that you can't prep for) for 48 hrs.

That just plain nuts.....

One of the VPs at my office used to run 10 miles every single day. Now he is having hip and knee problems.

same friend didnt' know he messed up a disc in his back, then the disc blew just trying to pick up his kid. ends up having back surgery...8 wks later he's in the north pole doing some foot race up there pulling a 90 pound sled in hip high snow! this was all against doc's orders. stubborn fool. never listens to his body. tough as nails, but igonorant of his body.

add in the fact that his eating habits...think hot dogs, beer and bologna sandwiches...throw in a wendy's baconator are less than desired for optimum performance.

It's a catch-22. He can eat all of that nonsense because of his exercise regimen. All the exercise and physical activity allows his body to "chew" through it after he does.

sadly he doesn't aim for optimum performance...he just these events for the ex[erience which is great and all but...i'm competitive and want to do my best that my potential will allow...not just finish.

he is. he's the one person you can ask if he wants to run a marathon or a 20 miler tomorrow...he'd do it if there was nothing else he had to do. he lifts wts like a beast too...so he isn't this skinny ass rail thin distance runner looking type. he's got a normal lower body build for a runner...his upper body....burly with big arms. add in the fact he's a little short (maybe 5'9").

Yes... great training. Run 26, go home, don't eat much, but hydrate, then go run 26 again the next day. This simulates long runs, and teaches your body to deal with the rigors of those runs w/o actually having to run 50 in one day. I usually do one or two of these in my training as well.

but do you eat fried pepperoni's and drink beer the night before the first one, and then eat a wendy's baconator after the first one and before the second one? i think he said he had a bad case of gas during the 1st one and felt a little sluggish on the 2nd one. hmmm....wonder why?

That's an ultra marathoner... what ever gets you though it. I prefer root beer to beer, and I will typically eat what ever is in front of me. The hard part is to not eat much between the 2 runs.

I did a 5k last night around my neighborhood with my weighted vest (20#) on. The flats were easy but the hills (up & down) were a ball buster. I think I am definitely going to incorporate some of this into my next marathon training plan. Doing shorter sets of hill repeats with the vest on.

i think of it as why put shitty fuel in your body (the machine) to get mediocre results? you'd do better with premium fuel going in for optimum performance. yeah i understand the burger and fries cravings along with other various "comfort" hi fat bad for you foods, but i guess i think of my body differently and how i fuel it.

Watch out for those knees.... Hills should give you enough of a workout without the weights. The force of impact on the down hill is what you need to watch out for.

That's great that you eat well! I eat so-so, but that is a huge improvement on how I used to eat. I have played around with different diets (not weight loss), but have found very little correlation in how I feel vs what I eat, so I just eat what I want. My running results seem to match my training (if I under train, I'm slow; if I over train, I'm slow). I definitely eat what I crave (after a 6 hour training run, I eat carbs... lots of carbs; anything from fruit to cookies. I seem to crave pasta, and red meat during (short runs), and I always seem to need ice cream!

^^^i always joke around with pizza....only time i eat pizza is in the athlete's food tent after races. otherwise...i feed the body clean food...no processed junk. at least i know what's in clean food vs the processed stuff.

sure i could eat anything i wanted, but...i know way too much about physiology and how crappy food can influence it. gotta optimize the only machine i have!

Tomorrow's the day. I feel good as of right now and i think i tapered pretty much like trigirl said. Normal dinner tonight and i have been trying to stay more hydrated than normal.

I am hoping for under 1:40 but might be able to get a 1:31-35 if i'm having a normal day.

I went to bed 30 min earlier last night and i'll do the same tonight to get that last little bit of rest i can get. I know i'll be up a couple times with excitement but i'll deal with that as it comes.

Good luck to you both!!
