From what I've read and experienced they are more of a transitional type shoe than minimalist. A true minimalist shoe would have a zero heel-toe drop. Something like Innov8's or Alta's. The Brooks are minimalist in the sense that they are less structured and let your foot move more naturally when running then a traditional running shoe and have that shorter drop. But they are by no means a barefoot running shoe.

I doubt I will ever get a true minimalist running shoe, but wanted something a little less structured than the "normal" running shoe and these things are great. Here's a review of them from Peter Larson, a very well respected running form resource and Professor of Human Anatomy and Physiology.

<--- Running a 5k tomorrow.....it looks like it will be done in the rain.

Anyone run a race during a significant rain?

It has rained the past three Pittsburgh Marathons. The first two times I was running the half, last year it was the full. Last year wasn't that bad, a few sprinkles with a quick shower here and there. Two years ago there were downpours for extended periods of time. It sucked, but at the same time was kinda fun!

Well, it rained during the entire run.

It was pretty much un-eventful.....other than getting wet.

I ran with a hat and light running jacket to help resist some of the rain.

My run times we essentially unchanged. It was a new/different experience, but I prefer dry conditions......puddles that soak your feet FTL.

btw....the 5k was hosted by the Los Angeles Kings.

The route started from Staples Center and went through parts of downtown L.A.
It was an interesting street course among the buildings.

Signed up for the Cowtown half-marathon which is in a month (my first official event!). For the past 1-2 months I've been increasing my mileage on some of my runs from 7 to 9 miles (9 being the most I've ever done and it was a great feeling of accomplishment). Did another 8.5 last night. If I keep the same pace I've been going at with these 7-9 mile runs I HOPE to finish around 1:50:00.

I saw that some of you suggested special running socks in sly's other thread he just created so I'm going to check those out this weekend, as well as the best top I should wear since it will be chilly in the morning but I don't want to get too warm and feel like I have to take a layer off.

I'm excited!

3 miles in 22:46, that's 7:35 a mile. Probably the fastest I have ever run.

Nice! Keep it up! Just slowly increase your mileage every week or two (I'm sure you've already heard this) and you will have no problem with the half marathon.

In preparation for my half marathon I have coming up in 2 1/2 weeks I actually ran 13.1 miles last weekend and did it in 1hr 43min . I'm ecstatic at that time. The worst thing was the water fountains on the trail I ran were not working so by the end of my run my mouth was so foamy and needed water badly! Plus I took a gu gel thing midway through and it made me even thirstier so that sucked. I was sore for a couple days but was able to do a 7 mile run last night so I think I'm ready for this bad boy.

I... am not the biggest fan of running. But suitemate dragged me out of the dorm, did 4 miles in around 34 minutes. Kinda sucky for a sophomore in college haha.

You guys keep it up though!

Anybody ever suffer from a case of Peroneal tendonitis? Marathon training sidelined this week due to a suspected case of it, Dr. appt on Monday. Ran 16.5 in the snow two weeks ago. Wife thinks the combination of the uneven snowy surface and wearing my trail shoes aggravated the peroneal muscles and tendons. Ran on it with just some dull pain last week, went to do my long run on Sunday, made it thru 10 miles, then pain to much. Felt like a knife was jabbing me on the outside of my foot right below ankle. Very frustrating.

Never had that problem but sometimes I notice after about mile 7 or 8 of a long run SOMETIMES the sole of my left foot, mainly from the middle to the toes, starts hurting. I take my shoe off for 30 seconds then can run another couple miles until it happens again.

I could barely feel the same thing when I was stretching one time and it happened when my feet were stretching out. So I'm thinking it must be something to do with overstretching the soles of my feet (if that makes sense). I didn't get it on my last run of 10 miles though. Wierd.

I never had those issues. I know when i get to about 2-250 miles on a pair of shoes my toes or feet start to hurt in different places, but feel better after i put on new shoes.

Your marathon is this weekend? Are you still planning on running it since you have paid the registration?

I think that was one of the main problems. I've had this pain before, but never this bad after I've worn my trail running shoes and have had them tied to tight. Think that along with the fact I never ran more than 5-6 miles in them before caused this to flare up. My own dumba** fault for wearing the shoes.

Marathon isn't until May 6th, so I still have plenty of time even if I need to take another week off and just cross train. But my training was going pretty great (for me at least) and to have this happen and have it caused from my own stupidity just kills me.

My half-marathon is this weekend. I'm definitely ready.

Forecast looks great other than possible 10-20 mph winds

lol, i know what you mean. I have about 220 miles on a pair of gel nimbus 12's and i know you can get 4-500 miles out of a pair. I can't stand that i get such low mileage out of them and try to eek out a few more miles and end up with aching feet or worse.

I don't know if this is the limit for my feet with shoes or the limit for asics on my feet.

My first race in the books!

I got there about an hour early and found a good parking spot, 10 min later I would have had to park much farther away. Leaving was also a breeze and no traffic, but I only stayed for about an hour afterwards.

As far as the race, it went great. I just put on a realy old, big sweater I never used to keep warm for the first 2 miles then ditched it. The wind wasn't bad at all; it was almost perfect conditions.

The whole race I think I did great keeping my pace, although it seemed like sometimes it was faster than usual. Just like some people around me, I picked up the pace a little starting around the last mile and even more around the last 300 meters or so. The finish line crowd probably helped. I had a great kick and must have passed 25 people or so in the last quarter mile - it felt awesome passing those people . I finished with a chip time of 1:46:57, but according to mapping the course online and my app's gps the course was actually 13.4 miles so I did finish around where I thought I would.

Tons of people and lots of girls with amazing bodies/asses. Overall it was a great experience, and now the first of many to come. Maybe in a year or so I might be able to do a full marathon but definitely not now. There is another half marathon in a month that I might do too. and thanks for the good lucks!

Thanks

There were a few hills but they weren't bad at all. The worst one was literally about a quarter of a mile long, not a 'steep' hill but definitely slowed people down. I noticed that the hilly portions is where I made a lot of my passes on people because I guess my stride didn't tire me out on them like it did to other people

Last week i ran 37 miles and now i am taking this week off. I am trying to put in 70+ miles per month and i hope to have one 100+ month this year which isn't really that hard to do.

I would say i am 100% now after having surgery over two years ago.

My uncle called me about a 10 miler in kutztown on march 31st, but i don't know how i will do. I have never raced that distance but who knows.

Ran 9 miles in 79:45. My knees were killing that last mile but it felt good overall. Need to get new shoes and some braces or compression bands for my race. Half marathon in a lil over a month!

That's not a bad time at all. My 10 miles were around that time plus maybe 10 more minutes.

I never take a watch with me so i never really know how fast or slow i am.

Running these longer distances is really hard. I don't know how people do it.

Training! I trained a lot for my half. I would like to try a 5k but I don't know how people can keep such a fast pace for that long, even though it is only about 3 miles. Guess I'd kind of have to adjust my training for that since it is different than preparing for long runs.

BTW, funny you mentioned never running with a watch. I never wear a watch and just record my time on my ipod but I've recently been looking for a GPS running watch and saw a Groupon a few days ago for a GPS running watch - Soleus GPS 2.0. I've read reviews for the previous 1.0 version and all the reviews said the watch was great and an excellent deal, only thing they wished it had was the ability to upload data to your computer, which this new version has. I don't need all the bells and whistles and don't want to pay 2x or even 3x the amount for a Garmin if this has the same capabilities and has great reviews. ONLY thing this doesn't have that some Garmins might have is a heart rate monitor but I don't need that.

That being said, I just bough one today. Here is the deal if you are interested:
http://www.groupon.com/deals/gg-sole...&c=deal_button

(I hope I am allowed to post that link here).

Today was the first day i didn't really look forward to running.

Yesterday i only ran 5 miles after taking a week off. I ran my steep ass hill pretty quick and came back to run with our youngest. It felt good but i was a little worn.

This morning it was 34 degrees and clear, so it was decent running weather. I must have been a bit worn from yesterday but i laced up and went out.

I ran the first 4-5 miles at a pretty good clip thinking i could keep up the pace for the entire 7-9 miles.
Right around mile 5 i must have hit a wall. For the next 3 miles my ass was dragging. At some point my brain almost told my body to walk, just because.

Somehow i managed to hold an 8 min mile, bt i have no clue how.

I hope i don't have too many days like this or i'll be taking a vacation from running.

I must agree that running long distances becomes a mental thing.

When I was running 8-13 miles preparing for my half marathon I kept thinking 'half marathon soon, push yourself as hard as you can, soon your results will show and you will be rewarded and be like FUCK YA! I JUST DID A HALF MARATHON!' (something like that).

I took a 4 day break after the half marathon cus my body ached but was able to run 8 more miles today and I felt good the whole time.

For me, having a GOAL really fucking pushes me on my runs. Now, I want to run a full marathon (just 1 is enough so I can cross it off my bucket list). If I go for a run just because, it seems like I have less energy because I have nothing to strive for... no goal to reach. If I know I have a race in the future then it seems like I have a little more energy.

Only problem is that although I really want to do a full marathon soon, it is becoming summer and 100+ degree weather here. I hope #1 I can find a race around here within the next couple months and #2 it doesn't get hot as fuck. If not, I will have to wait til December of this year.

Dallison - you probably already know this, but one of the big things when running longer distances is nutrition. Making sure you are eating enought during your run and getting enough fluids in is critical. Especially if you did a hard 5 mile workout the day before and then were trying to run a fast 9 miles the day after.

Anything close to an hour, I'm making sure I have at least a gel or some energy chews. For someone with your speed I would say anything in the 30-35 minute range should bring some form of nutrition with you. You may have just bonked.
