Started running again

We've had some days of really high humidity and heat here, and running in that is nearly impossible. When the wind blows it's like someone is holding a hair dryer in your face.
I can't even imagine what 111 would be like. Damn...

Be very careful going downhill. That is how i injured my knee 3 years ago. You can see how long it took me to recover from that. It was a one mile downhill race that i ran in something like 5:02. After 12-13 years of no running + older knees........ bad results.
The one hill i run has an elevation change of 500 feet in 1.3 miles. I would much rather run up the hill than down. The workout is tremenous, but i have to be real careful on my descent. I will take real short and soft steps when coming down.
I also noticed that my achilles was getting overworked and was starting to hurt. I think it was from running up the hills with a mid strike and not on my toes. I rested for a few days and will get back on the road tomorrow.

Elevation Gain: 288 ft
Elevation Loss: 2,464 ft
Min Elevation: 8,484 ft
Max Elevation: 10,693 ft
Was an awesome race, very fast. Running downhill takes control, I'm a little sorer than normal, but overall not too bad.

Agree with dallison 100% - I would rather run uphill all day - down hill is where you get hurt if you are not careful.....

I finished fifth and there was a guy in his 50's and a kid in about 9th grade who finished about 2-3 minutes ahead of me. Those guys were fast.
The weather was awesome there. It was cooler and less humid. I came back to pa to humidity and heat thurs.

Nice job Dallison!
I've had to take a break from training... I've got a pain that runs from my waist straight down the front of my right leg. It doesn't feel like a pulled muscle and I'm pretty sure it's not joint pain either. Maybe a tendon? If it doesn't begin to clear up in a few days I'm going to have to go see the doc.
I'm also praying that this isn't going to derail my whole plan.

No. Not even halfway. More in the groin area. I have a feeling that the doc is simply going to say that "time" is the only thing that will heal whatever this is. I mean, I could go see my gen med doc, who may or may not order an mri, then I'll see a specialist, maybe some phys ther...... for what? It's not like they'll be able to "do" anything, right?
Sorry - I'm a bit disgruntled about it all.

True usually by the time you see the right doctor, it's been 3 months and the problem has gone away. But when it doesn't it's best to get the ball rolling early.

I'm hoping it's going to go away. And in weeks, not months. I've got about three weeks before I run out of time to train sufficiently for this and I'm going to be pissed if I'm not going to be able to do this. But it's going to be what it's going to be, right? I can't control this.

I personally have slacked off in my running when I was in the Air Force due to my intense job, but now that I am back home and stopped smoking I had something similar to what you had and the best way to get rid of it, is to stretch just after you wake up in the morning while the body is warm, and you are going to have to stretch it for at least 10 minutes, after about a week of doing that my pain went away.

Sounds like a shin splint coupled with a slightly over stretch groin, may I asked does it hurt when you lift your leg or when you are just standing.

I will definitely do the stretching that you suggested. Anything to help this heal quicker would be great. Can you tell me what sort of stretching or describe the best way to do that?
It's really starting to affect me as I find myself getting increasingly irritated about not being able to move.

So, I was about to come in here and say that I needed to get back to running, but now I'm thinking I'll keep that to myself.
Y'all blow me outta the water.

Just get out there and start (again). It's easy and feels great! Start slow and work up easy to lessen the chance of injury. (although that's not foolproof, as this fool knows all too well). Listen to what your body is telling you, it knows what it can handle.

OK guys, got a running workout from the Crossfit classes I've been attending for you guys to try out. It is only a mile & half run, but it kicked my ass. For time (as fast as you can) run 800m, then 400m backwards, 800m, & then 400m backwards. Time stops after the last 400m. I was a little apprehensive about the running backwards, but didn't think it would be that big of a deal. Boy was I wrong!!!! Ran it in 12:05.

No, lifting my leg or just standing on it doesn't cause any discomfort. I went to the doc as well just to see if it was something else and he did the full range of motion tests and determined that it was a pulled groin muscle. I had xrays done of the hip as well and haven't heard anything back so I'm assuming that all is good there. No shin splint pain either, I know what that's like as I suffered from that in the Army.

Then do one of these for the same amount of time.
that should help to at least keep some mobility with less discomfort, and if you can also do this one as well
Also I would find maybe a glucosamine supplement 1000 mg will be sufficent take that once a day. And make sure you are well hydrated that will help big time with recovery, water is the building block of the body so 3/4 liter - 1 liter an hour if you can.
But the main thing with the stretching as well make sure you can do it when you have free time as well not just when you wake up.

Don't compare yourself to what others are doing, there's always someone else than can run faster, longer, etc....

I just need to put it in my mind and on my heart to start getting up early again. Strangely enough, I was feeling fantastic when I was up at 4am to run before work. I wish I could remember why I stopped.

I'm going to take a week or two off. My knee has been hurting a little more lately, just like last year. I was able to go farther and longer into the running season before it started to hurt.
I have been icing it a few times a day everyday for the past few months to keep any inflamation down. The sleeve only helps so much to reduce pain. It's not a sharp pain, it's like a dull numb pain that i know will develop into something more.
It was hot as hell last night @ 93 degrees wheni went for 4 miles.
I've got 230 miles on my current shoes and i have a new pair in the closet. It might be time to put them on and see what happens.

I know they say you can get 200-500 miles out of shoes, but i am guessing if the new shoes help, 200 miles might be my max with new ones.
