Awesome work Arctic! You must feel such an amazing sense of accomplishment.

Did you have any supplements during the run? Gells, electrolytes, etc?

Thanks Stogie! Yeah I keep thinking about finishing and it really is a great feeling. I did take supplements during the run (also when I cycle). My fueling strategy was one or two energy chews (Honey Stinger Energy Chews) every half hour, one gel every hour (Hammer Nutrition Gels), and two salt/electrolyte pills each hour (Hammer Enduralytes). I took water and Gatorade at each fluid station. I also had some orange slices that volunteers were handing out along the course. That is why I'm thinking that they cramping just came from a lack of fitness in my legs.

First off - congrats on the finish! I hope I can get that close to 4 hours...

Secondly, I agree, your fuel intake seems right on recommendations - your body is just never really prepared to run that far in total until you've done it a few times.

I have pretty much the same nutrition plan - Hammer Gel every 45 minutes, Endurolytes every 30 minutes, Powerade and water at each station - and I still cramp up between 18 and 22.

Thanks! I'm sure you will crush it. I agree with ya, I just think my body wasn't prepared for the effort it was going to put out as it never experienced running that far before. The great thing is, now that I've done one, I have a much better idea of how to tailor my training for things I need to improve/work on. A week or two off, then I'm starting back up to train for the Columbus Marathon on Oct. 16.

I added 2 miles on to my usual trail run today. Yikes, it was very much uphill...

My legs are telling me about it right now...

That's awesome Stogie! I can't wait for the trails to dry out around here so I can get back on them with running and mountain biking. We've had so much rain lately its going to take a while.

suite job stogie, it's great when you're adding mileage.

Does anyone know of a good supplement or something to help my knees and ankles? They ache even after resting.

Thanks guys!

The extra 2 miles was really rough terrain, so less running and more "trotting" or fast hiking on the uphills. Needless to say, when I hit the new turn-around point, I had to stop for a minute or two to catch my breath and down a gel pack.

I take Glucosomine and Condroiten with MSM supplements and it really helps my knees. Fish oil is good too.

EDIT: To clarify, these supplements are more for joint pain, not so much muscle pain.

Yeah this is joint pain. We have some fish oil supplements we got at target for the dogs. I guess i could take them instead. I'm scared b/c i know they stink when broken open.I have one more glucosamine left before i get a new bottle. I will check them out next time i'm out.

thanks

I did switch to my new kayano 16's that i haven't worn yet and i haven't noticed a difference yet.

Yeah that is one thing I am going to need to figure out for training for this fall marathon. When training for Pittsburgh, I would run right after work for my mid-week runs. Temps were perfect that time of year, now with training thru summer, it is going to blow during July and August. I can't stand humidity

I don't know HOW you do that... I can barely motivate to get to the can in the AM, let alone to inflict pain through exertion on myself.

I like running at night better. I dread running in the morning because I feel tired half the day. Run at night, take a nice shower, relax with the tv/games, lay in bed, and feel great the next morning.

I ran my 1st 5k of the year today. It was 75 degrees and humid as hell.I was disappointed that there wasn't a bag of stuff and t-shirt at registration. Only those who pre-registered got one, andd i was real early too. There were about 280 runners and i placed 30th, but only ran it in 22:09. I was shooting for under 22 minutes, but i'll try again next weekend. The winner ran it in 16 something.

I was 9th in my age group. It's amazing that so many 30-39 year olds were in the top 30.

Now i just need to hit some more hills. I finished may with 57 miles. That is more than any month since i started running 2-3 years ago.

Thanks, i have dropped a couple more lbs since yesterday. We went to artsfest in Harrisburg and it was hot out. Some parts were shaded and some weren't. I drank a lot of fluids all day long. I was drained by the end of the day.

I actually end up doing that alot. Seems like everytime im ready to run its like late morning, right before noon. Like today, I did 13 miles. Was not such a great success though, I ended up walking the last mile, the temps kept climbing and I just couldnt run anymore.

Nice work, but that's rough and dangerous esp. with the temps.

I normally leave the house around 6-7 am on a weekend or after 6-7 on a weekday.

Congrats on the 5K!

How are the joints holding up? I'm thinking of starting the Glucosamine and Condroiten to ward off any impending joint pain as a result of all the running. No discomfort there yet but I did pull a muscle in my calf from stretching too much and it hurts like a bitch. Hoping it will heal quickly.

I've been training in the heat now too and I'm surprised at how much energy it saps. I sweat like a pig so I'm drenched by the time I'm done. I drink plenty of water during the day and during the workout as well so I should be safe, heat stroke is a really dangerous thing.

Morning runs are great but like others here getting my butt out there was the problem. On mornings that I do that I just roll out of bed, put the shoes on and go. If I give myself time to think I'll talk myself out of it so I'm usually still waking up by the time the first steps are hitting the pavement. Five minutes after that and I'm good to go for the duration!

thanks! The joints aren't too bad. I still have to pick up supplements as i haven't had a chance to go to target.

I do use the 110% blitz sleeve with the ice pack and that seems to help with any inflammation that i might be imagining.

You are right about the mental thing. It is easy to talk yourself out of running. All day yesterday i told myself that it was a day of rest and that i'm too tired. But once i got home, i realized that i would just be lounging on the couch. That got me moving.

The next day depending how far/hard i ran, i find myself almost too relaxed if there's such a thing.

As long as i'm not uptight or stressed, i'm fine.

It's great to see someone else jumping in after a number of years. I am running my first race in over 25 years. The Marine Corps Run Amuck, a 3.5 mile obstacle race. Two goals: 1) Finish 2) Don't die.

So in place of a fall marathon, thinking I am going to run a half instead. There are so many other things that I would like to do/rather do during the summer then have to run. I'm thinking spring of 2012 will be marathon #2 time. Planning on the Hersey half marathon in November. Can't beat running with the smell of fresh chocolate in the air to push you along!

Yes, it's difficuly doing it after years of inactivity.

I am now exhausted.

I just need to make sure i pay attention to any pain or discomfort my knee gives me. There are times when it's pretty tight and i know i need to back off or just plain rest.

I have started to take fish oil and i am looking for glucosamine condroitin to start taking. I'll look at sams club for the big container.

<---- New to the runners thread.

Just ran a 5k over the weekend.....first one in many moons, however I have been running on my own quite regularly for the past 9 months.

Finished in just under 26 minutes....not bad I guess....I was pretty happy with it.

Question: A friend of mine that runs (who ran the same race with me) uses those 5 finger "shoes". He switched over to them about a year ago. He swears by them.

He claims his bad knees are no more. He has no more joint pain.
He did say it is a bit of a transition to re-learn your stride as you run on the toes-balls of your feet instead of heal striking in your stride. He said you have to be extremely careful when switching over to the 5 fingers, due to extreme calf pain, ankle, ligament pain due to the use of muscles/tendons that you never really used before (bare-foot running as it were). He screwed up his calves & ankles by over doing it in the beginning.

I do get occasion sore knees from running, and am looking into 5 fingers.
Anybody make the transition? Thoughts? Recommendations? Are they worth it?
Will they minimize joint pain?

moog, awesome job, 26 minutes is a very respectable time. I haven't tried those shoes yet. I need to hear more about them before i try them out. It is possible that they may help you, but only you can be the judge of that.

Wallgreen's almost always has their Wallgreen's branded Glucosamin/Condroitin on sale - Buy One, Get One Free. It's only $20, will last you two months and gives you plenty of time to decide if it works for you or not. That's where I get mine.

Thanks.

I'm a bit tentative to make such a big leap to run in a completely different form/stride. My knees get pain only from time to time, but I'd like to be sure that I won't have issues down the road, because I'm pretty active in many sports/athletics, and I don't want to have a future that limits my activities.

If switching over to bare-foot style helps to eliminate future joint pain, then I am willing to do it.....I just need more info.

Tough call.

One of the first threads on R/W states to really start slow and with very low miles. Since most of us wear shoes most of the time, it will take our feet months to adapt to barefoot or 5 finger shoes.

There is a ton of good info and precautions that are voiced there.

it sounds like it takes a year or so for you to get adapted to them to avoid injuries.
