I'm still trying to figure out Spa before I start modding

I don't know why i suck so baddly at that track. My best time is 2:19.800 but I have a replay of someone doing a 2:10.9xx.

I've watched my replay over and over again but I can't figure out how I'm 9 seconds a lap slower. Realistically I need to find 2 seconds to be competitive.

You're not that far behind me. My PB at Spa is a 2:18.97 in the Saleen. However, I can't really say Spa is one of the places I've put a "serious effort" into. IIRC, the Spa setups I tried (or tried to make) gave me the impression that they were decent in a few corners but REALLY BAD in several other corners. I probably just need to learn where the appropriate places are on the track to compromise.

I aspire to be an "alien" though. That seems to be the accepted term in the sim racing community for the guys that run the insane times like Dan is finding.

I found some decent setups yesterday. You guys may want to check them out. The guy who developed these (Geger Huttu) has been around the sim racing community for many years and knows his stuff. For the most part, they seem to be good combinations of drivability and quickness. I lowered my personal best at Brno by over a second using his Viper setup. Surprised the hell out of me since I never really considered myself to be any good in the Viper.

My setup for Spa is very strange but it seems to work. I'm using the lister with next to zero wing on the front and rear. The weird part is it really hasn't affected my cornering speeds at all.
The only place I had to adjust my technique was on the back straight with that 6th gear left that leads into another straight before the chicane. Before I could go flat out through the whole turn but now I have to lift for a split second to get the front to bite.

I'm getting really low 2:19's now consistantly but I still haven't made it into the 18's. I have a feeling that my setup is good but it's just that I'm taking a slow line through one of the corners somewhere...

From my experience with Spa, I would estimate that the Eau Rouge/Raidillon complex alone can be worth nearly a second. In the setups I'm using I'm almost maxed out in fifth at the bottom of the hill, I tap the brakes and flick down to fourth just before the apex of the first left hand kink and then immediately floor it through the remainder of the complex and down the long straight to Les Combes. If you don't have a sufficient combination of ride height and packers in your setup you'll likely bottom out really badly going up the hill and loose a ton of speed (if not end up in the wall).

And I'm sure you've realized this already, but Spa seems to be one of the few tracks where you can get agressive with the curbs and not upset the car too badly. On the opposite end of the spectrum I'd like to pummel the living hell out of the idiot that came up with the curbs for Enna.

That section was really hard for me to figure out. My current technique is to coast into the first corner in 6th and downshift into 5th full throttle as I make the right and left onto the straight. I'll maybe try braking down to 4th for the first turn and accelerating through the whole thing.

I have a vid of an alien turning a 2:10.8 at spa and he does the whole complex in 6th. His line is pretty well completely useless to me because I can't follow it without spinning.

I'll post a replay of my hot lap tonight so maybe you could give me some pointers if you see a place where I'm obviously slow. One other question, how did you record your replay as an MPEG? Did you use Fraps?

I'd be happy to take a peek at your replay. I delete my replays after each race/practice so unfortunately I can't offer up one of mine. What might be more interesting for comparison is if we both posted our telemetry files. I forgot what they're called but they're in one of the Motec subdirectories. They're pretty obvious once you've found them.

I did indeed use the full version of Fraps to capture my video. I changed the game resolution to 640x480 and then played back the replay within the game in full screen mode. I let Fraps capture to an uncompressed avi and then opened the file in Windows Movie Maker to save it as a wmv.

This new Lambo skin isn't too shabby either.

I'm going to try that tonight!

By the way, i turned a 2:16.329 during a 1 hour race at spa last night.

The Lister is > * at that track and I've made the most bonzai setup for it that seems to work if you need one.

I'm pretty sure that's from a show on the new Fox Game Network. I think it's called "When Collision Detection Goes Wrong" or something like that.

Oh no, wait I know what it is, they forgot to change the

SetGravityHemisphereNorth=1

line in the config file. It is the Aussie V8 cars after all...

Right hand drive is for dorks!

Seriously though, I have a hell of a time using the full width of the track when I'm in the Lister. Probably just a matter of seat time.

BTW - If you go to the GTR\Tracks forum on Race Sim Central, a guy there named GTEvo (I think) has posted some new TV camera files for Spa and Road America. They're not 100% perfect but they're definitely an improvement over the ones that come with the track.

New trailer for GT Legends!

Holy crap this thing looks fun!!! The cars look about as good as GTR, but the track graphics (especially the night racing) seem to be waaaaaaaayyyy improved with the DX9 rendering engine.

Not actually that much faster than the top tier GT cars but definitely quicker.

ok literally after 5 min of driving and spinnng out like 50 times, i noticed a few things, this game is addicting, will occupy a lot of free time, and time that wasn't meant to be free, its hard-core (and i only did semi-pro)

also i noticed playing off a laptop keyboard is a no-no........ you need throttle and brake modulation which on a keyboard you have 0, cause a few spins i might have been able to save them, i did a practise run on donington (since i love the track and know it) in a bmw z3 M and my first lap with like 5 spinns was 2:23 pathetic....... but an awsome game, will have fun this weekend.......
