Welcome to the world of real sim racing Dan!

Some quick GTR tips for you...

Srika and I both found that checking the "reverse effects" box in the force feeback settings was practically mandatory for our red Logitechs. You may want to experiment with this setting if you're not happy with the FFB or just think it doesn't feel right.

This is a matter of opinion, but don't try to get a feel for the game with any of the Porsches. That weight hanging out there in the ass end makes them feel very different than the other cars. I also happen to think the brakes on all the Porsches are very prone to locking relative to other cars in their class. I'd recommend the f360 in NGT and either the Saleen or the Corvette in GT.

For some reason a lot of people (inlcuding myself at the time) try to use Donington as their beginner track. IMO it has a lot of little nuances such as bumps, curb locations, etc... that make it decptively challenging and therefore frustrating to the beginner. I personally think Barcelona is a good track to learn on. It has a nice variety of turns without too many gotcha's.

Lastly, check into the GTR forum at Race Sim Central when you think you're ready. There's lots of links in there to add-on tracks and custom car skins. More importantly, there's also a link to "The Motec Beginner's Guide" which can help you make some sense out of the telemetry system.

I ran about ten laps in the 550 at Donington myself last night. Auto-clutch only. I was able to get down to a 1:33.4 but I was all over the place with the setup I was using. I'm pretty sure I have at least a 1:32.8 in me if I really wanted to put in the effort.

I was thinking "C'mon, he's got to be better than that."

Did you load any setup at all or did you just hit the Grid button and have at it? At a bare minimum you should at least load the F550_Race setup (or whatever it's called) that came with the game. Once you do, don't forget to crank the fuel load down to whatever is appropriate for how long you plan on being out. Since I run short races, I usually base everything around an 11-14 gallon load.

ok... I knew that... I didn't touch any of that. I'll give it another go.

but damn, after playing GTR for a while with all aids off, GT4 feels like a kid's game.

ok........ ran a 1'33 after some seat time. I loaded 550 "race" setup, changed tires to Soft (they were at Medium) - lowered the fuel load to about 7 laps - and bingo. After running a few laps, the tires started to grip better...... imagine that. It made it a little more enjoyable to race, lol...... before that I was kinda pulling my hair out sometimes when I would just spin coming out of a low-speed corner, just because I gave it a little too much gas...... damn... this game is hardcore. I feel a 1'31 or so in there, after I get better at throttle control (primarily) but also brake control.

regarding the 1'44 I did before... I was really babying the car, taking it really easy... maybe because it was on Medium tires, I couldn't go too fast... I would give it even gentle throttle, and it would just lose it - so I had to give it insanely gentle throttle...

I'm having a ball over at Monza with the 550 - this seems like the "beginner" track, not Donington. I'm not wiping out even close to how much I was at Donington .... getting a lot of seat time with this game, it's incredible.

what view do you guys use? I find using the hood-cam gives the best view of the track, but I just love the cockpit view with the wheel - too bad you don't see as much on track... I think there is a way to adjust it though... but I love how you see the whole cockpit "shaking" when you go on bumps and stuff - I think its the "G-effects"...

^^ Sounds like someone's having fun.

So it sounds like my comments on Donington being deceptively difficult weren't too far off. I can't pinpoint it, but there's just a lot of little things that make it tough to really push at that track.

I use the cockpit view myself despite the fact that in the previous generation game (F1 Challenge) I used the roof cam (TV T camera on the F1 cars). I think the Windshield has four or five "phases of filth" that it goes through.

BTW, I find the 550 pretty unforgiving. It just seems to have almost no margin for error. When it goes, it goes. With the Saleen and the C5-R I feel like I usually have at least a chance at catching it.

Also, have you noticed that even within the same car model, there are subtle differences in handling between the cars from the different teams? I usually run the #23 BMS car when I drive the 550. When I tried one of the other 550's I could feel that my setup was not working as well.

I can't get the C5R below 1:32 at Donington but I can regularly get the 550 into the high 1:30's. I still haven't been able to repeat the 1:30.000 I did with the xbox controller but I am 100x more consistent with the wheel. I'm within .5s of my hot lap so I'll probably get there one day.

The funny thing about Barcelona is that the performance of the two cars is completely reversed for me. The C5R laps about a second quicker than the 550. Overall I'd say the C5R is a more stable car and allows you to get on the power sooner. The 550 is a little twitchy and stops a little quicker so it's better on tracks with slow corners at the end of long straights. I can brake about 10 to 15' deeper on the back straight at donington with the 550 than i can with the C5R. I'm sure that's where most of the time difference comes from.

I also have a theory on why the XBOX controller has been fastest so far: the transition time from lock to lock is much faster. You just have to flick your thumb from left to right instead of wrestling with a steering wheel. At Donington there are three corners that switch from left to right without delay so the XBOX controller can make up time in those sections. Throttle control is crap compared to the pedal set so that's why it's so inconsistant.

The wheel set is pretty well unusable in CMR05, it's just too slow to respond. Oddly enough, the keyboard is the best tool for that game.

Dan, for the sake of comparing apples to apples are the times you mentioned still with TC & ABS? All my times are auto-clutch only. I think Srika's last batch may have been the same.

You noticed the same thing I did about the Ferrari. It's overall advantage seems to come from straight line speed and decent brakes. IMO, it's really nothing to write home about in the corners.

Now if you want a rally sim, ditch that CMR05 stuff and get a copy of Richard Burns Rally. Pretty much everyone in the race sim community agrees this one is head & shoulders above all other rally titles. The only problem is that it's technically not distributed in North America. I had to get mine from a place that does imports (interactcd.com).

Yes those times were with TC & ABS. The best I can muster without them is low 33's to high 32's.

I know CMR is more of an arcade game but it's still a fair amount of fun. I'll have to check out Richard Burns though...

I think the Saleen may be the fastest car in a straight line but IMO its advantage there is at the top end. It must just be slippery. Regardless, I've hit 199 MPH with it at Le Mans (1990 version with the chicanes). I'm sure it would easily hit about 203 or so with a well timed draft. Of the tracks I've actually put effort into, I think my PB's were probably set about 2/3's with the Saleen and 1/3 with the 550.

The S7 kicks much ass.

Definitely the most consistant car I've driven. I think it's every bit as fast as the 550 only not as twitchy so it's more stable.

Here's the VCR file if you want to check it out: http://s39.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1...U3FVTJ5HDW5R87

The scary thing is, I messed up the second last corner so I know I could shave off a little more time. 1:29 flat doesn't seem too unrealistic.

It's just a VCR file, not an actual video. You need to have the game installed to watch it. Thanks for the offer though.

Nice lines Dan, but did you still have driving aids on? You got to ditch those things man or you'll never really learn how to control these cars. Of course, now that I've said that you're going to tell me that was with no aids. In which case

Oh, and thanks to whichever one of you guys changed the thread title.

OK, maybe more than

Donington/Saleen/Auto-clutch only

Dan still has me by a whisker!

This was just a quick hatchet job setup from the one that came with the game. The car was not very well behaved in braking or over the bumps.

Congrats Billiam!
I was still using TC and ABS but now that I know I can beat my old time I can start to remove the assists.

LOL ok I've got good news and bad news...

Good news, I broke my best lap time.

Bad news, the next lap I decided to turn off all the aids, and, well, I'll let the log do the talking....

Doesnt this game support those 3d glasses that have motion sensors? I heard that in the in car view you can look all around like in real life.

Correct. You're thinking of the TrackIR sytem. Although, it's just a head movement tracker. No glasses or 3D involved.

http://www.naturalpoint.com/trackir/.../game-gtr.html

There's a couple of videos toward the bottom of the page that show the system in action with GTR.

Looks like we're going to have old school GTR (literally) in a few months. GT Legends has been announced for a Fall release. A new DX9 rendering engine to boot.

That 300SL cockpit shot is

It's a whole new game. Same developer and publisher combo (Simbin & 10Tacle Studios). Linkage below, but there really isn't much there beyond the screenies and a primitive video from an early build of the game.

Actually, I just thought of something. "Fall release" is probably referring to Europe. It might not be until sometime in Winter before we see it in North America. Christmas gift? Nah, I know I won't be able to wait.

If you guys haven't done so already, I definitely recommend the new Escort mod for GTR by the Core Team. You wouldn't think a 270 HP 1974 Escort would be fun, but let me tell you they're a freakin' blast! The mod can be obtained from the downloads section at:
