Official GTR Discussion Thread (PC) - 56K warning

Well, now that I've had the game for a while I figured it was time to post the obligatory batch of screenshots. I think srika and I are the only people here that race on the PC, but I guess eye candy can't hurt either way. I also snagged a 30 sec video clip, but I don't have anywhere to host it.

BTW - This game is hands down the best racing sim available for the PC. Which means it's also quite challenging.

Oh well, here goes...

Srika, I'd be up for some LAN racing with this once you and your crew have got some laps under your belts. Just let me know. I can also point you to some quality add-ons (Imola, Watkins Geln, Road America tracks, Porsche Supercup car set). Feel free to PM me.

I went to an EB Games today and they told me that GTR isn't going to be released until September 11.

Well if I can't buy it, I have no problem bootlegging it.

There's a crack for everything, but GTR uses the Starforce protection system which is supposed to be a pretty tough cookie. Don't be surprised if it's hard to find.

The North American release was supposed to have been May 3rd. It looks like it's stuck in a perpetual "any time now." For some reason Fry's was carrying the English version of the International Release. That's what I picked up. I just checked outpost.com however, and they show the blue box for the North American version and a satus of "pre-order now."

It's supposedly been confirmed that the North American version will be the exact same game as the International. It's just a matter of who has distribution rights over here. Several people in the U.S. reported purchasing the International version from gogamer.com and received it really quick. They showed it in stock when I just checked. You can also check interactcd.com as they tend to specialize in European imports as well. Don't know if etiher of these places ship North of the Border, though.

I wonder if this would work with my friends wheel. He has the sickest wheel for racing games, true 6 speed with clutch and gated shifter, but the only game that we know that supports it is Viper Racing.

I have to find the link to wheel know.

If you think the Act Labs stuff was something, then check out what I'm being seriously tempted by.

Price is really pushing the "...if you have to ask..." range. I was quoted just under $500 for a fully loaded set of pedals. I think you can probably get a "more basic" set for about $300-$400. Oh, and ummmmm... that wasn't a typo. That's just the pedals. Here's the site:

On a similar note, I was gonna put this on this first post about the pedals, but I think he may actually have a life and be out tonight.

Aside from the $1100 wheel set linked above, what are you guys using for controllers? I'm using a modded XBOX controller which is definitely limiting my times. My best lap on Donington in the F550 is 1:30 flat but I have a replay of someone turning a 1:27 and it was super smooth.

I don't have anywhere near the throttle control that he did.

I use either a Logitech MOMO Force (that is unfortunately discontinued) - or lately I have been using the Logitech Driving Force Pro - that was made for GT4, and is fully compatible with PC as well.

You definitely need a wheel to fully appreciate this game.

First of all congrats on getting the game Dan.

To answer your question, I'm using the discontinued "red" version of the old Logitech Momo Force. I'm about 90% certain Srika is using the same thing.

As far as products currently on the market, I've seen several people that said they were very happy using the Logitech Driving Force Pro (DFP) with GTR. Since it's actually a PS2 wheel, I have no clue what they were using for drivers on the PC. Of course, now that I've said that, I'll tell you that Srika has also had the DFP and he said that he preferred his old "Logitech Red."

As far as your lap time Dan, I don't consider three sconds to be too far out of the ball park compared to a hot lap from one of the GTR "aliens." I don't race online so I'm only really concerned with how I do versus the AI. If I start trouncing them at a given track, I just crank up the AI strength. Maybe you, Srika, and I can compare personal best lap times?

I just checked online at a couple local stores and it looks like wheels are kind of hard to come by. Future Shop has the MOMO force wheel but it's not the funky red variety. I'll probably just pick one up and give it a try.

I don't consider my lap time to be all that great because I have to use traction control and ABS just so I can make it around the track. Without them, I'm doing donuts at the starting line.

Sounds like maybe you just have a bad throttle pot. If the new Logitech doesn't come to pass, maybe you can look into just getting a replacement pot (or set of them) for the wheel you do have.

yea I have the same MOMO wheel as you Billiam... as for drivers for the DFP - nothing special - in fact since I had the drivers for the MOMO loaded, it was just plug and play - uses the same drivers.

And I have traction control and ABS on as well - the game is a bit TOO realistic without em... I mean, it's a bit ridiculous. I tried a few online games where TRAC and ABS were disabled and damn, it was crazy.

I think I will be trying the F550 @ Donington tonight

sweet - 3 GTR players - davo-cls - are you in on this??? then we would have 4

I don't have a wheel, I'm using one of these:

I just cut the wire and put a USB connector on the end.

I'm going to check out a couple shops on my way home from work. So hopefully I'll get some in tonight.

Oh boy, I'm really gonna really come across as a snob on this one but you're going to have to a whole Hell of a lot of convincing to get me to drive with TC and/or ABS. Srika man, I think maybe you need to shave a pound or two of lead of those feet of yours

If we end up racing together, maybe we can try an "honor system" spec setup or something.

hey - I didn't say I couldn't do it. I will race without TC or ABS tonight. And I assure you, no "honor" system will be needed, as you can set the rules before racing. muhwahwahwhawhawhawa... oh, oops.

I think the main issue I have is the ABS - I love trail-braking. Lack of TC doesn't bother me as much.

GTR is the first sim I've ever played where you can really feel the difference in front end bite if you use the brakes to keep the weight up there. Unfortunately, I've always been a "classical" brake in a straight line driver so I can't say I'm taking advantage of this particular bit of realism. There are probably a half dozen or so corners I find myself just naturally trail-braking on entry but that's about it. If I consciously try to trail-brake on the other corners it throws me off and I end up loosing time.

BTW - Have either of you guys raced the Hitchin fictional track? It's borderline absurd as to the the possibility of it ever existing in real life but I'm finding it really fun to race on.

I picked up a Logitech Momo Force wheel on the way home. Soooooo sweeeet.

You're absolutely right about feeling front end bite Billiam, it's pretty cool. Since I've never raced with a wheel before it's going to take a little getting used to but I like what I see so far. Although I haven't been able to break my lap record that i set with the xbox controller, I am far more consistant. I just did a 10 lap race at 1:32/lap +/- 0.2/lap. Now that I have the consistancy down I try to speed things up a bit.

I also tried playing around without the traction control turned on and I managed to do a whole race without spinning but I wasn't very fast. I think I'm being a little overly cautious but there's a fine line between being too cautious and doing donuts.
