I would treat that post as a living document ... I'm sure some things will change, but the overall goal is getting another motor with more strength + bigger turbochargers / supporting mods.
It really depends on the condition of this 180,000 mile motor - I know pretty much the full service history and I'm optimistic it'll be in good shape.
I know this is an unpopular position ... especially if you're building up a motor .. but:
Playing Devils advocate here but, part of me may be open to the idea of not refreshing a single thing and just replacing the rods . These motors are generally bulletproof if taken care of .... not uncommon to see unopened factory motors pushing 500whp after 250k miles with no real signs of aging (rod knock, eating bearings, etc).
If the motor did grenade .. Cost wise would be out a whopping $250 (motor / fluids). If I don't touch anything and it's assembled properly, there's a good chance it would hold together for it's intended purpose for a decent amount of time.
First and foremost, thanks @thoiboi for pushing me to get my headlights upgraded .. I mean hell, it only took me 3 years .
I purchased some DEPO E-code headlights ("high" quality OEM RS4 Valeo knock offs) and a Morimoto 35W & D2S HID kit.
Couldn't be happier with the light output / color, best part is it utilizes all OEM headlight connectors with no ballasts dangling anywhere:
Still need to fully aim the headlights, ran out of time and got them "good enough" without blinding people .
Went by Harbor Freight for an engine stand .. of course, they were out of stock but will be good by Wednesday. 20% off coupon should put this at about $50 after tax.
Buddy of mine helped pick up the motor today - took my engine hoist / wallet to make it happen .. motor doesn't look pretty but it'll be fully torn down anyways:
If I'm honest, I don't have a good sense of when I will actually tear into this thing. If I were to have a rough ETA of getting the bottom end assembled, I'd say 3-6 months tops ... just depends on the condition of the motor / what needs refreshing.
I don't have many kill stories lately, but I did have a bolt on C5 Z06 try me on the highway today. His car sounded mean .. exhaust was super loud and it pulled pretty good.
We did 2 x 60-120 runs and I had 4-5 car lengths on him each time .. his car was definitely faster than the DCT M4 I ran months ago.
Nice project ahead. Look forward to following the progress. At least this time it is by choice too.
Thanks guys.
Honestly, I am second guessing the project at this time. The motor was cheap, but .. for a reason.
It has 0 accessories - no starter, alternator, IM, missing sensors, missing timing components such as pullies, missing fuel rail, missing spiderhose, etc.
I'm still open for doing a built bottom end, but it would be so much easier if I found a more complete motor with less mileage.
Minimum, it's $1000 to do a shitty job refreshing the motor .. and there's a good chance I'd need to spend another $1-$2k to do it right w/ the right bearings, balancing, and machine work ... that doesn't count for the RS6 turbos, injectors, and clutch setup.
I'm an excitable person ... gets the best of me sometimes.
I still have a build sheet / next steps ... who knows, maybe it'll be something I start later this year.
In the meantime, I'll enjoy a good running B5 ... I can start focusing on FINALLY finishing that big brake kit installation / getting loose ends tied up.
Maybe ... just maybe I'll get the roof re-painted too.
may i sell you this upgraded parachute for your trip back down to earth? it'll stop you better than the one you currently have. c'mon bro...running a sale...it's a good deal.
paypal ready
No no .. I didn't build a motor (And .. in retrospect, so glad I didn't with these current times ), although, I've been keeping busy with maintenance / fixes.
First, I started with a driver seat swap. My original driver's seat had 3 large tears that were out of the question for repair, so I sourced a new driverseat for $50.
Old:
New:
Pain in the ass by yourself since the seat weighs about 50-60lb. In addition to that, the "new" seat's harness was all chopped up, metal brackets all bent out of shape, and I had to take a lot of parts from my old seat to make this one functional again.
Done:
Next was axle boot / CV regrease. Truthfully, I let this go on FAR too long .. maybe 4-5k miles. I changed it and not even 2k miles later it ripped again .
Luckily, CV joint grease was still wet and didn't have any noticeable wear since I last took it apart. Regrease, reboot, repeat. Stupid B5s
Also, changed the oil with LiquiMoly 5W40 w/ new MANN filter:
Since coronavirus has given me some added time & empty roads, I figured I'd try a crack at doing another 60-130 run and see how much quicker my car is vs the run I did months ago.
.5 of a second quicker - 9.4 vs 8.89
For reference, I attached a screenshot to a Stage 1+ bolt on Audi RS3 which did a 8.99. DA is higher but pretty close performance wise on the highway.
That's great you got that replacement seat...I'm guessing the damage/rips from the old one is bothersome and annoying (it'd bug me like a scab, LOL). Great update, sir.

#AudiZine
(#HyundaiZine for me)
100%. Something I noticed every time I got in the car

Thanks dude!
Disassembling / reassembling the CV joint is a bit cumbersome, but, worst part is the fact I needed 5 pairs of rubber gloves, 4 shop towels, some papertowels .. and I still made a mess.
I wore clothes I knew I'd ruin and I inspected every square inch of my shoe ... wife would leave me if I tracked any grease in the house
