Finally ... last piece of the puzzle for a FINISHED intake setup.
I found this carbon fiber heatshield second hand on the forums. The 034 intake system retails for around $500 and it includes a heatshield, MAF housing, and a silicon elbow, bit much for my tastes.
Since I already have an intake / MAF housing / filter in 1 unit, I figured adding a heatshield would be easiest since I would have to retune the car if I changed my intake setup.
I picked this up for $200 shipped. Best part is, I already had a 3.5" PVC coupler and just needed a small silicon coupler to make it work.
Car is no longer sucking up heat straight from the exhaust manifold
I'm sure it'll drop intake air temperatures further.
I need to run some logs to see if it changed anything but otherwise, car is running well within it's AFR range.
I eventually want to take it out for some more Dragy runs to see if light wheels and intercoolers help my times at all ... I'm sure the car picked up at least 1-2mph.

Generally speaking, when I'm quiet ... I'm busy .
I got some good maintenance out of the way, some of it was long long overdue.
Like any 20 year old car, there's still a lot to do. Next is getting my center LCD repaired, rear upper control arm bushings pressed, and start hunting for remaining pieces to fit my Toureg 4 Piston brake caliper upgrade.
I am so dissatisfied with my car's braking performance as of late ... it'll probably be one of those "Why didn't I do this sooner!" moments once completed.
Since late September:
- Wheel balance
- Alignment: - .5 degrees all around.
- Inner & outer tie rods on both ends
- Rear differential carrier bushing replacement - poly
- New upper intercooler hose with better fitment, old one was quite stretched and honestly .. I didn't trust it 1 bit.
- Check valve replacement - broke upon disassembly ... this is the 3rd one @ 18 dollars a piece
- Rebuilt my driver-side rear caliper ... which is STILL dragging. Makes me think I should pony up and buy 2 x new rear calipers ...
Sitting pretty:
And ... apart:
Old tie rod removed:
Busted boot ... no wonder my steering was popping.
In with the new:
Installed - having a tool specifically designed for removing inner tie-rods was a life saver. The "nut" for removing it from the rack is 37mm
Rear differential carrier removed, bushings were mush. Poly bushings ready for installation and no need for getting it pressed
Burned & pryed the old bushings out:
One of the many check valves I've broken ... new one installed:
New Intercooler hose - Fitment doesn't look great, but it's certainly a lot better than the ones that came with the intercooler. Hose measures in roughly 3/4" longer.
In addition to that, I grinded down the frame rail so it sits much more flush.
The rear differential carrier bushings, alignment, and tierods were definitely the most rewarding part of this maintenance. Steering feels so much tighter, drivetrain doesn't thump forwards/ backwards, and there's not a single vibration in the steering wheel at any speed.
Here's a few videos with the rear muffler removed .... yeah, this is definitely going to be straight piped minus the mid-muffler in the coming weeks
Sounds so good!

It'll be a big change vs last time ... Car picked up 175whp since you last rode in it ...
Probably the best $20 I've ever spent - car has a solid feel to it on / off throttle and the best part? No major vibrations added.

Bushing upgrades are so overlooked. I bet that rides so much better now.
Nice work as always.

Trying to get a day designated for the remainder of my repairs and start focusing on interior a bit more.
Steering wheel upgrade - something like this:
Sport package aluminum trim:
So many things to do ...

MMMMMMMM that steering wheel is HAWT. I thought about upgrading my steering wheel on the TL when I was still driving it.. You can look into reaching out to Dallas Custom, they were supes popular in 3GTL land for custom wrapped wheels: Dallas Custom Steering Wheel

Probably the one "regret" I have for the S5 is that I swapped out the flat-steering wheel for the round one because we needed the heated option. Otherwise, no-brainer.

Audi has some weird packaging.
Here's a sports sedan with a flat bottom steering wheel and sport bucket seats!
Oh, your hands get cold in the winter? No flat bottom wheel for you.
Oh, it gets hot in the summer and you don't want swamp ass? Back to the regular, cooled seats.
