Had some fun with the B5 this weekend ...

Good buddy of mine got together after C&C to do some runs between my B5 and his Tesla Model 3 performance ... was not disappointed, footage is awesome

Takeaways: Holy shit, Teslas are fast from a dig / low roll

I decided to not do any dig runs because I didn't really want to break anything, but we did do a 20mph roll and as you'll see in the video .. they're rockets from down low.

I'll shut up now .. enjoy the footage.

Mmmmmhmmm. Mexico is about 30 minutes from my house so it's pretty convenient.

It continues to surprise me, given it's just bolt-ons and slightly larger turbos. My buddy (who also has a Stage 3 B5 S4) said he was surprised how quickly my car moved away from him over 80mph and kept up even from a 40mph roll.

I will say though, my car does not compare to the Tesla from any low speed dig or roll - the moment multiple speed transmissions make it's way into electric cars .. my car will no longer have any advantage. I would say my car won 2/3 races ... I technically passed him on the 3rd race but it was well before 100mph ... his car will out perform mine in every scenario in the 1/4 mile.

I knew they were fast but, I have a new appreciation for electric cars after having a few friendly runs.

So fun.

if you car had the modern DCT or ZF8, i think you will win almost every time from a roll...
While 6mt is more fun, but it is not gonna win many drag races if both cars have similar performance and the other one is "super" auto with no lag.

You can tell that he pulls away every time you shift and you gain on him right after.

100% - with good launch control & a dual clutch transmission ... my car would run low to mid 11 second passes all day long. 120mph ET confirms that.

The B5s 1st to 2nd gear change is not great for drag racing.

1st is too short, throws are long, transmission does not like being shifted quickly, and 2nd is too long .. makes for a really weak car in the 1/8th mile unless you go apeshit and no lift shift it. I don't have the balls to no lift shift because I would inevitably pop a shift collar and it would need a rebuild .

Highway is what this car is made for.

Been awhile since I've updated this thread!

I've been keeping the turd polished and added a few touches along the way - ordered a 2nd set of upper control arms (knocking ... again, wtf) and found some refreshed rear upper arms with PowerFlex bushings already pressed.

Installation was a breeze and the car's rear end feels a bit firmer - the old bushings were totally trashed / collapsed.

Most fruitful update - So, you guys remember that sweet sports interior I bought? Yeah ....

.
.
.
.
.
.

Turns out, the rear upper seats were for an Avant ... not a Sedan .. so, it didn't fit .

Seller assured me it was coming from a Sedan but he dooped me and I'm pretty sure he did it intentionally. The rear levers for lowering the rear seats are different and there's an additional headrest in the center - these are 2 details I should have caught but didn't ... live and learn.

I listed the wagon interior up on my local groups .. no interest after being listed for 1 month.

I listed them on the national groups and I had a fellow from CO that was willing to trade his Sedan sports interior for my Wagon sports interior. Only issue is .. he's in CO.

After some negotiation, we decided we were meeting half way in St. George, Utah and making the exchange.

Drove up on Friday night, drove out first thing in the morning with the bag:

FYI - V1 saved my ass 3 times.

The deal we struck was - exchange door pulls & rear seats.

Pros:

My old door cards were totally stripped - no speakers, switches, nothing - new door cards are complete with the exception of the rears having no speakers. Has sport aluminum trim!
Rear seats are in good condition / are for a sedan
Included some black hazard button / change tray trim - extremely hard to find.
Including front aluminum trim.

Cons:

Didn't swap his front seats - they were in a little bit better condition but I'll manage to fix what I have.
The drive / gas $.

Otherwise, I think I came out on top of this deal minus having to drive 1000 miles round trip to get them.

Items left to do:

- Pull rear upper sections / bolt in seats - easy peezy.
- Pull & install all 4 door cards - swap rear door speakers and replace 2 x door handle springs (in transit). Additionally, I want to replace the blue door pulls with the black ones off of my car right now (I think the blue plastic looks really tacky).
- Repair upholstery on driverseat bolster - I elected to not take it to an upholstery shop yet .. I have a plan .. we'll see how it turns out
- Once repaired - Pull 2 front seats, install 2 front seats
- Pull front wood / dash trim and install aluminum trim - going to be a pain in the *ass* but it'll be worth it.

Here's a quick test fit of the rear seat .... motivation has been restored

Thanks for reading .. starting to get super excited about finishing this up now that I have the proper parts.

Gotta be honest though, T...
don't toss the black leather just yet either...
I really LOVE that tufted look that you have with that...always thought that was the
most plush and old school thing about your interior.
The blue is cool and desirable, I know...but I love that black

I think you'll love it when it's done.

Also .. little bit of a seat / upholstery update.

After calling around to a few shops, some wanted $200-$300 to do just the driverside seat bolster .

I figured if I got the side bolster done, might as well get the lower driverside cushion done too .... I could see it being a $500-$750 job really quick.

I decided I would throw $40 bucks total at it (Seat doctors Black leather Dye, Seat Doctors crack filler, and a $6 dollar tube of black silicone) and see what kind of results I could get.

Pretty happy with the results .. only time will tell on how it'll hold up but it's pretty flexible / durable by the touch:

From this:

Silicone added:

I made sure and really pumped a lot of silicone underneath the fabric to make a flexible backing:

Let it dry 24 hours, applied seat doctors crack filler for a smoother look:

Sanded the crack filler down and applied 3 coats of Seat Doctors leather dye:

Not perfect but, a helluva lot better than it was.

I will post a 3 month update on how it's holding - Hopefully will have the full interior swapped in the next 2-3 weeks.

Thanks for reading!

Not bad at all but for a car like this that you have put so much effort into making perfect, I would have just dropped the cash to get it done right once and for all. That way you know in your mind that it's perfect and not just a cheaper fix. You can always do it in the future though in case this doesn't hold up.

That's my thought as well - if it doesn't hold up it won't be hard to clean up / have done professionally.

Otherwise, I love trying new DIY projects like this.

Thanks man! Maybe you will be the person I hit up to have this done when my DIY repair fails.

Hope all is well. Also, 4 years later my headliner is still holding up perfectly. Swedit FTW!

Finally made some traction on getting some of my interior installed - I'm 90% done with the project now.

Take aways:

1: Buy a B5 S4 with sport interior already installed from factory - it's a big project to undertake considering the interior is 20 years old and it can be a tedious restoration process.

2: Be more detail orientated when part shopping - not only did this make me drive all the way to Utah to get the right parts, I lost factory options in doing so.

So, my only regret with undertaking this project is my car lost some of it's features it came with from factory. My car shipped from factory with the cold weather package - with the new interior, the front seats are now non-heated, and it lost it's Bose audio.

Normally, I'm much more function over form but this seat swap was purely for looks / rarity. Glass half full part of me says it's a race car and lacks any refinement anyways ... on a positive note, the car lost about 30lb. (Heated seats are heavy and the rear door cards are now feather light compared to the old).

Do I regret it as a whole? Hell no! It looks incredible in person and the aluminum trim really compliments the rest of the interior and mirrors.

Otherwise, the seat swap was relatively easy and painless, but getting the door cards restored, clips repaired, and the "upholstery" repair took the longest by far.

Enjoy a few pics of the somewhat finished product - only thing left to do is installing the front dash trim, swapping out the shifter surround (part is on it's way), and doing another deep clean of the alcantara fabric.

I love the look!

Thanks for reading.

Again, it's a racecar at this point, who cares.
If you're happy with the look and it upped the resale on it
then you made the right move. Either way, the adventure is
what we're after with our dumb car missions.

Curious, being as honest with yourself as you can...
can you tell the difference in your sound system?

The heated seats were the only thing the wife actually enjoyed in the B5 ..

Otherwise yeah, I'm super happy with how the project turned out and it did up the resale value by at least a grand or two.

Any clean 6 speed Nogaro / sports package car fetches good money nowadays.

Not at all.

One detail I didn't mention was, the new door cards did have aftermarket speakers / tweeters in them. Only downgrade was the rear door speakers are deleted all together . 2 rear deck speakers are still there, though.

That's just rear fill...I'm sure that won't make a difference...
if you REALLY decided to be a pedoaudiophile you would likely go
fully active front component and a good sub and call it a day anyway.
or some jensen bottom shelf for the rear fill.

Was just curious...the B&O is the best oem system I've ever heard in person
so I'd be very sad to lose any part of that.

Adding a grand of value to a depreciating asset is awesome.
J literally will think any car we ride in without seat heater is uncivilized.
She gets hot and cold so easily.

No wonder J / L get along so well. They're always having trouble regulating their body temperature .

I think an audio upgrade in the future would be great but I'm not super motivated to do it at this time.

One item I would spring for would be buying a RNS-E to swap out the 20 year old headunit - they offer bluetooth add-ons & firmware upgrades to help with integration & bug fixes:

Doesn't offer the most functionality but I like how it feels period correct / OEM.
