Just my opinion, but I don't think the punishment for DUI should be any different between any two given drivers unless they've had a previous DUI. Drinking and driving is simply that, and (IMO) is just as dangerous no matter what your age.
I don't disagree with that, but I am not naive and neither are you. You are judged based on past activities and potential to repeat a bad decision.

If you are a judge and you are looking over a record of someone driving for 20+ years and no previous DUI and you look at someone driving for 2 years and he crashed his car going 100+ and drunk, then what will you think?

I was 19-20. I had a bit of help getting me to school and getting me home, but I had to get from KSU to the Johnson Ferry-East Cobb area on my own. I rode CCT, which if yo ever have, you'll know it's a joke of a system. Ride from school to the transfer station, then take another bus near to work then walk a half mile. If I didn't have school I'd have to ride my bike about 5 miles to the nearest bus stop. It wasn't easy, but it built character. Led to me losing a fiancee, though.

Bottom line is, if you don't want your life ruined, don't do the ruining.

I don't care who you are, what kinda car you drive, you don't drive drunk, or buzzed, or tipsy, or whatever. Imagine waking up the next day hearing you killed someone, or a baby, or a kid, or fuck, someone you know.

You were a tool, your "friends" were bigger tools. I am sure you (Reese) were right next to him doing "120", thinking you were cool and tough with your cars. Luckily no one was hurt. Your license should be taken away for a looooong time, even permanently based on how your car looks.

In closing, you and all involved are morons and don't deserve the "privilege" of driving a car.
The most constructive post here.

Sorry, I meant two different-aged drivers. I completely agree with your post however.

If you had two drivers, one 20 years old, and the other 45, both with clean records, both in with their first DUI, would you look at their cases differently?

Wow this really turned into a mess....

I do think people are right, the op should not have driven the way he did. This forum has a lot of members both young and old and I'm pretty sure that a good majority, at least 75% have driven while under the influence. People do dumb things when they're drunk..shit happens. And yes it would have sucked if he had killed someone, but why did this turn into a 10 page bash?? All seems a little uncalled for to me...

Yes. Not sure of the laws in Canada, but in the US, a 20 year old with their first DUI has broken 2 laws, underage drinking and DUI. On top of that, the 20 year old has maybe 4 years of driving under his belt so in 4 years he has one violation. The 45 year old has about 29 years of driving experience and has only one violation.

While it could be viewed as age discrimination, it's based on history and the 45 year old has a long history of good driving, the 20 year old does not.

If we were talking about a 45 year old who got his license at age 41, he no longer gets credit for the long history of good driving, he's just like the 20 year old.

It's not about the number of years on the planet, it's the number of years behind the wheel.

Personally, I like the punishments in some of these other countries. OP should appreciate the fact he does not live there. Damn shame that Darwin didn't get full grip this time, hopefully lesson learned. I work with someone who got two DWI's back to back (within a week and a half), he will be getting his license back soon since it's been a few years.

El Salvador: First offence is your last - you are shot by firing squad.

Finland & Sweden: Jail - 1 year hard labor plus fines. NOTE: in Finland, if an individual yields a vehicle to someone guilty of drunk driving, they will be fined or imprisoned for up to 1 year.

Bulgaria: A second conviction results in execution.

Malaysia: the driver is jailed and if he is married, his wife is jailed too

Hell yeh I would look at the cases differently. A 20 year old has no real history of being a responsible driver. We're not the only one that thinks that. Insurance companies all feel that way too.

dont you think drinking and driving is also uncalled for.. ......... prevention is better than cure...what if he actually killed someone you knew, would you have said..."shit happens, people do dumb shit when they're drunk"?

First off you let him drive drunk so you aren't really a friend, and you are dumb enough to drive behind a drunk driver. The OP should know better than to post that he was drinking and driving recklessly, you should know nothing good will come from posting that than getting flamed. These types of drivers are the ones that really scare me. They don't even consider that they could hurt/injure someone else till that other person is dead and don't care till they realize they will get jail time and be like Tony Hayward and say "I want my life back".

BTW saying everyone makes mistakes so it is ok is such bs. I have been driving 12 years now and have never driven drunk.

AMEN.
I could care less what happens to the fool that drives drunk, ITS THE POOR INNOCENT PERSON that dies because of somebody' "MISTAKE".

Perfect example here:

Let me take back my previous statements..

OP I love you. Its so unfortunate how alcohol can affect your driving, but you know, practice makes perfect. Hopefully things go better next time Let us know what your next car will be! So we can go out and look for you going 120 down a residential road...dude I cant get over how awesome that is!

Love, SLushhYYY
