Angry Honeymoon's Over...

Well as if I didn't have enough crap going on in my life right now, my brand new car is now giving me grief. Tonight I pulled into the driveway with a friend and the right front wheel started making the most awful metal-on-metal grinding and clanking noise. It's totally speed-dependent and my friend identified it as coming from the right front wheel...sounds like the bearing has packed up already. So with only 700 miles on the odometer, it's getting its first tow in the morning.

I feel like such an idiot. I read the forums, seen some of the problems and thought to myself that only the angry people post here. Surely the cars can't be all bad. If they were all bad, we'd know about it. Looks like I got lucky. I have a feeling that a Lemon Law buy-back may be in my future because cars that give you trouble this early in life are never good eggs. I'm going to have a real hard time trusting the car after this. Wishing I'd gone with the CR-V...

Before you get your self too worked up just let them see whats wrong. The same thing could have happened to a CR-V

Lemon law wouldnt apply because this is the first time and only issue.

No need to feel like an idiot, unless you actually built the car. A buyers let down is terrible on a major purchase like this. Hopefully this will be the only glitch with the car. A year from now this won't even be a spec in the rear view mirror.

I'm sure Hyundai will take care of you on this.

Better for it to happen brand new. Was clearly a factory fault. Tow it to the dealer, get it fixed, move on.

depending on what it is.
I've had three wheel bearings fail on me in 2 different cars.
and i've only experienced a droning noise, as if the car had mud tires on.
never a metal on metal noise, so i would suspect something else, maybe it's just a rock or something stuck in your caliper...

Started the car this morning after it sat in the garage for about ten hours and the noise is gone. I'm at the dealership now so they can take a look at everything.

They took a look at the brakes and all the suspension components and he said everything looks as it should. The noise has yet to resurface so hopefully she's just teething.

Hyundai recalled Sonata due to issue with Steering Column

This might relate to your grinding issue:
" Sun Sep 26, 6:04 am ET
SEOUL (Reuters) – Hyundai Motor, South Korea's top automaker, will recall some 139,500 Sonata sedans sold in the United States, due to problems with the steering wheel that could cause a loss or reduction of control.

The automaker announced the recall after the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened a probe into steering problems in August, a move analysts said was aimed at heading off criticism that it was slow to respond.

"Hyundai's pre-emptive action is fast enough to avoid any criticism in handling safety issues," said Kim Byung-kuk, an analyst at Daishin Securities.

No accidents or injuries occurred as a result of improper assembly or loose steering connections, Hyundai said in an email statement on Sunday.

The vehicles were built from December 11 through September 10.

Hyundai sold 128,484 Sonata sedans in the period from January to August, 35 percent of its U.S. car segment sales during the period.

The firm's latest recall comes as the auto maker seeks to increase production of the Sonata, its best-selling model in America, at its plant in Alabama.

Lee Sang-hyun, an analyst at Hana Daetoo Securities in Seoul, said the recall is unlikely to hit Hyundai's sales.

"However, since potential defects related to assembling are not a significant problem with its quality, it will barely impact Hyundai's sales," Lee said.

In February, Sonata, underwent the first recall this year that affected 47,000 units in South Korea and U.S. due to front door lock faults.

Hyundai has been one of the stronger performers in the U.S. auto sector in recent years, gaining market share and logging an 8.3 percent sales increase in 2009, while the industry fell 21 percent overall to the lowest levels since the early 1980s.

Hyundai's affiliate Kia Motors said in early September its co-chief executive resigned to take responsibility for nearly 86,000 recalls of some of its models, including the Soul compact sedan.

Thee best thing to do is lett them fix it. If it keeps happening, check you states' lemon law.

I had a bearing go out on a new frontier that i had. I took it in and it was fixed under warranty.

As CL stated, that's what warranties are for. It may just be a hiccup of sorts, Though my 09 MDX has been absolutely flawless after 10 months, my prior three NEW cars had an initial hiccup:

07 Accord V6 EX-L --- bad rear window regulators (12 miles)
05 Murano --- throttle body crapped out at 13k
02 Maxima --- MAF sensor crapped out at 12k

All were covered under warranty and the problems never resurfaced. Not to mention, each proved to be VERY reliable for us.

I have the impression you'll be ok with the Santa Fe and it doesn't hurt that you have a great warranty in the event things really do go south.

My Expedition caught fire under the dash. It was three days old. A wire had been pinched while being assembled which caused a short. The entire dash was replaced. That has been the only issue with it, and it's been a stellar vehicle since.

Don't let one inconvenience determine how the vehicle will now perform. It's no doubt something that can be corrected.

I waited over two months for that truck. My dealer is very good to me, and usually sells me stuff at invoice. The fire wasn't that bad, and there wasn't really much damage. They said they could take an entire dash from a new F150 with the same trim level and colour and put it in within a day. I was a little leery, but when I picked Eddie back up it was perfect. So far there hasn't been any other problems with it.

The same thing happened when my girlfriend left her sisters place this spring in her Impreza. She called me in a panic with this god aweful screetching/grinding sound after she came to a complete stop then started again on the highway.

I told her to back up 10' or so feet and try it again and all was fine. I have only seen it happen a few times but you probably had a small rock etc jam in by the caliper and rotor and when you backed up in the morning it worked its way loose............aaaaand maybe im way off in left field but it has happened to me before and it would show no damage to the rotor etc..

especially when i bluntly tell them, i will just go to another dealer, along with all my parts buying too (last year alone has been a couple of thousand $$$)(and the parts counter guys know you as soon as you walk in, and they let you do your own wholesale account with them too )

and they also know not i do indeed know more people at that dealer then they thought

i have seen a marble sized rock, up inside the parking brake drum, as said made a god awful noise, pulled the wheel, looked, saw the rock, pushed the dust shield some, it dropped out, toss the wheel back on, and it was golden after that
how the hell the guy got it stuck up in there idk, but a very simple fix though

How is this relevant to the Santa Fe? It's not even the same issue.

Different models, different components.

But I, on the other hand, will probably have to take the Sonata in for that. Picked it up on 9/20 and the cut-off date on the recall is 9/10. I'll have to look up the production process database tomorrow to see if it's affected.

Hopefully I will just have someone I know in Quality take a look instead of having to take it to the dealership.

That really sucks. I would be pissed as well, but there is nothing you can do about. It could happen with any vehicle you buy, it's just one of those things.

I doubt it's chronic with the entire model line-up.
Hope it's just a one-off issue.....an easy fix under warranty.

I'm pretty confident that it is not a chronic problem. Otherwise I would've read about it on the quality reports. First time hearing about it, so most likely an isolated issue.
