Yes. The offset crashes produce catastrophic cabin deformation on a lot of late-model cars because they were not engineered to take that hit. However, that hit happens a lot more often than a head-on collision.

So the fact that the offset crash didn't kill the occupants or seriously injury them is a huge leap forward.

For example, this is a 2014 Odyssey ... Look at how the dashboard gets destroyed and it appears the dummy gets hit by the steering wheel in the chest. But it got a good rating because the passenger would have survived without significant injury:

<iframe width="640" height="360" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/Lz2lAbAM-mc?feature=player_detailpage" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Here's a car that did poorly. The latest Gen Rav4. It gets so deformed by the same crash that the entire dashboard moves (including the steering column) so that the airbag actually moves out of the way and the dummy's head glances off it and hits the dash.

^^^ I have no idea what happened to the dummy's legs. I can only assume they were FUBAR'd in the RAV4.

Sorry guys, I was on crack. No coffee today...

I thought the 40 mph test was on pedestrians. I was like I think someone would be dead at that point.

I should probably take a break from work.

I've simply given up. If someone is camping in the left lane, I will pass (safely) on the right. Not going to slow down and let the front end of my car eat up rock chips waiting for him to move.

^My Engrish is coming out.

People just suck at driving no matter where it is, it seems. Two left-only lanes, some jerkoff went into the outer lane at the last moment, then in the middle of the turn, cut into the leftmost turn lane. Crap like that worries me sometimes, and I hate to do it, but I'll usually split-second stereotype someone based on age, race, general appearance, etc. and then choose to give them room in those situations.

Anyone here take a defensive driving class? We all pick up nuances after driving for years, but I keep hearing those are very educational.

I assume everyone is an idiot or irresponsible. But I am having difficulty backing out of parking spots these days because I live around a bunch of rude motherfuckers that will not stop when they see someone backing out. So I have to park somewhere and walk. Which is fine but I have begun to understand why old people drive like they do. People suck.

I have to admit, if someone is driving slowly in the left lane and holding up a bunch of cars and forces me to pass on the right, I will give them a honk as I pass to let them know I highly disapprove. I don't always do it, but I feel like they should realize what they are doing.

I really enjoy driving efficiently... getting to cruising speed quickly and always finding the fastest line. If you prevent me from achieving this, I won't be happy.

I hate people. Too many of them in Chicago.

That is why I love my 3 mile commute. And why I could never live in SoCal, as much as I love visiting.

Drive around midnight on Friday... 7-lane freeway. And traffic still gets slowed 5-10 mph below the limit... wtf?

Usually its construction, otherwise there normally isnt to much traffic at night. Unless you're going through hollywood or the 405/10 intersections.

I saw a 2 series M yesterday. Looked stupid and pointless. I saw a regular ass tiny tire X5 M a few miles down the road from the 2 series. IMO they are killing the prestige

Are you having a bad day? I ask because I've never seen skinny tires on a X5M and the M235i is way better than the previous 135i was.

Not a bad day, had an excellent morning i guess it's just my idea/perception of what M, amg and S means to me. Sure the 2 is a good car in its own way, I just don't like the idea of it being badged as an M car.

The X5 M had these on it (or very similar)... looked dumb especially with the big brakes

This goes back to the fact that the M-badged non M-Car is actually historically accurate as the M535i and M635CSi were both sold by BMW in the 80s.

A cool video and a nice read about a dedicated car enthusiast's 22 year journey restoring a 1957 Jaguar Mark 1...

The E24 M6/M635Csi and E28 M5/M535i are both M-cars, with the M88/3 engine and other upgraded components.
The history on the nomenclature is kinda gray but they were both developed by the M-group.

Talk about feeling inadequate: on the way back from lunch today I encountered the following on the road in this order - 1) 12C; 2) FF; and 3) DB9. I drove next to the 12C for about a 1/4 mile. The sound coming out of that car - Ho.Lee.Crap.

Although, driving Free Willy over the weekend in Banff did have a nice advantage when the rainstorm turned into sleet.

In hindsight, it was fun to drive...but, not at the time trying to traverse through the Parks freeways and get back to our hotel.
