We need more wagons in the states. An S4 Avant is exactly what I'm looking for in a car, but it's not available here.

Funny how I was just in the Model 3 thread and decided to drop in here!

I was looking at various cars as well, and scratched the Golf R off my list due to the manual trans variant. I was also looking at B8.5 S4s, but waffling on that idea now.

Model 3 is a great option, though how often are you going to SC and NY?

I just hit 20k miles and the car is fun to drive, but VW manuals really, truly suck and I'd like a little more space (and a bit more power too). I want a wagon. Specifically, I want an RS6 Avant. But I can't bring myself to dump six figures on a German car that doesn't have the engine in the rear. So, here's what's on my shortlist:
  • 2018+ Panamera Sport Turismo
    • The V8s are still expensive and the V6 is a hard pass. I'm hoping that by the time I'm ready to pull the trigger, the prices for the V8s will drop further
  • 2017+ E63 Wagon
    • Casey is not a fan of the way they look, but...she may get overruled
  • A6 Allroad
    • Expensive for what it is
  • A4 Allroad
    • Yeah I know, completely different compared to the first two cars, but it'scheaper and gives me the ability to pick up a fun car on the side
    • Downside - 4 cylinder. They just sound...bad.

For the most part, the A6 Allroad pretty much nails it. It has a ton of tech, a V6T engine, heated and cooled seats, and gets about the same gas mileage as the R. But, configured the way I'd order it, it's $83k The A4 Allroad is a more "reasonable" $58k, but...four cylinder.

If I were to move away from the idea of a wagon, there's three cars at the top of my list:
  • RS5 Sportback
  • Tesla Model 3 Performance
  • RS3
The RS3 is on the list simply because it's fast as hell. Aside from that, it's a very distant third - it's just a lateral move from the R since it's so small. The idea of a new car is that it can carry a 90lb dog and (eventually) a rear facing car seat. Can't do that in the RS3.

But realistically, out of those three options, the Model 3 is probably the best suited for me. I work from home. I drive maybe 10k miles a year. I have a garage that I can charge it in. I've been thinking about getting solar, and getting the 3 would push me towards it quicker. The only downside, and it's one that's kept me from pulling the trigger before, is range anxiety. The Tesla can travel 299 miles on a charge. I'll need to stop for 30 mins to visit family in SC, or 1 hour when traveling to NY. In the R, it'll make it to SC without a fill up (barely) and I'll need to stop once on the way to NY. But anyway...those are my random thoughts while I sit in the 4 hour planning session with work.

TL;DR - wants a wagon, will most likely get a Model 3
RS5 Sportback, please.

But, if it's wagon which I also think you should totally get (because it's what you really want), get that Merc.

Have you considered the Mercedes C-Class Estate AMG...? Or is that not available in the USA?

No, we were denied the C-Estate here, otherwise, I'd have bought one of those over the sedan.

If the Porsche is really what you want, wait another year for the off lease models to hit dealer lots. First year on sale was MY18 so they'll come off lease sometime in 2021. That's the time to snag one.

The E63 wagon is very high on my next car list provided I can get my accountant to buy in on it but I honestly kind of like the Porsche more...need to wait for depreciation to hit harder.

To be completely honest though, my next car will likely be either a Model 3 or Model Y performance.

That said, I'm content with the Golf for a while longer. Another thing you could do is just get another toy car to have fun with and daily the Golf. Maybe a Jeep?

Nope, they don't give us the joy of one of those otherwise I also would have bought one. They also took away our BMW wagons too.

M, I would urge you to take the Audi Sportback for a drive...While I'm unsure if an RS5 is available readily for test driving, the S5 should be quite abundant. Most stealerships would probably loan one to you for a weekend.

I marched into Audi thinking I was for sure going to get an Avant and walked out with a Sportback. So, you may go the same way and man, an RS5 would more than adequately (without breaking your back like the RS6) meet your thirst for power and hooliganing capabilities.

Panameras are Crossovers are conspicuously not on your list at all. I've never driven one, but I've heard enough good things about the Stelvio that I would test drive one if I was in the market. Their 90's reliability seems to have carried over unchanged, however...

What about a Kia Stinger? It is technically a hatchback. A rear-facing seat might be a little snug.

Your short list has got some great options. I'm just throwing out more suggestions. Nothing builds a real opinion of a car other than seat time.

Out of your list I'd probably lean towards an RS7 (or even an S7). They will likely be practical enough while still behaving properly sporty. The sport factor wouldn't be as prevalent in an A6 or A4. Considering how little you drive the one car, how often do you think you'd really drive a second car?

SC is about twice a year and NY is once. Not much, but enough to potentially annoy me. However, we do have the CR-V.

As the others have said, the only MB estate we can get here is the E class.

The E63 is actually further up the list the the Porsche. The MB is more attainable used in the spec I want. But, you never know

I seriously considered a Guilia before I got the R, but their crappy reliability and dealing with Chrysler dealerships around here scared me off. But yeah, no interest in a crossover

Not a fan of the looks of the Stinger, or the RS7 for that matter. I know I'm in the minority on the RS7 bit, but the design language is a mess to my eye.

You do bring up a good point about the second car though. Realistically, we use my car for the weekends and date nights. Occasionally we'll take it on a road trip, but that's rare since the CR-V gets way better mileage.

I have been reading up quite a bit on the E63 though. I'm going to keep my eyes the market and maybe get out of the R within the year.

You just solved your own dilemma. It is an annoyance but a really minor one. Having to stop and charge is not the worst thing in the world, especially when that kind of trip only happens once or twice a year.

Only caught a quick glimpse, but passed a V90 (pretty sure) and it's such a looker. Really dark color, so couldn't tell at a quick glance if it was an XC or not.

Too bad Volvo reliability is ...they round out the top 3 for worst reliability in this year's JD Power results.

How dare you bring logic into my thread?!?

It is really tempting. I just wish they had a proper wagon in their lineup.

You know, I actually forgot the V60 was available with the T8 powertrain now. I may need to test drive one. My only reservation is the MSRP on them is dangerously close to a 2018 E63 estate. I'm not sure how well they sell though, so there may be deals to be had...

The V90 is sweet, but too expensive for what it is, imo.

No argument there, M. The pricepoint and the reliability are major concerns and reservations otherwise.

Hopefully you get to try that RS5 Sportback though.

I'm biased obviously.

It has some of the cargo space of a wagon but yet, looks like a car so your wife may be less on the fence?

That RS5 is sexy. I'll take mine in green though.

Casey is actually all for me getting a wagon. She knows I will never own an SUV, so if I need the space (a kid is in our future, eventually), a wagon is the reasonable choice

Otherwise I'm getting a 911 and telling her the kid can go in the frunk

Someone say Volvo wagon?
Seats were the best...mileage was the best.
Too bad it wasn't 1 more cylinder and 1 less auto tranny.
If it had been, no lie, that would still have been my daily.

I loved that wagon of yours.

I'm kinda resigned to getting an automatic for the next car, especially since a lot of the cars I'm looking at have really good 8 or 9 speed boxes. And if it's on the slower/lower price end of the spectrum, that frees up cash for a fun, manual second car. But the engine size is a sticking point for me. I'm just not real happy with buzzy 4 cylinders. The R is a ton of fun to drive, but I just want more cylinders.. And I'm not sure if the hybridization of the V60 Polestar is enough for me to overlook the 4cyl in it. But I will still test drive it and see. Apparently the suspension on it is pretty good (it's got manually adjustable Ohlins), albeit a little stiff, and it has Brembo's with two piece rotors - and that torque figure is nothing to sneeze at (494lb-ft). But some of the reviews say the engine sounds rough (as most 4cyls do), it's not as quick as the last Polestar, and the handoff between gas and electric is weird at times.

And for the price, I can get a CPO E63 Estate and have way more car. The upside to the Volvo is gas mileage. Do I go with the slightly smaller wagon that easily gets 30mpg on the highway, or the larger one with 200 extra horsepower (lol) and a 0-60 time deep into the 3s...but will maybe get 22mpg on the highway. I think the Polestar may be eligible for a tax credit as well, but I need to look into that.

i literally watched you not help a guy set up a smart tv (unless you thought a smug smirk was helping)...
you get paid very well for whatever you actually do!
Lord, you are willing to pay big money for your next ride!

You know something funny...that V60 with the edrive 4 cylinder was actually pretty quick! Although it did have the polestar tune from factory, apparently.

T8 V60 if you want newer with warranty
CPO E63 for & potentially higher maintenance (tires) costs and lower MPGs, but probably much higher SPGs (smiles / gal).

Watch the straight pipes videos on the Volvo T8 Polestar models. They were not impressed. Also, Volvos depreciate like crazy so it would actually be more expensive to own than that E63 unless you get a 1-2 year old or off lease Volvo that someone else ate the initial depreciation on.
