Ex-Villeneuve 312T4

Little melancholy this week, as it was the 40th anniversary of the death (5/8/82) of Ferrari F1 driver Gilles Villeneuve (father of Jacques) who always seemed to be at 11/10 with his wild style of driving. To say he occasionally overdrove his race cars is a big understatement. So here is a old (2014) auction of one of his more successful F1 cars 312T4 that he won three races in 1979 and placed 2nd in the WDC to his more senior teammate Jody Schechter.

This particular car (037) is a bit of a Frankenstein as it was rebuilt to a 312T5 and raced in 1980 (very poor results) and was subsequently rebuilt back to the 312T4 with spare parts for one of Enzo's favorite car customers, in the early 80's.

Fun fact, Jody Schechter bought one of the 312T4's from Enzo at the end of 1979 for $75k (~$280K in 2022) after he won the WDC in it. He still drives it occasionally at various Ferrari events.
Literally almost no front end crash structure to protect the driver's legs/feet in this car. Amazing how exposed the front end is.

An odd looking nose/wing, but still a good looking car.

Both cars sold today:
Ferrari 640: $3,753,058 (original est. $2.6m-$5.2m)
Williams FW14: $4,221,539 (original est. $1.56m-$3.12m)

I found it a little surprising considering that although the Williams claimed more wins w/ Mansell, they originally est. the FW14 to be cheaper because Renault removed the powertrain when it was gifted to Mansell.

Wonder if their new owners will restore them back to running order or keep them as basically showpieces. I know they shared that the Ferrari is all-original & untouched from its very last race, so it just needs to be sent back to the factory unlike the Williams which needs to source its engine back.

Just a few short years ago, most vehicles auctioned through Bring a Trailer were a little weird, a little wacky, and a little old. However, the recent popularity of the website has seen much newer cars frequently trade hands through the budding community and currently, there is a rare Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport listed up for sale.

This 2021 model is one of just 60 examples produced worldwide and was delivered new to Bugatti Greenwich in Connecticut. It is up for sale in Beverly Hills, California through a Florida-based dealer with a window sticker, a clean Carfax report, and a clean Montana title. It has been driven just 479 miles (770 km) since leaving the factory.

Bugatti unveiled the Chiron Pur Sport in early 2020. It has the same quad-turbo 8.0-liter W16 as the standard Chiron and pumps out the same 1,479 hp and 1,180 lb-ft (1,600 Nm) of torque. However, Bugatti has revised the transmission and given the Pur Sport closer gear ratios, helping to improve acceleration so it can sprint from 60 to 120 km/h (37-75 mph) in sixth gear roughly two seconds faster than a standard model. The redline of the W16 has also increased by 200 rpm.

Various other modifications were made to the French hypercar. These include the fitment of firmer springs, modified camber valves, and new adaptive damping. The Chiron Pur Sport is also equipped with distinctive wheels wrapped in Michelin Sport Cup 2 R tires measuring 285/30 at the front and 355/25 at the rear.

The original owner of this example opted to have it finished in a combination of bright blue and dark blue. The exterior also features various exposed carbon fiber parts, including the front splitter, side skirts, and rear diffuser. Found within is black Alcantara, contrasting blue stitching, and various matte carbon fiber parts.

A look at the window sticker reveals the car had an MSRP of $3,871,500. Bidding was fast approaching that mark with almost two weeks left in the auction.

It's disappointing GM didn't make more of an effort to bring some of those badass Aussie cars here. The G8 was about the only thing we got, if I remember right?

G8 and the SS, both still command a pretty penny if manual. The SS was a very solid car too.

The Caprice, too, which was like a stretched G8, I think.

Problem with the SS, was that it looked like a Malibu.

Case in point, I stopped in the dealership I used to work for when they were still available & there was one parked in the showroom. Literally thought "When did the SS Malibu come back" before I realized what the car was.
Makes it a bit more inconspicuous, I suppose.

Friend of mine in Austin, TX has a G8-GXP (6AT). Pretty awesome sedan, not trying to borrow too much but it has lots of "Quarks and Feature" due to it's Austrian heritage.

Obligatory $324k I'd buy something else post.

I do love how the G8/SS could be had with a manual and V8 back in the day.

2004 Volkswagen Phaeton V8

Ever so often a Phaeton is for sale in the DC/Baltimore area, this appears to be a used car dealer. Kinda amusing how dated the 2004 infotainment system is. Although a really cool over engineered car (W12 especially but this is a V8), something I'd never even consider but neat to look at.

Paul Walker was a man well-known for his love of fast cars. The star of the Fast and Furious franchise that sparked off a generation of car enthusiasts is remembered for famously driving numerous JDM hero cars throughout those movies. Beyond the silver screen, Walker was a huge Porsche fan too and now his very own 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 is going up for auction.

On its own merits, this 911 is very valuable and rare. When it rolled off of the production line in 1973 it was the fastest German production car on the planet. Equipped with a 2.7-liter flat-six engine it developed 210 horsepower (156 kW) and had a top speed of 149 mph (239 km/h).

Only 1,580 of these cars were ever made after the model itself was inspired by Porsche’s legendary Le Mans-conquering 917 racecar. It was the first of its kind to have a spoiler at the front and the rear and could rocket from 0-60 mph in 6.3 seconds. That’s not quick compared to most modern sports cars but it’s still faster than a 2020 Fiat 124 Spider.

This particular example should be worth even more since it was owned by Paul Walker who Jay Leno himself called “a car guy” on the Tonight Show in 2011. During that same show, Walker talked about his (at the time) recent purchase of this exact car. He had yet to take delivery of it but was clearly excited at the thought of ownership because he said that he bought it without ever getting the chance to test drive it or see it in person.

The car goes over the auction block at Mecum’s Monterey event taking place from August 18th til the 20th. The estimate placed on it starts at $1,000,000 and tops out at $1,250,000. That might sound like a lot for a car with 58,268 miles (93,774 Km) on it but at least the new owner can drive this car without it losing value. We can’t wait to see what the final number ends up being.

The house that newman/haas racing built 29 october 2022

Pretty amazing auction for 40+ cars from Neuman/Haas racing teams throughout the years. ALOT of US open wheel racing history in these cars from Mario to Michael to Mansell to Sebastian...

FEATURING OVER 40 CARS AND HAAS MEMORABILIA

With an overall record of 108 wins and 8 championship seasons, the Newman/Haas Racing team has amassed a history of winning that puts them in the top-tier of Indy Car teams. Fielding undisputed superstars like Michael and Mario Andretti, Nigel Mansell, and Sébastien Bourdais, the team founded by Carl Haas and Paul Newman dominated both the CART and Champ Car series between 1983 and 2011, and forever changed the history of motorsport. Now, the private team plans its most public outing in years, an international auction hosted by RM Sotheby’s of Newman/Haas Racing’s treasured, race-proven chassis and many artifacts from their history.

Without a doubt the most famous and longest-lasting collaboration in Haas history was when he joined forces with Paul Newman to create Newman/Haas Racing in 1983. Though Haas and Newman were fierce competitors in the Can-Am era, they shared a goal of rising to the top of the IndyCar leaderboard. The driving force pushing the team to victory was none other than Mario Andretti, a veteran of varied formats and a tireless competitor. While driving a 1984 Lola-Cosworth Ford, Andretti scored six first-place victories after six pole positions and went on to win the CART PPG Indy Car World Series.

Mario was not to be the only Andretti to drive for Newman/Haas Racing. In 1991, in Michael Andretti’s second year with the team, he won the Indy Car World Series. Known for giving the second generation of many noteworthy drivers their first shot at racing on a grand stage, Newman/Haas Racing also was the first to field Emerson Fittipaldi’s nephew Christian, as well as Bobby Rahal’s son Graham.

The success continued in 1993, when Haas managed a miracle, signing Nigel Mansell away from F1 after his winning season with Williams. After winning five races outright, Mansell took home the PPG Indy Car World Series trophy after the penultimate race, becoming the only person in history to have won back-to-back championships in the same year in F1 and Indy car.

Haas’ skill as a talent scout did not stop there. Nine years later, after seven races and seven pole positions, upstart racer Cristiano da Matta became the 2002 Indy Car world champion. One year later, the most-awarded driver in Champ Car history, Sébastien Bourdais, started his ascendency for the Newman/Haas team. The result was historic, with Bourdais taking home the championship four years in a row, from 2004 to 2007. The Champ Car format itself folded the following year, meaning Bourdais’ record will never be broken.

The house that Haas built still stands strong today. Having been described as the largest importer of race components on the American continent, Carl Haas forever altered the fabric of competitive driving in this country. With his keen eye for on-track ability matching his taste in fine art, Haas led a life that any enthusiast would aspire to. Now, the artifacts of Haas’ success are offered to the public for the first time. These race-proven chassis still tell a full story, one of dedication from every member of the Newman/Haas team and an undeniable pattern of victory; a foundation built on winning that will remain legendary forever. Long live the house that Haas built.

Sotheby’s sealed – one-off nardo f40 "competizione"

https://rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/s...izione/1283456

Ferrari were ahead of the gray paint exotic car trend 3 decades before

Looks like a slight variant of a F40LM. To me the F40 was the pinnacle of Ferrari's best road car engineering under Enzo.

RM Private Sales is thrilled to offer a breathtaking Grigio Nardo Ferrari F40 “Competizione” alongside this year’s Monterey auction. Built into one of the most powerful “Competizione” spec F40s ever created by specialized racing teams in Holland and the UK, this F40 “Competizione” was one of the few to take to the track in period racing competition. Raced regularly throughout the 1990s, it has recently completed an eye-popping cosmetic restoration to its current livery of triple-layer Grigio Nardo with specially painted shields and electric blue cloth interior by the famous Zanasi Group in Maranello, the official paint shop for all Ferrari supercars, Tailor-Made, and Icona editions. Possibly the fastest F40 ever constructed with final horsepower output available between 700 and near 1,000 hp based on setup, this is a one-of-a-kind F40 that would provide a truly mesmerizing driving experience.

1998 McLaren F1

https://rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/m...ren-f1/1279138

I never knew McLaren revised the headlight design on the very last F1. I've seen two F1's in person (both at Amelia Concurs), one was a LeMans race car and the other a LM.

Chassis number 059 is the only F1 to leave the factory with a unique headlight setup, making it a true one-off within the 64 road cars constructed and instantly recognizable to those in the know. McLaren would later improve headlight output in existing F1s by swapping the position of the low and high beam lamps, as well as replacing the low beam lamp with a different projector, all of which could be done within the original headlight housing, cementing this car’s status as unique amongst its peers.
Truly amazing engineering on F1. Agree with this statement.

Many argue that McLaren’s F1 is the greatest car of the 20th century, a bold claim but a justifiable one considering this car’s impact on the industry and its success in motorsport.

IIRC, both the F40 & the Mac are under a sealed-bidding w/ RM. I think the top bidders are only notified they've been outbid, but not the current bid amount.

Michael Schumacher's championship-challenging car from 1998, the Ferrari F300, has sold at auction for $6,220,000.

CHASSIS 187 SINCE 1998
The Scuderia retained chassis 187 until September 1999, when it was sold directly, and privately, to the previous owner (along with a small package of spares) in the same race-used condition in which it remains today. In their 23 years of custodianship, chassis 187 has been treated as a closely held and entirely preserved specimen of Formula One history. It has remained shielded from the public during this time, has never been restored or altered from its as-raced condition, and is now publicly offered for sale (and viewing) for the first time in its history.

Eminently rare and forever tied to one of racing’s all-time greatest legends, the extraordinary Michael Schumacher, 187 is without a doubt one of the most significant Ferrari F1 cars extant, being the only undefeated chassis to run at least three races. It offers long-term appreciation as the immediate antecedent of one of Formula One racing’s greatest championship runs, and it can also be enjoyed firsthand as a breathtaking demonstration of the amazing technical specifications and unbridled power of a genuine late-1990s Ferrari F1 car.

The Big Mac sold this weekend, but apparently, RM will not be posting the sale result publicly or privately. Looks only they, the seller, & the new owner will know unless someone close leaks it.

If you had to guess, how much do you think it went for? I'm guessing $30m.

~$15M, it's the last F1 but not a LM so that's my guess

Chassis #018 sold for $20m a few years ago & that was 1 of 2 w/ a LM-spec engine & HDF kit. This car had some unique features as well with the HDF kit, so I would wager $20-25m.

Hearing the F40 did not sell. Car was reportedly asking for $3m+ & people in the Ferrari community thought that was outrageous for a completely non-original example.
