$45K for a used (potentially new) performance sedan...what would you look at?

Burning Brakes
The Genesis may not have the best looking wheels in the segment, but it's by far not the worst.
Since I've had pleasure of driving a 2011 version, I'll give some pros and cons on my driving experience that really stood out:
Pros:
1. Roomy back seat
2. Ultra soft leather seats all-around
3. Adaptive HID healights
4. Electronic braking and brake hold feature
5. B-pillar air vents in addition to the rear center floor vents
6. Lighted door sills and the door lights facing downward to the ground
7. Navigation direction gives a pinging sound for when you are suppose to turn
(There are times when driving my TL that I am completely oblivious to my turn
because I'm not listening to the Navi. The ping is like a little reminder that
says "hey, turn here." I thought it was subtle but unique.)
8. The cooled driver's seat.
(Really felt good in the Florida heat)
9. 6-speed rear wheel v8 transmission combo. (Felt powerful and stable. 1st gear is really just to move the car from a standstill, but it really pulled in 2nd to 3rd gears.
)
10. Wood steering wheel felt good and wasn't cluttered
11. The Adaptive cruise control worked really well. (I tried it as if I wasn't paying attention to the vehicle in front of me. The car literally came to a complete stop. I know some cars do this, but it was still pretty cool.)
12. Leather on the dash is a nice touch
13. The lane change switch blink 3 times if I just tap it. I didn't have to hold it down for the duration of the lane change.
I could go on and on...but let me leave the few CONS that I obsesrved:
1. The glare on the navigation screen in direct sunlight was kind of annoying. (The screen is still visible, I just think that it needed a dash extension over it, like the 4th gen TL has.
2. The shift gate manual was on the passenger side. (I generally like the + - on the driver's side, no matter what the car. So this is a general setback. Function-wise it worked great.)
These cons, in no way, changed my opinon of how awesome this car is. No car is perfect, but Hyundai did a wonderful job with the Genesis. I love the direction they are headed. It reminds me of Acura back in 03-06, when they were leading the pack and blazing a trail.
Indeed, the Genesis is a sweet ride. I can only imagine that the 2012's added to this elegant sedan.

I have only one problem with this; the OP mentioned fun-to-drive as priority.
FORGET BMW. I said many times in past threads that 3-series was the best in class, but for other classes *look elsewhere*.
Genesis is more of a boulevarder than something that inspires genuine fun-to-drive. More Avalon-esque than Infiniti M let's say. But if fun is a main priority, look Euro.

Same goes for the E Class which was never a sports sedan (unless one is willing to pay for AMG's reworking).
There are a no. of Genesis owners that also own a W212 E Class or an F10 5 Series - and they all have their strengths and weakenesses.
For instance, one owner of the F10 and Genesis states that the 4.6 Tau has a smoother/creamier power delivery than the N55 DI twin scroll turbo powerplant in his F10.
Also, helps that the Genesis doesn't have the throttle issue that has been an issue with the F10.
Now, that's certainly to say that the Genesis doesn't have it's own issues as well; one thing they all note, however, is that they all agree that their German car isn't worth $20K over their Genesis.
As for "sport", we'll just have to wait and see what Hyundai has done for the R-Spec.

I think it boils down to the R-Spec Genesis or the 2012 Advance SHAwD TL. You'll definitely be happy with either one AND reliability will NOT be an issue.

Great choice! I've been in love with the Genesis sedan since it came out. Can't wait for you to actually get it 
Only thing that turns me off is the steering wheel....maybe it looks different in person but it just seems so bloated and belongs on a Buick Lesabre

Steering wheel design reminds of something put of a minivan. I really like the interior other than that. I hope they give it a sportier one for the R.

It's true that the Genesis sedan is more of a cruiser with a "bit of sport" than a true sports sedan, but then again, with what BMW had done with the F10 5 Series, the 5er is no longer a sports sedan either.

The Genesis is a great looking sedan. Every time I see one on the road, I always have to look at it and admire. What a classic and elegant styling sedan. If I have the money, I wouldn't mind picking up one.

The Genesis R-Spec looks good too. And it also got some sporty stuff added to it. I wonder how good the handling is. For the TL, at the very least, you know that it would keep up with a new S4 on a track. So if you are looking for performance, you can't really go wrong with that.

A friend's dad just picked up one of these (r spec.) in black. It was amazing, much more than I suspected. The Genesis (both coupe and sedan) have really boosted Hyundai up. Can't wait to see pics

Although they are probably not related in almost everything.
Just saying that you think hyundai doesnt know how to make sporty cars, when they do have the genesis coupe out there. And supposedly its pretty fun to drive. I drove one. After driving the 2.0T I would think i would get the 3.8 since it didnt seem so fast in a straight line but otherwise it was a blast to drive.

Actually it proves more what I am saying. The Genesis Coupe is just an ok sporty car, not really an athlete like a 335i coupe. Of course, there is the price issue. When fun-to-drive is really a priority (unlike the OP), most people will choose an used 335i coupe over a brand new Genesis Coupe 3.8.

at comparing the Genesis to the 335. People shopping for a 335 want a sporty luxury car. People shopping for a Genesis want a sports car, but the luxury is an added bonus. That's my take on it. 
Why don't we start comparing the Accord to the 5 series. They're both family cars after all.
And I don't agree that most people would choose a used 335 over it. You continue to fail to realize that no matter how good that car may be new, many stay away from used bimmers due to maintenance costs when they are past warranty. Same applies to Audi and Merc. If anything, the reason why people HAVE been going to Hyundai is because of their longer warranties compared to other manufacturers and because they are offering the cars that many of their competitors have yet to produce. Honda, Acura, Toyota, none of them have a sporty coupe that can be cross shopped against the Genesis.

Oh and way to only mention a 335. Sure it does have a great driving experience, but a used CLK, or a used S5 is nothing to scoff at either. Your posts only further push your BMW fanboy status.

Just my 0.02$ but I would stay very, very far away from kia/hyundai due to poor craftsmenship. Yeah they come loaded and actually do a good job copying the nicer cars on the road.
The kia I owned was loaded, then I had to replace an alternator at 48k miles, sliding door motor at 49,500 miles and replaced a few other items that crapped out before I took a tremendous upside down to trade it off.
4 years later and I am finally rightside on the vehicle I traded it for.
The interior panels that were removed for fixing the problem resulted in every tab that was the actual panel broke off. 7 out of 9 broke. not the removable piece but the actually tab molded into panel.
I was furious.
Summary: Hyundai - Kia = stay far away.
