anyways, sorry to change the subject... yesterday, my wife and I decided to take a walk into Downtown (Vancouver), while I have the Lowepro Flipside backpack (access to the main area ONLY when the backpack is taken off), it's too big for walk-around, so decided to use my Sling backpack instead... I was in the heart of DT around sunset, a lot of people walking around I was taking street shots... Anyways, we decided to grab something to eat, and low and behold, my zipper was half unzipped, I honestly think someone was trying to get into my bag

Why can't ether be one perfect body?
So I'm not super big into portraiture but after seeing some of this guys work/lighting I would really like to start. The lighting and halo's in the models eyes really makes the portrait pop imo.

I also contacted him in regards to what he was using for lighting and he gave me a link
I couldn't find this on the American Amazon site. Have any of you guys heard of this brand? or have you used anything similar? I'm thinking about buying it but I know Uk has different style outlets so I would have to get a converter which I guess isn't a big deal.

those photos look nice too. maybe I've just seen bad examples
Been reading a bit more here and there about Kelby's switch to Canon. And it doesn't really seem like he did it because of money. If you watch that video, he talks about how Canon came to him and only wanted him to MENTION their products on his shows, because at the time he would never even mention them as options. Furthermore, he had access to the best equipment Nikon had to offer already - being a pro sports shooter he had the best Nikon bodies and zooms out there. So it's not like Canon could have just given him their bodies and zooms and he would have just dropped everything and ran there because it had filled some void in his life. Also, think about personal preferences and the degree to which we go crazy about this stuff. Do you really think someone at his level would just switch camera systems, on a whim, because the company kinda pushed him on, if he didn't actually LIKE using the equipment?
There basically exactly the same I just don't know what brand to go with....

Amazon.com: Ardinbir Photography Studio 500W 5400K Fluorescent Ring Lamp Light with Flexible Arm for Studio Lighting, Video taking or Portrait: Camera & Photo

While the link worked for me, the pics didn't load very well (damn work firewall bs), so I just googled Vintage Camera Ads
http://www.vintageadbrowser.com/photography-ads
I like Canon's "Wildlife as Canon sees it" ad. Pretty cool way to sell cameras and lenses.
I think my parents still have a mid-80s vintage Canon EOS. May ask them to bring it with them when they come for my sons birthday in a few weeks. Mostly for shits and giggles.

Am I the only one?
I stopped receiving the free print edition of Rangefinder magazine. I get the digital edition emailed to me, but I liked the print edition. Guess I can't really complain since I was not paying for it, but now I never read it...
It used to be toilette reading material, but I don't bring electronics in there, so now I never read it...

So my question to you guys is this: Is taking video then extracting a single frame, and using it as an image for xxx purpose, photography? Or is it video editing or video extraction, if you will?
David - since you live and operate in both worlds - video and photo - what do you think?
I love the act of composing a shot and "clicking" the shutter. I can't imagine getting any satisfaction from taking a video then sifting through it to find just the right frame. Then again, I don't do this as a living in order to put food on the table. But the question still remains - is video frame grabbing, "photography"?

I think Canon is banking on the future being more video oriented with 4k and 8k coming along. All their improvements as of late have been with the video capability of the camera. Fix rolling shutter and Canon will have a huge advantage over it's competition.
Yeah in the video market. What would fixing this "rolling shutter" do for all of us boring still photographers?
Well, if you were aware of the 1D C's incredible ability to pull a very useable still from the video footage, then you would understand that by fixing rolling shutter you enhance this capability further. Right now the 1D C does a fantastic job pulling stills from slow moving or still subjects, but you can still tell that a frame was pulled from fast moving footage or where the camera was panning. I could easily see a future where the elimination of rolling shutter creates a photography where stills are no longer captured click by click, but merely pulled from video footage. It's already being done.

It's the reason I sold my Canon gear years ago for Nikon. A reason many like Seth Resnick have gone back to Nikon. Canon has become video focused.
Yeah, there grabbing for something, their asses..., j/k. I don't like that they can grab an image from a video. Just means they are spraying and praying, but that's them.

Rolling shutter has NOTHING to do with pulling a still from the footage.
Rolling shutter is an issue related to the type of sensor (CMOS) and typically found in HDDSLR cameras...but is found to a lesser extent in other CMOS motion picture cameras. It has to do with how the image is recorded and during fast camera moves (quick pans, fast dolly moves, etc) or fast moving objects in front of the lens (helicopter blades) can create a distortion in the image.
Most people don't see it...hell even I don't pay attention that much...but the current generation of cameras has done a pretty damn good job suppressing it.
There is a format called CinemaRAW DNG that some cameras use...that provide all the RAW data as a series of stills (24 stills per sec = a buttload of fucking stills)
Anyway, the ability to pull a clean still has to do with the shutter angle. Standard motion picture uses a 180 degree (about 1/40-50) in the still world. This is going to allow for many of those frames to have some kind of motion blur on them.
To constantly pull clean stills you would need to shoot video at a much smaller angle or faster shutter. But renders the look of the video much different than you stand movie for the most part, and is used specific applications (high speed action, etc...the opening beach scene in Saving Pvt Ryan or the opening battle scene in Gladiator are examples of 90 degree shutters, where you start seeing clear pieces of a dirt flying across the screen in stead of dirt with motion blur)
There are reasons to pull stills from videos...but I would NEVER do it and call it photography.

Just to be clear to everyone. i am not comparing the cameras. I'm mainly just saying for me to switch over it doesn't make sense for me.
