iphoto update today allows for support of 36.5MP....says support of full rez files via itunes file sharing.

Somehow I still doubt that means it will accept RAW. annoying to say the least. I want RAW support and the ability to upload via the camera connection kit. sigh.

Dx0mark is clearly flawed - its DR rating for 1Ds Mark III is 12.0 and 5D Mark III is 11.7 - I can tell you this, the 5D3 BLOWS AWAY the 1Ds3 in DR. So I have NO IDEA what that number means or where it is coming from, at Dx0mark site.

So if you have no idea what the numbers mean or how they get them, how do you know they are flawed???

Well...it states the 1Ds III has marginally better DR shooting landscapes. Where the 5D III has better low-iso performance in regards to sports.

Both have the same color depth.

Not really sure what youre griping about. But it seems fairly accurate to me.

having used both cameras (owning both cameras, in fact), I can tell you right now, there is no comparison, the range on the 5D3 is much much greater and it also has far greater color depth. this is not a gripe, this is real world analysis.

Landscape Score (based on Dynamic Range)
The Landscape Score is defined as the maximum Dynamic Range of the camera sensor and its unit is an exposure value (EV).
A value of 12 EV is excellent with differences below 0.5 EV usually not noticeable.
This score is named "Landscape" as contrasts are typically very high in landscape photography and it's therefore critical to have wide dyanamic range for such use.
Sports & Wildlife (use case)
Sports & Wildlife photography typically involves shooting moving people or animals at a distance, and generally requires fast (at least f/4) and long or very long telephoto lenses (at least 120 mm).Read more about Lens Use Cases and Sensor Use Cases definitions.
Portrait Score
The Portrait Score is defined as the color depth performance and its unit is a number of bits.
A color depth of 22bits is excellent, differences below 1 bit are barely noticeable.
This score is named "Portrait" because generally what matters most when shooting portraits is to aim for the richest color rendition.
Both cameras have 24 bit color depth

And while the 5D III has a great ISO performance especially reaching up into the higher number. It doesn't necessarily mean the the 1Ds III can't be that teensy bit better at say ISO400 at a F8. It is running slightly less MPX and has a different pixel pitch.

Go through the charts comparing the two.

The 1Ds III has a hair greater DR....but has sharper fall off. It all depends on what settings your shooting vs the other camera.

Actually all 4 charts, how they compare and what they show when you run the mouse over the right side of the range....its shows a lot of info.

It also tells us the 5D III has more overall range and is more flexible. But there is a sweet spot for the 1Ds III....and its in that sweet spot where it does in fact have a bit more DR than the 5D III. The 5D III also has better tonal depth.

Its kinda like you have to be shooting in exact conditions and setting to know the D800E really is sharper than the D800. And its a very set and small area of parameters where it really shows.

in other words, in real world shooting, you are pretty much never going to have those same conditions and situations where those comparisons come to light.

It depends on what kind of shooter you are. If you are a landscape shooter, you just might.

Regardless, its seems to be a pretty fair and unbiased test/comparison they put all the cameras through. And the results seem sound and accurate...but you really have to look at the charts and know what youre reading to have an odea what they are saying.

If you are just looking at the numbers and yelling foul, you're not being fair.

Actually re-readin the chart...ISO sensitivity.

The 1Ds III is just BARELY less than that of the 5D III....and I mean BARELY. but it stops at 3200 (where the 1Ds III stops) So of course the 5D III ranks better as its goes higher.

The 1Ds III's sweet spot is between ISO 50 and 200 for DR and color.

and the same can be said for just looking at the numbers and arriving at ANY conclusions thereof

completely false, in the real world.

I took the 1ds3 to the club last weekend and shot it at ISO 3200 - it performed great.

btw this is not the first time I've studied the validity of dx0mark site.... it goes back to 2008..

when the D300 came out it was way ahead of the original 5D, in terms of SOOC performance and also ISO performance. have a look below.

I shot both and can tell you that I'd have to tweak the hell out of a 5D image to get it to look as good as an image coming out of the D300.

you're showing me the comparison but not the charts. So I cant really gather any useable info from that.

I seriously think you are missing the point.

The sweet spot for the 1Ds III is in the ISO 50 -200 range. That means in the comparison to the 5D III, thats where it out performs in DR and color. In that limited area.

It doesn't mean the camera doesnt perform at 3200 :sigh:

wait I misread what you said about 1ds3 vs 5d3 - yes the noise is about the same at ISO 3200.

ok. forget the 3200 thing. I will be back Re: ISO 50-200. I think I already have examples of that I can show you, from last week.

Yeah...All the tests I did...it will import and open the NEF....but you arent dealing with a full rez file...apple shrinks it and makes its a jpg that you deal with...the NEF file is hidden somewhere and if you save any changes you lose the NEF.

Canon Reportedly Field Testing a 46MP DSLR, Possibly the 3D

Michael Zhang · Sep 23, 2012

The frenzy of Photokina 2012 is coming to an end, but that doesn’t mean crazy camera rumors are going anywhere. A big one currently floating around is that Canon is working on a DSLR with a massive number of megapixels. Northlight Images writes that we may see a preview of the camera at PhotoPlus 2012 in New York, which starts October 24.

We’re told to expect to see a ‘preview’ of a ‘high MP EOS DSLR’ at the upcoming PhotoPlus show in New York (Oct 24-27). Although the current official line is that 20ish MP is a ‘sweet spot’ for DSLRs, D800 specs, price and performance is considered ‘worrying’ in some market areas.

Nikon’s D800 has a highly-acclaimed 36.3MP sensor. Here are the specs that Canon will reportedly respond with: 46.1 megapixels, 5fps continuous shooting, 16-bit RAW images, and an ISO range of 100 to 12800.

Canon Rumors heard something similar, and writes that prototype versions of the high resolution camera(s) are already floating around in the wild:

I’m told it’s possible we’ll see an “in development” announcement sometime in 2012 for a large megapixel DSLR from Canon. I have heard both 39mp and 46mp prototype(s) are out in the field.
