Any time I shoot stars I always use my Rokinon 14mm F/2.8 its a cheap solid lens and gives the Canon 14mm F/2.8 a run for its money the Rokinon I think is right about $400 and canon's is $2k.
so first off you will want to set your lens to manual mode put it all the way to infinity then just back it off a little You also need to shoot at 2.8 or faster to get the stars to look like little pins anything higher then 2.8 and the stars will look like blobs lol. Shutter speed I always shoot 20 sec anything higher then 20 sec and you will start getting star trails . ISO I prefer to shoot at 6400 but depending on your camera maybe go with 3200 I have the 5D3 so I can push the iso pretty high without issue. In regards to the milky way you need to pay attention to the moon cycles on or within a week of new moon and you should be good. If there is to much moon light it will blow out your shot and you wont get the detail of the milky way. Also summer solstice is going to be your best bet for seeing the milky way since it is most visible to the Northern hemisphere at that time. You also need to wait about an hour hour and half after sunset for it to be completely dark and obviously get as far away from city lights as possible. If you have any issues finding the milky way Star walk is a good app to help you out.
In regards to processing it can be a little tricky I primarily rely on the curves adjustment in PS I'll open one of those layers and plot a point towards the top of the line that's going thru the histogram and one towards the bottom and then just kind of adjust those 2 until it looks right.

Regarding the Milky Way, when you are taking the shot, are you able to see the Milky Way with the naked eye as you stand there? Obviously the 20 second exposure enhances it, but are you able to see it at all with the naked eye?

Milky Way by mizouse, on Flickr
and Matt is right about summer solstice being the best time to photograph the milkyway.
I went up to Haleakala crater in Maui to take picture of the milky way. definitely not as visible as the pic i posted above which was taken in august vs the one in november below.

Composition is weak but this is a photo I thought I would share rather than delete. I like the contrast of the shade and harsh sunlight coming in.

For you sir, I would have room. When we bought our place in 2012 (for dirt) we weren't planning on buying 4100sf with 5bed/5.5bth but that's what happened. It is one cozy place when you consider the specs though. We live mostly on the main level (kids beds up) with scalability.
