The Honda e comes with Honda Sensing along with a few extra features.

Collision Mitigation Throttle Control

Preventing a sudden acceleration following cars in traffic, the Honda e will know if the car in front has suddenly stopped. For example, at a roundabout where the driver in front may change their mind and apply the brake.

Low Speed Brake Function

If you're close to an object that you may not have noticed, the Honda e will apply emergency braking while driving at low speed.

Lead Car Departure Notification System

Alerts you when driver in front has moved ahead from standstill. The Honda e will let you know that way ahead is clear.

it clearly says it detecting traffic lights and can display it. and it can apply brakes on objects. clearly they implemented software for reacting to ground objects but havent done the reaction to traffic lights. this from honda UK website. so clearly they have confidence in exporting it to right hand drive vehicles with different signs than Japan. i

No it doesn't say traffic lights. It specifically says signs, and it specifically says that "TSR does not include any braking or speed control functions".


Watch it detect a traffic sign but not detect the traffic LIGHT in their promo videos.

It sees a speed limit and then displays it on the dash for you. It can't slow down or brake when it sees a speed limit sign. It can't detect stop lights and it can't stop at stop lights. STFU

Too bad Honda's can't get free over the air updates to fix this problem. He'll have to spend tens of thousands of dollars on a buy a brand new Honda if he ever wants that fixed.

Honda always have dealer network. where tire rotation more important than some update to vehicle that has no practical relevance as no one trust the computer systems. honda is leased half the price with twice the range and honda accord is really cheap in insurance. Tesla is not there where it can really make money even with higher priced vehicles.

Honda has already implemented intelligent cruise control that can detect sudden lane changes by other vehicles and it has already implemented breaking against small projects on the ground. it can read the traffic signs and display it on the head up display. it is introducing Level 3 automation in year 2020. it is not some super duper technology. Honda is going to implement in the cars less than half price of Tesla. LMAO if it doesn't detect traffic lights then it's not level 3 because you can't use it on city streets. That's highway only, Tesla has had that for years now. Can it pass vehicles that are going slow? Does it know the difference between solid lines and dotted lines, Tesla's can and do. You seem to think all they need to do is be able to read a traffic sign and then it can just magically handle everything else LOL

It can detect traffic signs for display purposes only. Great, welcome to 2015, but it can't perform actions based on that detection. Why? Probably because it knows it's not accurate enough to risk people's lives with it. Look at the video I posted where the honda system detects a 110kmh speed limit sign as 10kmh. If it's for display purposes only being 98% accurate is not that big of a deal but if it wrongly detects a sign that badly it could be very dangerous. And since there's no easy way to update the system it can't improve over time.

The stolen autopilot source code is ancient from 2014 or 2016 maybe. Tesla replaced most of their autopilot staff and rewrote their autopilot code last year to greatly improve the 3D labeling. That guy stole AP 1.0 or maybe 2.0 code, the system is much better now, and that company doesn't have access to Tesla's 22.5 billion real world miles.


You continue to imply that since they can detect traffic signs that they can do it reliably enough 99.9999% accurate with no need for updates or improvements (even though Honda says it doesn't work well in the rain and snow) and that drivers can let Honda's drive for them. And you continue to provide no video proof of your claim. That's because it doesn't exist.

There's a big difference between detecting traffic signs and using it for informational purposes and having a system reliable and accurate enough that it's better than human drivers, and reliable enough to put in control of human lives. No car company can release a self driving system that isn't capable of OTA updates, improvements will need to be made. Constant trips to the stealership and leaving your car there all day or for days on end isn't practical but those are the illogical steps you're willing to make, sad.

they can make the greatest hardware ever, but without the best software and all the data to train the AI with, they lose. AI is not born superior to human minds, it must start knowing nothing and be fed data to learn, the more data it has the more it can learn, predict, and react. Tesla has 1000x more real world miles data than their next competitor. There is no shortcut to getting billions of miles of real world data, simulated isn’t good enough on its own.

Legacy auto companies will have to install autopilot hardware in all vehicles to capture data for years in order to acquire as much data as Tesla has now, and then use that data to train amazing software something that legacy auto companies have always struggled with. Good luck.

the more data you have the more crazy edge cases your AI can learn from and improve its reliability. It’s called the March of nines. Getting to 99% accurate isn’t that hard but 99% isn’t good enough. Getting to be 99.9999...% accurate takes an astonishing amount of real world data, data that Tesla is gathering at an exponential rate, data that they have 1000x more than anyone else

it depends if you want to live in past or Present/future. you cannot make such top class complex hardware on scale that no one replicate without a software. These East Asia are very organized societies with tremendous data in every aspect of life. they have created tremendous wealth with world class infrastructure.
Tesla expensive corporate structure and its complete lack of indigenous talent will not allow it move ahead. Every step it needs imports both in talent and components.

you are assuming GM\ Ford who has much more engineering talent than Tesla some how are badly managed and cannot see global competition towards EV vehicles. There is hint in it.

Real world driving miles are better than simulated driving miles at seeing real world edge use cases.

I’m posting real actual self driving videos, you’re posting press releases. I’m posting something that’s real and tangible right now, you’re posting intangible press releases about something that might happen 5 years from now. Where’s the fucking videos of cars available today that can stop automatically stop at traffic lights and stop signs like any current Tesla can?

Good video on Tesla AI, at around 8:30 he starts talking about stops signs, and all the varieties of them. Varieties that Honda's TSR doesn't understand and wouldn't stop properly for, which is why it doesn't do it

human held stop sign that only applies when lifted



stop sign with lights that make it easier for humans to see but harder for cameras


stop sign in area with lots of foot traffic occluded by tree


barely visible stop sign on school bus


stops signs with modifiers, stop unless you're making a right turn


stop: everyone take turns


stop: right turn keep moving


stop sign on gate that only applies when the gate is closed


stop sign on gate arm that only applies when the arm is down


stop sign for left turns only




this is the shit you see in the real world and is difficult to simulate, the more real world data you have the better you can train your AI to detect it and handle it accurately



Honda's TSR cannot handle these which is why it doesn't stop

This sounds like the same talking points people used with the iPhone came out. How Nokia, BlackBerry, and Microsoft were the leaders and were going to crush them, Apple had no advantage, etc. Where are those companies now in mobile marketshare?

I've already debunked your GM/Ford engineering talking point. They have engineers that make ICE vehicles, those engine skills don't translate into EV skills. Engineers want to work for Tesla, not Ford, they want to do something cool and meaningful, not make the next Ford Escort.

Used to teach/train and refine the weighting factors of your neural network.

At the 1:54:20 mark Karpathy starts talking about image recognition and how to train AI that can only see pixels to learn what the photo shows. That's how google photo search works, if it can only see pixels how can it tell the difference between pics of a boat, iguana, scissors, or a cello, how can it identify the object in each picture. He explains how.

I cannot control laughter when I see your response. Those companies were replaced by Foxconn, TSMC, Samsung, LG, Toshiba, Hynix, Sony, Murate, TDK.

When things get complex than very specialized engineering firms can supply.

Apple was better in marketing , design (Hollywood, Disney-Pixar) due to its location in CA.

GM/Ford engineers can easily integrate third party batteries into platforms and made it far cheaper due already factories in cheaper location. They can also hire boat load of software

Tesla surprises Wall Street with first-quarter profit, stock rallies 9%

Tesla Inc. posted a surprise profit in the first quarter, the first to reflect the economic destruction wrought by the coronavirus pandemic, boosting shares in the extended session.

Tesla (TSLA) late Wednesday said it earned $16 million, or 9 cents a share, in the quarter, versus a GAAP loss of $4.10 a share in the year-ago period.

Adjusted for one-time items, the company said it earned $227 million, or $1.24 a share, contrasting with an adjusted loss of $2.90 a year ago.

Sales rose to $5.99 billion from $4.54 billion a year ago. The stock rose more than 9% following the report.

Analysts polled by FactSet had expected the electric-car maker to report an adjusted loss of 28 cents a share on sales of $6.1 billion.

First-quarter 2020 “was the first time in our history that we achieved a positive GAAP net income in the seasonally weak first quarter. Despite global operational challenges, we were able to achieve our best first quarter for both production and deliveries,” Tesla said in its letter to investors.


The results were “quite impressive, given the difficulties incurred towards the end of the quarter with COVID-19 issues,” Argus Research analyst Bill Selesky said.

“Going forward, the most challenging quarter of the year will be the second quarter, given the dislocation caused by the coronavirus,” he said. “My biggest worry is that demand for Tesla’s vehicles may take a pause,” as people grapple with unemployment concerns and less discretionary income and put off buying an electric car.

“As gasoline prices remain weak, consumers may just want to keep driving what they have (and repair what they have) until the economic climate comes back to a better place,” Selesky said.



First-quarter profit may have been small but that Tesla “managed to be profitable for a third quarter in a row is an impressive feat, especially given the challenges of the coronavirus crisis and the company’s expansion of its product lineup,” Edmunds analyst Jessica Caldwell said.

“(Chief Executive) Elon Musk is leaning heavily on the Model Y to carve the company’s path forward so it’s an encouraging sign that the vehicle’s launch is not only going much better than expected, but it’s been a process free of the major drama surrounding its Model 3 predecessor,” she said.

In the letter to investors, Tesla said its gross margins remained strong, with the Model Y, the compact SUV that is next on Tesla’s lineup, already profitable. The 24-page letter did not mention the pandemic at all — it referred to the coronavirus only tangentially, using words such as “challenges” and “uncertainty.”



Perhaps more crucially, Tesla said it is capable of selling more than half a million vehicles in 2020 “despite announced production interruptions.”

For its U.S. factories, which remain shuttered, “it remains uncertain how quickly we and our suppliers will be able to ramp production after resuming operations. We are coordinating closely with each supplier and associated government,” the company said.

Tesla also reiterated it had enough liquidity, although it added that a near-term cash flow guidance was on hold. Earnings guidance is also not possible at the moment, but Tesla said it “will achieve industry leading operating margins and profitability with capacity expansion and localization plans underway.”


Going into the report, Tesla shares had seen spikes, including a 10% rally on Monday and 10 straight sessions of gains recently.

Wall Street seemed focused on hopes that the car maker would be able to weather the coronavirus challenges better than peers, and that it had given itself a crucial liquidity cushion with its $2.3 billion capital raise in February.


Investors had also zeroed in on Tesla’s still-healthy first-quarter vehicle deliveries announced earlier this month, alongside news that production of the Model Y started in January and that the first few vehicles were delivered ahead of schedule, which Tesla reiterated on Wednesday.

Elon made a good comparison between their real world mileage lead and Google search. Every time you search for something on google and click a link you train Google's AI, and it gets better over time because the users are providing real feedback as to what the best result is, and overtime the best result becomes the first result. If I search Google for "HP OfficeJet Pro 8610 driver download" the first result (after the ads) is usually the support page for that HP printer and the 2nd result is a more direct driver download page. If enough people click the 2nd link it will eventually become the 1st link. With the latest update to FSD that enables stopping at traffic lights and stop signs they are having the drivers confirm every time FSD drives through a green light, or accelerates after stopping at a stop sign. The users are providing real human verification that the FSD's AI is correct the light is green and the intersection is clear and it is safe to proceed. Every time they do this all over the country in a variety of conditions the AI gets smarter. Then after a while Tesla will release an update that removes the confirmation and then FSD will continue through green lights without human confirmation that the light is green.

The FSD feature improvement will be making turns at intersections which should show up in the next couple months, those like stopping at lights, and before that lane changes will initially require human confirmation but will become seamless after that.

I have talked with several people who work/worked for Tesla at various levels and many of them really do not like it there. The positives they mention were Elon's vision and his genius, but pay, workplace culture and balance were never one of them.

A few years back I was given a business card of someone in Tesla's HR... from my Uber driver didn't even have a serious discussion about work or anything, just your typical obligatory ridesharing conversation.

You won't hear me defending Ford either though.

Model Y comes with the chrome delete look that a lot of people are doing to the 3. I bet that looks good with those Induction wheels

Yes, Tesla didn't invent the perception of environment. They just created an AI based on that concept and fed it billions of real world miles, and used humans to train the AI when it makes mistakes and over time it gets better and better. Just because Honda created robots that can play a crappy game of soccer in a brightly lit smooth, clean floor with clear markings doesn't mean Honda's cars can recognize stop lights and stop at them

Silicon Valley is the epicenter of AI/Machine learning/Deep learning, and one of the best achievements of this technology will be self-driving cars. So the best brains in this field are working on solving this problem, and a lot of them are working for Tesla in Silicon Valley.

Oh yeah and Tesla designed a custom processor for the sole purpose of running neural networks and image recognition. It's not a repurposed nvidia GPU it's built from the ground up run neural networks, it's 20x better than nvidia's chips at that task, and costs 20% less. No other company can do what Tesla does because their hardware isn't powerful enough. They'd have to hire one of the best chip designers in the world to build their own custom silicon from scratch like Tesla did to pull it off.

But that chip is manufactured in and imported from China, isn’t it. So now the Chinese already know what the best of Tesla offers and how to manufacture them.
In case there is a world war or other calamity, China seems well poised to survive with this cutting edge technology.
