The evolution of the 911:

Hey Surfer Rick, you see the C&D that tested the Z06, 911CS, and the GTR?
As-tested price for the Carrera S: $131,400.
I shat bricks. Yeah I know it's better than the previous 911 Turbo but damn, that's a lot of money. I guess that means a 911 Turbo is going to be $160-170k?
It doesn't feel right that a 911 Turbo should be approaching the same stratosphere as a Ferrari

Not really related: Road and Track clocked the 991 carrera S @ 3.5s for 0-60
I know porsche is typically conservative with their numbers but that's pretty damn impressive (quoted at 4.3 from Stuttgart)

I have the magazine at home, i remember doing a double take when I read 3.5s so that number stuck in my head.
I know its not 458 fast, but its pretty damn fast. Not to mention, this is only the S...
Off the top of my head, id say the quarter mile was 12 seconds or very low 12 seconds, but ill confirm once the library closes

Talked to a very business-saavy friend of mine once.... name a major company out there and he knows them, their origins, their finances, success in the stock market, etc. He's a hedge fund manager or something like that. I'm a natural skeptic but if he told me human feces was full of valuable minerals I'd bag up my own shit.
He told me that Porsche makes the most profit on any of their cars out of any manufacturer out there. I'm not at all surprised by the MSRP of the Carrera S. Lovely car, love that it has 7-speed manual and hope more cars come with them.... but jeebus.

That said, I did a price out of a Carrera S I'd want and it was "only" about $110k.

I have heard that as well. I don't think this is the original article, but still puts it into perspective and is believable...

So the Cayman S with the msrp of $70K can be sold for 44K and the dealer would still make a $2K profit?

i would like to think that porsche has high profits due to the following:
1. porsche has more add-ons than every other non-exotic mainstream automaker. so i would like to think their high profit averages are most likely bolstered by the huge consortium of check-off boxes. i.e., VW profits $900 a car...Porsche probably makes more than that every time someone checks off a $8k ceramic brake upgrade.
2. porsche is a unique enthusiast brand with minimal cross shopping. base MRSPs could soar when there is no competitor pricing.
...but i have a feeling that the VW stock plays a big role here. 2008 VW AG aggregated stock profits divided by small volume of porsches sold.

@srika: imagine we have still have the gt3...MMC...Turbo...GTS...
@cayman: new cayman should be really interesting, theres always been a fine line when it comes to improving the cayman just enough so that its shy of the 911, though with all the headway theyve made on the 911 it seems like its well within porsches power to make a cayman faster

They use innovative methods like that to help keep R&D budgets under control along with the combination of a continued evolution on a common platform such as the 911...

The sizzle in the Steak
Row your own gears?.....The end is near.
Although Porsche developed the world’s first seven-speed manual transmission for the latest 911, it seems that the stick shift might not be in company’s long-term plans for its iconic rear-engined sports car.
Michael Schätzle, project manager of the new 911, told Automobile that he believes the manual could die out within “one or two generations” of new models, putting its possible expiration date at about 2020.
Given that half of U.S. 911 buyers opt for the three pedal gearbox, a prediction of the stick’s demise might seem premature, but Schätzle has his reasons. Globally, 78 percent of last-generation 911 models left the factory with a PDK, and Schätzle claims that customers (as well as Porsche management) prefer the quicker and more fuel efficient dual-clutch unit.
Another issue is the future of the PDK. Though the current seven speed PDK and manual gearboxes share a multitude of parts, Porsche is contemplating shifting to a nine-speed PDK in the future. This would require a major redesign of the transmission that would eliminate much of its similarity to the manual. As a nine-speed manual isn’t going to happen anytime soon (sorry, semi fans), this development could hurt the financial case for the stick if its take rate continues to decline.
Though Schätzle was quick to point out that his prediction was just an opinion rather than an official decision, recent reports have suggested that Porsche is considering dropping the three-pedal option from the next 911 GT3. If that highly driver-focused machine loses its stick, it’s reasonable to fear that the rest of the 911 lineup could eventually follow suit.

Man the interior is so nice on the 991. I love the LED lights in the cabin, the gauge lights everything, is so crisp and sharp kind of hurts your eyes @ night. The navigation screen is crystal clear too.
Can't wait until they unleash the turbo version of the 991. I mean if the Carrera is this fast, just imagine the turbo, the GT's etc.

Press release...
For its exceptionally performance-oriented customers, Porsche Exclusive now offers a new power enhancement kit developed for the 911 Carrera S. It focuses specifically on the dynamic properties of the sports car. It boosts the power of the 3.8-litre boxer engine from 400 hp (294 kW) to 430 hp (316 kW), producing even better driving performance. Thanks to this Powerkit, the 911 Carrera S Coupé only needs 4.0 seconds to sprint from zero to 100 km/h with PDK in Sport Plus mode. The kit also increases the top speed by four km/h: to 306 km/h with PDK and to 308 km/h with a seven-speed manual gearbox. However, the enhanced power has not affected fuel economy: fuel consumption values in the NEDC are unchanged despite a power increase of over seven per cent.
More power without higher fuel consumption is made possible by carefully tuned modifications and adaptations to the electronic engine management. The core elements of the Powerkit are special cylinder heads with different camshafts and an entirely new variable resonance intake system design with six air flaps and a resonance flap. An additional centre radiator keeps the higher specific power from overloading the thermal management system of the six-cylinder engine. Low exhaust back pressure is achieved by the sport exhaust system that is equipped with two sets of twin tailpipes with independent styling; this system is also included with the Powerkit. At the press of a button, the exhaust system is dethrottled, the two exhaust lines are merged and they generate a powerful engine sound. The Powerkit also includes the Sport Chrono package with dynamic engine mounts for even sportier driving properties. A visual trademark of the Powerkit is the car’s modified engine compartment styling with titanium coloured engine cover and carbon inlays.
Porsche Exclusive also offers aerodynamically tuned exterior components that offer customisation over various expansion levels. The basic component is the front apron that extends low and has powerful air intakes from the Sport Design package. This package also includes a fixed rear spoiler in legendary “ducktail” form. The top upgrade is the Aerokit Cup with an additional fixed rear wing over the rear spoiler and a special front spoiler lip with additional air intakes. Other new Porsche Exclusive products for the 911 Carrera include tinted privacy glass for the side and rear windows and the Exterior package with various components in body colour. Inside, Porsche Exclusive also offers numerous upgrades such as interior packages with decorative trim ranging from brushed aluminium to carbon.
