I love the "pro-civic" comments like: "I don't mind it" "It doesn't look that bad"

I'm sure those comments were just what Honda was looking for.

Clearly Ford and Hyundai have nothing to fear with the new Civic.

Smile 13th Str8 Year

The Honda Civic is once again Canada’s most popular new car purchase.

2010 marked the 13th consecutive year the sub-compact sedan built in Ontario topped the Canadian new car yearly sales charts.

Last year’s deliveries totalled 57,501 units, contributing to the nearly 1.6 million Honda Civics that have been sold in Canada since 1973.

“We thank the thousands of Canadians who bought Honda Civic models this past year to make it Canada’s number one car for the 13th year in a row,” said Jerry Chenkin, executive vice president of Honda Canada Inc. “We appreciate and value these new car buyers’ vote of confidence in Civic."

“With the exception of the Civic Hybrid, all Civic models sold in Canada are made here in Canada,”
added Chenkin. Of the more than 5.3 million Honda and Acura vehicles produced at the Honda of Canada Mfg. assembly plants in Alliston, Ontario over the past 24 years, more than 3 million have been Honda Civics.

An all-new 2012-model Civic (the 9th generation of the brand) will go on sale in spring 2011.

Yup, but it never used to be close. The Coralla and Mazda 3 have definitely closed the gap.

Almost as boring as the new Jetta. Then again, it's a compact family sedan; it should be.

^ though some people are better left unquoted....

and for those bashing the illustration, say what you will, but looking at this bores me to tears:

The rendition is an improvement... to each his own. The 8G Civic looks very uninspired, and while the rendition looks derivative almost, it still looks better The Civic has never been a big attention grabber anyways.

Honda and Toyota could literally slap wheels on a and Civic and Corolla will continue to sell 250K+. It will take a setback of epic proportions for them to screw this up. Not going to happen. The only 2 cars that could challenge them are the new Cruze and Focus. Even then, fat chance. The name Civic & Corolla are to the compact segment what 3 Series is to entry level luxury. Enough to carry sales on name alone if it has to.

I will say that I am quite impressed by the Elantra. Lots of bang for your buck over at the Hyundai store.

Not a big fan of the Cruze for some reason though... I much prefer the '12 Focus in domestic small cars.

That rendering looks ok. I'm sure it'll provide reliable transportation for millions, and that's all that a lot of buyers are looking for.

I thought the Civic is a bread and butter car for Honda..no? The 8th gen is already quite "futuristic" looking when compared to the super boring 7th gen. I don't think we can blame Honda for being conservative for the 9th gen as the 8th gen has been so successful....as enthusiasts, we can only hope the Si model (if there's one) will be more exciting than the regular model.

I see a lot of praises for the new Elantra. I'm guessing that's because the new model is a huge improvement over the previous gen. It sure has attractive styling and its EPA rating is pretty good too at 29/40mpg. That's slightly better than the current Civic's rating, which is 30/38. However, C/D only managed to get 26mpg in the real world in the Elantra. C/D was able to get 33mpg in the current Civic. Performance wise, the current Civic can do 0-60mph in 7.7s while the new Elantra can do the same in 8.6s. The Civic had a manual gearbox while the Elantra has one extra gear ratio.

It's ALL about sales. What good is a good looking car if nobody buys it and the company who sold it to you isn't going to be around in five years? The Civic is designed to appeal to the masses, not just to the kid who drives his moms van back and forth to work.

Thankfully, the average consumer has more common sense and realizes that design is close to the bottom of the decision factors that affect their buying decision. http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/c...tors/index.htm

Sorry, this forum is not filled with average customers. We are car enthusiasts.
Nobody really cares about sales figures.

As if ......."Wow! Look at those sales numbers for that ugly car! So impressive!...makes me want to go out and buy it!!!"

Civic can sell billions.....if it's a polished turd, who cares?

If the Civic was a beautiful design with an up to date powertrain....and sold only 2.....I'd be in love with it.

Sales numbers? Who cares?!?!

Speak for yourself. I am a car enthusiast and I care about sales figures.

Ugly is subjective. When a car is the number one selling (retail) car in its class, it can't be ugly in everyones eyes. Civic is not a polished turd. Clearly you have a different set of standards compared to the average person or even enthusiast when it comes to buying a car.

The civic is simply a reliable appliance. A conveyance that won't let you down. A proven commodity. Those qualities hold a certain value for the average person. That is why the average person buys it without giving it a second thought.

They are not an "exciting" alternative. Mazda 3 for example offers a little excitement in the class.

I only go into the "monthly car sales" threads for the talks about specific cars, who gives a damn about how much a car sells in a month, really, unless you work for one of those companies, have stock invested in them, or have a blood oath to them or something. I still think those threads are a little ridiculous, though there are some interesting reads when you sift through the filler.

Personally, when I go car shopping I never look at sales figures. Why? A big corporation's sales success has zero relevance to me... I have no idea why it keeps getting brought up in defense of the Honda/Acura lineup. You could turn it around and say the same thing for Toyota, who despite the recalls and quality issues they've encountered for the past few years, managed to be the best selling car company in all of 2010.

http://www.autoblog.com/2011/01/05/d...t-selling-car/

Does that make me want a Camry any more than I already do (not want)? Hell no.

I think (from what I see so far....which could change when we see the final product) this car is a fail on exterior design.

No need for sales figures to prove the 4G TL is a failure.

...just look at it.

Guarantee: The next 5G TL will look nothing like the 4G. Acura will not go with an evolution design based on the 4G. I think Acura is going to go with the old Lexus design language of vanilla.(even thought Lexus is running away from the vanilla....or so they say)

Depends on which generation Civic, the 7G was a appliance but the 8G is a fairly exciting car. I can understand folks not liking the interior/exterior styling of the 8G Civic but it's not conventional or average. My Mom had a 7G Civic and my brother has a 8G. There's little comparison between them, the 8G is so much better and also fun to drive and toss into turns.

Fair enough. But keep in mind - perception is reality. Civic/Corolla and Camry etc... = Appliance.

Nobody said that anybody did say the Civic is a polished turd, why are you even bringing that up?

I never said I love the design either. I guess you missed the part that I said it's almost as boring as the new Jetta.

A true enthusiast cares about sales figures because it is sales figures (among other things) that will allow their manufacturer of choice to offer more or less cars with more or less options. If Honda made a mid-engine Civic that looked like a Ferrari with an 8-speed transmission that sold only 500 units and severely damaged the company financially to the point where they would no longer be able to continue development of further products, would you be okay with that? Probably so because hey at least it looked good while trying. You want advanced powertrains but what good are those advanced powertrains going to do for you when the Civic outperforms them all in real-world tests? For bragging rights? Doing more with less is how Honda has always done it and they continue to outperform the cars that are doing less with more.

Like you said, enthusiasts care about the car, and a car is WAY more than skin deep, which seems to be your sole criteria of accepting or dismissing a car.

Well I guess most cars are appliances, no? They are for taking you to place, and holding the things you buy and etc... Its basically a tool.

True enthusiasts don't care about sales figures....otherwise this forum would be filled with Camry posts.

Sales? Who cares?

I could care less if a mfg. goes under. I'm not a brand fanboi. I'm a car enthusiast regardless of the badge or maker.

on Honda outperforming the cars that are doing less with more.....puff puff give give!

Meh, why are all of you talking about the looks of the Civic? Since when do Civic owners buy the cars to claim "Hey, look at me I drive a sexy ass Civic" Never. The Civic is more of a compact family car, which are for people with family and kids. I mean if you are married with kids, why do you even need flashy car? Who are you trying to show off to? And if you want a flashy car, why are you looking at the Civic? The Civic's job is for the average family.

I guess you have yet to look upon a car and see sex on wheels.

I guess you have yet to see a car that stirs your soul.

I guess you have yet to driven a car that blows your mind.

I guess you have yet to see a car that you can just stare at for literal hours...art sculpture on wheels.

I guess you have yet to hear the sound of an engine roar that sounds like a symphony.

I hope you one day get to experience the above.

I said, "most" cars.

I own an E92 M3.... which I think I completed your list? N/A V8, my favorite sound. BMW M3 racing history that projects an image that this car has legacy and soul.
