If I drank 9 Coronas, I'm sure all cars would look like Zondas to me.

I suppose there are cars that just aren't photogenic and look better in person (i.e. best example I have for reference are Acura's latest models like the ZDX and TL)...
But, anyhow...what I'm not getting here is what's the point of the GT with the Touring and possibly M version to follow?

It's interesting that it's categorized as a car, not SUV/CUV (see fueleconomy.gov). So submit to the same standards.
BMW should bring the wagon over - especially the 528i version. Otherwise people will just get the X5.

^ Alrighty...so, if you want to sit "higher" in the GT, what's the purpose of the X3...? Or heck, the X6...?
The GT is effectively a crossover, right? Isn't the X6 supposed to fill that segment...?

man prices just keep going up. it was only a few years ago that a mid-luxury car started at like 42-45k. Now it's 50K+ for a friggin 5series

You need to see the GT in person. The materials and build quality are fantastic. You can tell BMW spent the money on the body panel fabrication (just like the X6).
BUT ... It's a fucking hatchback ... And I like hatchbacks but I don't like people who buy a hatchback and then say it's some sort of hipsterdoofus alternative lifestyle vehicle for DINKs and women with little white dogs.

It's not bad in person. Definitely way better looking than what is in the pics.

BMW officials told us today that the EPA numbers are in for the 2011 5 Series — and they’re not too shabby. The 535i will get an EPA-certified 20/29 mpg city/highway with an automatic transmission. That’s a full 3 mpg better than the outgoing 535i, and it vaults the car to the front of its class for fuel efficiency. Not bad for a car that’s slightly larger and weighs some 100 pounds more than its predecessor.
Credit the new eight-speed automatic as well as the single-turbo Valvetronic six-cylinder, which replaces the twin-turbo six-cylinder on the last 535i yet makes the same 300 horsepower and 300 pounds-feet torque. Spokesman Matt Russell said the new 535i hits 60 mph in less than 6 seconds, which is “almost identical” with the outgoing 535i.
The 550i uses the 400-hp, twin-turbo V-8 of X6 and 750i vintage; Russell said it will reach 60 mph in about 5 seconds flat, with EPA gas mileage pegged at 17/25 mpg. That puts it 2 mpg ahead of today’s normally aspirated 550i.

Just for comparison, the base (FWD) TL gets 18/26 and makes 280hp.

Due to arrive in 2011, the Bavarian automaker's new high-performance super saloon will be powered by a downsized, 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine that was first used on the X5M and X6M.
In those two models, the V8 produces 555HP at 6,000 rpm and 680Nm or 501-lbs/ft of peak torque. However, it has been suggested that BMW's M division may further tweak the twin-turbo engine boosting output closer to the 600HP mark.

PERFECT. the M genetics translate perfectly into BMWs new direction...unlike that last gen, which now looks even further out of place int he historical line-up.
love the chrome trim detail around the CF panels. this interior (and the z4 interior) are fantastic.

Damn it, I'll be damned if my next car isn't white with a black/red interior.
Narrows it down pretty well I think
it'll be a while though.... can't tell yet!

Perhaps if you were comparing swimming the English Channel, to navigating across a high flowing freeway while cars are exploding around you, and you're in a wheelchair.

I have seen the first BMW 5 series on the road today, a 530d... what an ugly car it is.
something between the - beautiful - 7series and the - devastating ugly - 3series...

I saw the new 5 as well and that rear end is a huge letdown
The side just looks like a 3 series, and the front is somewhat decent. BMW used to be my favorite car company but man...that has changed a lot with their current line-up. =(
