DVD2NAV - Where to run the wires? (2006 TSX)

I am thinking about getting Dom's DVDtoNAV conversion kit with PnP for my 2006 TSX. I will be using it with a portable DVD player, likely just stored in the center console.

I know that tons of people have done this install, and there are 150 threads about it, but I haven't found any info as to how/where to run the wires from the trunk for the toggle switch and video from the player. I'm pretty sure I understand the connections, but I don't want wires laying all around my car.

I want the install to be semi-neat, but I also don't want to rip my car apart, since it's only 10 days old. I like the idea of putting the switch next to the VSA switch... is it tough to get the wires up there? What about the video cable from the DVD player (in center console) to the trunk-mounted box? Do you go under the seat and carpet? Around it? And where are you guys tapping into 12V for Dom's "black box?"

If anyone has pics and/or descriptions of how you did it, I would be eternally grateful.

I dont think there is any other way than taking off the backseat, and running the wires under the carpet in the rear to the trunk. You'll also more than likely have to take apart the center compartment to snake the wires into there.

I've never done it, but it seems easy enough. I'm like you though, my car is only a couple weeks old and I'm a little queasy about ripping it apart.

You can actually just tap into the video signal at the right side of passenger side foot well. Looks for a thread by CJams. He did is wiring there.

Where did you plan to put your DVD player?

With Dom's kit, you don't need to do anything up front. I don't want to rip apart the screen. I just have to get from the trunk to the center console.

Are you working from the trunk up towards the front of the car b/c of the PnP adapter? I was hesitant (too) at first to splice any wires, but even Dom will tell you that the $100 adapter is a waste of money. If you're looking for the "cleanest" install, as TSX536 said, the kick panel *really* is the easiest place to access the vid signal, and it's also the easiest place to "hide" Dom's converter IMO. You don't have to run super long lines and find places to tuck them into in order to wire your switch up. Everything's out of sight.... and there's no ripping apart of the screen, or even taking out the head unit for that matter.

Unless you've already decided what dvd player you want, let me recommend the Myron & Davis AD212 - it fits perfectly within the storage compartment above the "not an ashtray". You only need to cut out enough of the compartment on the back end to accomodate the output lines. I actually use my armrest/center storage, so I didn't want to house a dvd player there. Additionally, the AD212 still allows the storage compartment to be closed, so you have instant anti-theft protection. I purchased an additional storage compartment from someone on the site for $25... from the dealers, it'll run $30+. Restoring everything back to stock if I ever sell/trade the car is a piece of cake.

Yeah, I planned on the PnP adapter. I'm not too keen on splicing wires. I didn't know you could do it up front. I guess I'm not really sure where exactly you guys mean by the kick panel. If anyone has a pic, that would be cool. If not, I'll look around the car tomorrow.

kak... check out the post "Myron & Davis DVD Player" in the Parts and Performance section of the TSX forum. I posted a link in there to some write-ups on the install.

Thanks for the links, guys. Get ready for a barrage...

So that install is done by splicing wires underneath the kick panel? Which is right near the door hinge to the right of the passenger's right foot, correct?

Is the panel easy to remove?

Where did you put Dom's unit?

What about the switch?

How do you get wires back to the center console?

Where is the amp acc wire that you tapped into for power? In that same bundle behind the kick panel? How do you connect it to Dom's unit?

Does it matter what kind of inline power filter you use? 5AMP? 12AMP? 20AMP?

Baaaah! Sorry for all the questions. I can't handle spending the money and ripping the car apart if I don't have a plan going in. I don't really get how all these people seem to be running wires all throughout the car behind the front console and everything. I don't know the first step to getting behind there. Maybe this install isn't for me...

Yeah, its install right in the kick panel at the passenger side.

Its pretty easy. I think it is only one screw and you just pull it off.

You can put doms unit by the amp or in the kick panel.

You can put the switch anywhere you can get to within reach. I have mine by the center console.

Just run the wires under the passenger dash to the center console.

The amp wire is in the center console. Search for the diagram color chart for the color code. I kinda forgot what color the wire is. You just need the 12v constant on and the ignition wire. You can put ground just about anywhere where theres a screw screwed to the car.

I forgot what size power filter I use. But I think 12 will be fine. Maybe 20.

You just have to get in there and look at it first. See where everything is at. Then attempt to install it yourself. Just dont be scare to mess with it. Hope this helps. Any more questions, just ask. GOOD LUCK.

Ok, I give up. I'm pretty sure I'm not going to be able to do this myself. Does anyone have any idea what this would cost to have done professionally? Who should I get to do it? Or does anyone want to come to New Haven, CT and have me pay them to do it?

If I have it done professionally, will they insist on putting a kill-switch to the e-brake or something like that so I can't use it while moving?

I haven't done any. That's why I'm such an idiot about it. I've never really done any messing with my cars as far as pulling apart panels and such.

I looked around in the car yesterday and didn't even know where to start to get the kick panel off. I took off the one small panel on the passenger's side of the center front console because that was the only visible screw that I saw. I just don't think this stuff is for me. I'd rather just pay to make sure it's done right.

....
I have read several of your posts on how much of a n00b you're in this respect and how that seems to give you the jitters.
My suggestion is do yourself and your spanking new TSX a favor and have professional do it.
If you can afford the car you can afford to indulge a little and spend the $80 or so for prof. install.

----------------

also you're only like 2 hours max from Dom's shop.
It I were you I'd pick a good day to drive down there and let'em do it.

You think that's what it'll cost to install? Dang, I never would have asked so many questions. I save money if I get it without PnP and just have a pro do it! Would Best Buy/Circuit City/Tweeter do it, or should I look for a private shop?

My take it to dom and get it done right.. Or atleast take the unit and instructions to someone capable and reputable and see if they will do it..

If this is all to save $100 then I would strongly think about what you may be doing..

$100 bucks aint bad! Especially when the Screen and HU is gonna cost like $1400 to replace if you screw it up.

I installed mine in about 30 minutes by tapping in to 4 wires behind the passenger side kick panel. It was that easy!
