Removing the entire Dash Panel Help

Removing the entire Dash Panel Help
I punctured a hole through part of the heater core, just to the right of the gas pedal. I goofed up and drilled a screw through a plastic piece which I thought had enough clearance. Punctured the heater core and had radiator fluid spill out.
Anyway... According to the Acura Service Manual, I have to remove the entire dash to get to the heater core. I am almost done removing the dash, but question is why do I have to remove the entire steering column? Manual states to run a wire along the slider shaft to prevent the shaft from pulling out. Anyone have any suggestions / tips on removing the dash panel? Do I have to remove the steering column?
