Anyone Just add a Sub?
Anyone Just add a Sub?
Has anyone here on this board just added a sub to there factory system, thats a sub and amp to run it, does it make the overall system louder, or does the bass overwhelm the treble?
Fred, I just added 2 subs and an amp this past weekend and my system sounds awesome. I also have the Polk DX-6's in the front. It sounds very crisp and clear. If you want to check it out let me know, I'm here in Farm. Hills. Also, I was gonna ask you if you have springs or a body kit ( I think you do ) if I could come check them out so I can decide if I want them.
If you want DX-6's I know of one place that has 2 pair left and they told me $75 a pair.

are there RCA outputs on the stock head unit that you can run to your amp? I have a Blaupunkt amp and 2 10"MTX subs in a box that I want to install. So are you saying I don't need a new head unit?
nimhet,
It's easy to do this mod. =) I hope I explain this okay, cause I'm not that good telling how to do things, I can show things much better. Just wanted to apologize before hand.
There isn't any rca outputs on the TL's Stock headunit. You need to tap into the wires for your amps input. The Stock sub amp is behind the rear seat on the passenger side. First remove the bottom part of the seat. It's only held on by one bolt near the middle toward the driver's side. Then there is one bolt on each side holding the rest of the seat to the car. Take those off and romove the back seat. Now you see the small little thing called the BOSE AMP. There is two bolts to it. After you removed the amp you can unplug the wire harness from it. From there you need to cut bout an inch or so ( the black sheilding holding all the wires together) to give you some room to do the wire tapping. After cutting the sheilding and pulling it up some, you will see a brown coated twisted pair of wires. That is what you are going to tap with speak wire with an rca at the other end. You can pick one up at any electronic store like Radio Shack. Also pick up some wire taps for an easier install. It seems it doesn't really matter how you connect the rca wire to the brown wires (Meaning the +/-). You need three wire taps. With the first wire tap, tap one of the brown wires, then the other wire tap, tap the other brown wire. That's it for the Sub input to your amp. Now to tap the remote wire so that your aftermarket amp will turn on with the HU. In the stock amp wiring harness you will see a blue wire. That's the romote to turn on your amp. tap that one. Other then that you need to run a power wire from the battery to your amp in the trunk. In the trunk you can ground the amp to the chassis by the white earring thingy hook in the driver's side. That's it, put the back seat back together and now it's time to have some fun with for your new bass.
I hope this helps you out to install a sub(s) to a stock HU.

I just added (2) 10'' subwoofers to my factory Bose unit and it sounds pretty impressive. I just got my car a week ago and I just wanted some bass in it for now until I have the money to buy what I really want so I had a local stereo shop install an A/D/S amp and a couple of 10'' subs I had laying around in a band pass box. I had a 2-door tahoe before I bought my Acura and I sunk over $8,000 into my stereo. To be honest, it didn't sound much different than my Acura sounds now with just a band pass box and an amp using my factory head unit. Unless you're a stereo fanatic I wouldn't bother spending the $$ to get another head unit because you wont be able to use your steering wheel controls (if you have them) and also the changer if you have one. You wont have a problem using your factory head unit but you might have to buy a couple converters/adapters to add onto it. I would definitely recommend buying a bass control knob so you can take the bass out of your factory speakers and just use your bass knob to control the subs. You don't want to blow your factory speakers! I don't have a bass knob yet because they were out of stock but I definitely need one because it sucks adjusting the bass through the deck. This way you can tune your amp so your box slams and also be able to turn it down if your not in the mood for alot of bass. The way my car is right now is when I have my stereo turned a little bit all I hear is the bass so I have to turn it down through the deck but it also takes the bass out of your factory speakers so there's too much treble. But if you have a bass knob you can keep your bass adjusted somewhere in the middle so your seperates sound a little more full and just adjust your bass the way you like it. Hope this helps you out.

there is no dash kit for our cars period, dont even waste time looking. any good aftermarket stereo shop can make a custom mount and face plate. as for the rca jacks that someone asked about. you buy a converter sold at any stereo store that will change the wire output into rca jacks. i went that route but the output of the bose system is like 3/4 watt. when most preamp out is at least 4 watt. as for another question asked - the subs wont over power the treble because the bose system has no treble to overwhelm. the bose system is all mid range. those that put polk had to find not made any more speakers that people are moding too. just by some good speakers and pay the small fee to have them installed. ya they had to do a little cutting on the do but big deal. you will see in my sig what i have and my install fee was very small and it took them all day. because at more shops if you buy the product there the install is cheaper. i paid 50 bucks to install and make a custom face plate for my alpine 9897 stereo. cant be that. of course the radio cost a few big bills.
