I'm sorry to all the Acura fans out there but can we final cut the bullshit and agree this isn't the car Acura hyped about?
Doesn't matter if it comes with double wish bone suspension as 90% of whoever is buying it won't realize what it is or what it does other than it sounds like something built for a race track
Doesn't matter that the transmission is beefed up or that it has SH-AWD because it's still held back from doing a proper launch control and holds back on certain shifts
Doesn't matter that it has a twin scroll engine with 6 bolt mains or whatever else we can brag about, it's an ass backwards design, redline's too low and the lackluster power.
Doesn't matter that "it's a great deal" not when dealershits are marking them up at 5-15K.
Doesn't matter if you claim "It will be reliable" because it will cost significantly more to maintain long term.
All I've been reading are petty excuses from those that failed to acknowledge from the beginning that it was over priced, over hyped, over rated and over weight. From "the engine isn't broken in yet" to the "wasn't in sport plus mode" to "didn't launch control correct" to "It beat the S4 at the Acura event" to "Soyfan did 4.5". Let's just drop the BS already. Can we all agree it's not what Acura and their clever PR wording made out this car to be? It's simply a well rounded vehicle with decent luxury features, with OK performance that could be bought at a decent price (without dealer markup's) and that's it.

In other words, it’s just the same kind of car Acura has always built, and not the quantum jump their marketing department or dealerships would lead you to believe. If this is what Precision Crafted Performance is, they’re hosed. They couldn’t compete with the competition when it came to luxury, so they (smartly) pivoted to performance, but evidently they can’t compete on performance either. So it’s back to competing on price, but with the ADM that’s a no go too.

Is performance everything? Absolutely not. But they also cheaped out on the luxury departments taking away a number of advance features. You know if it was the Advance + the Type S specific stuff there would still be a good value case IMO and I’d be less turned off personally by it being outclassed performance wise but as it sits it’s like okay so for 52-54k dollars I get none of the luxuries of the price point and none of the performance of the price point and on top of that you have to live with the other questionable choices like the touchpad which works better than I thought it would but still it’s a mistake other luxury brands have been learning from.
It is what it is, I don’t think anybody who buys one will be unhappy with it. I still think it’s a great car and wish the best to everyone who buys one. These are just my opinions.

“We are a performance brand first and foremost – we haven’t talked about luxury in quite a while now,” Ikeda says. In fact, Acura doesn’t use luxury in its primary messaging anymore, recalling the first two years of the brand’s existence, when the word was nowhere to be found in any official marketing. “The L word,” as Ikeda puts it, is not Acura’s focus. “We’re getting that feeling of fun and optimism coming back into our performance image.”

I do own a 1G TLX, and no the regular 2G is merely a much needed evolution of it. The Type S was supposed to put Acura back into the performance conversation, but instead the only time it’s talked about now is when people make fun of it for being the slowest in its segment.

Just curious, but doesn't the TLX-S have a separate sport mode for the transmission?
I know most people were complaining because it's not a true manual mode as it still upshifts automatically before redline, but wondering if in these videos during the "sport mode" runs that they bothered to change the transmission mode to Sport or not.

Also, there is a total dead spot in 1st gear until you get to 3000 RPM. Literally nothing is happening, then the turbo surge starts. The only way to enjoy this car is to leave it in auto mode and give up on the 0-60 part.

No. It's not what Acura's PR made it out to be. When I saw the power, I knew it wasn't going to be beating the other cars in it's class. I didn't care. I don't like the other cars in it's class. Lol. Except the M340i. The Audi and Mercedes. Ewww. Audi S4 looks muted. Mercedes. Not a fan of their interior layout.
This is all everyone's opinions really. If someone doesn't like it. Fine. If someone loves it. Fine. If they love it, they're going to defend it. That's something EVERYONE here will have to get over.
What I don't like though? Is people just down right dogging the car because it's not what they want and talking about they're going to another brand. Ok. Go.
I THOUGHT this thread was supposed to be about pricing and availability...

I've driven the Type S. The transmission always upshifts early. There's nothing you can do to prevent it, Sport, Sport+, doesn't matter. It doesn't even go near redline, let alone hold the revs up high. It's extremely frustrating. You try going into a corner and want to be in the high rev spot so you can go WOT out of the corner and the car goes HA-HA, upshifts and you go @#$$_#@!!!
Also, there is a total dead spot in 1st gear until you get to 3000 RPM. Literally nothing is happening, then the turbo surge starts. The only way to enjoy this car is to leave it in auto mode and give up on the 0-60 part.

Most cars will list their maximum power @ rpm in the specs. Acura lists 355 hp @ 5500 rpm so there is your answer. The S4 is listed at 349 hp @ 6300 rpm so it will have higher shift points. Based on the race I think the S4 BHP number is fudged downward.
Some of the tunes raise the red line but its dumb in most cases. You are pushing the engine into a RPM range it does not want to be in & the turbos are dead over low 6000.

Good thing is Acura folks are gonna start seeing a decline in sales vs people in the showroom. They'll try to figure out why the Type S aren't moving. When they see the stupid mark ups, dealers will catch a stern talking to form Acura and be made to drop the mark ups. Especially the dealers that don't move much inventory.

They don't need to figure anything out. You really think one of those Acura bean pushers isn't on this forum, watching everything we say? They know exactly what's happening. If CTR is anything to go on (4+ years on the market, still 20-30% over MSRP), we're in for disappointment.
I think it's more of "Let's see what's going on." Not "Hey. The guys on the forums are saying they're marking them up." I'm sure if a massive group of serious buyers put in a complain to the manufactures, they'd crack down. Lol. Not just a bunch of people on a car forum that were talking about they were going to the competition because the Type S doesn't have HUD.

Got one coming next month. Unfortunately, neither of the three local dealers have been able to get what I'm looking for, so I'll be driving a few hours to get it. They should have the build date later this week.

An outside point...trying to pedal a performance car without a HUD might suggest the Acura is the one thats not serious.

Two things. Are you sure there is a massive group of serious buyers. How do you weed them out as serious from the general posters. Some of the biggest pro TLX-S guys have not bought one in 15 years since back when they were $37.000.

If every single poster here bought Type S, it would still be irrelevant number. How many of us here are really active? Let's say 1000 which isn't realistic at all but let's say it. If every single one of us bought it, it wouldn't even make a dent in what they hope to sell. Realistically, I doubt even 50 people from this forum will buy a Type S. That's less than state size of Delaware dealers will sell this year.

Forget 50 from the forum buying one I don't think there are 50 people on the entire forum including all us haters.
Only way to tell what is selling is if they break out the Type-S sales number. Unless thats done the claims of sales will be off the wall. Nobody sells a major chunk of their volume in these types of cars out side of the exotics which is all they sell.

They'll never tell. I've asked Honda through so many channels, social media, corporate contact forms, even Honda media reps for info how many manual Accords were sold, the closest I got to an answer is same what they told C&D when they asked, between 1% and 2% of all sales. Why would it be a secret? How would that hurt them to release it? Civic Type R gets serial number stamped below the shifter. PMC editions also. But God forbit they release info on manuals.

Manual Accords would have sold better if dealer GMs weren't such idiots. When we went shopping to replace my daughter's old Accord EXL V6 with a new one the dealer (where we had been buying Accords for the family since 1988) said they didn't keep any in stock since there was no customer demand. When I asked how long it would take to get one if we ordered it. The reply? Quite a while, we have a waiting list for them!

Well that's what I'm saying. They're not going to take serious a bunch of people on a forum that have bashed the Type S, talking about how it's supposed to have a HUD, and have no real intentions of buying it. But I meant people that are serious buyers as a whole.
You you FEEL that it NEEDS an HUD. It doesn't. It's not a race car. Someone being stuck on something so small compared to the rest of the car, they're not going to take that serious.
If they actually watched these forums, they probably wouldn't even consider making them again as much as people complained about what it didn't have and other cars that can beat it.

As much as I like to bag on Acura dealerships for marking up the Type S, yeesh take a look at the markups on the 4Runner TRD Pro: https://www.4runners.com/threads/msr...st-them.20301/
$10K-$20K in markups for a car that's going on 12 years old now! Makes the Acura dealerships look like they're being run by Mother Teresa.

I went to the dealer EXPECTING to buy a new Type-S to replace my current TL Type S 6MT. It never occurred to me I wouldn't be able to have either, since they are readily available on the Accord, TLX and the German cars Acura claimed to be marketing against. As far as that being small compared to the rest of the car, its performance is also lacking. So, in a short time I've gone from eagerly awaiting a new Type S to going, for the first time in my life, to a BMW dealer to sample their wares. I would have looked at a Jag XF, but Jaguar is abandoning sedans in favor of electrified SUVs. If I could have an XF with the new 450hp engine they introduced for the 2020 F-Type I would buy one in a heartbeat. I don't need a Jag sports car, I still have the Series III E-Type I bought new in 1974.
As it turns out, I really liked the BMWs. I preferred the 5 series, which is closer to the TLX Type-S in size and weight and offers all the candy I can eat. I'm fortunate in not having to watch my pennies, so I'm thinking of getting an M550i. I tend to keep my cars for a very long time, so why not? I thought I would be getting the best performing Acura short of the NSX. A car with all the latest bells and whistles. When it missed the mark on both features and performance I was very disappointed.

Who the f**k are you to tell me what my car needs or doesn't need? Have you even driven a car with a HUD? I have and I love it. I also like the 360 views that are common these days.

As a owner of a pristine 3rd gen TL (6MT, Navi, A-spec) I had a hard time finding another vehicle (more or less for my wife). We test drove sooo many vehicles and nothing felt like the connection I have with the 3rd gen TL. I ended up getting a fully loaded 2019 X3 M40i which has the heads up display. I will say, it's indeed an awesome feature and I can't see myself getting another vehicle without it. Even things like cooled seats and heated rear seats were something I didn't want to give up and so I got lucky that I found everything I wanted. It was the best money spent including the performance of the B58 Engine. This is not me saying my vehicle is better than XYZ or BMW is the best, it's the best option that worked for us and what I ultimately wanted. Vehicle is paid for, modified and has extended warranty. Wifey loves it, I love the performance and it's a win / win. The M550i is a serious sedan. It's well worth it over the M5 (I know the BMW guys are going to jump me) but honestly, the M550i is a well rounded vehicle with a 0-60 in 3.4 seconds and you get a better riding vehicle vs the M5. Though, I do have a sweet spot for a CS edition M5 / M4

This car is 100x better than the 2007 TL Type S! I kept my 2006 knowing that the HP gain between the navi 6spd and the Type S was less than a 30HP gain… plus the seats in the type S were hideous!! Same car, same engine just a different iteration.
This new Type S is something totally different!! Unless you try to argue that it’s the same 3.5L as before just with a turbo and 70 mor HP!!

Who the f**k are you to tell me what my car needs or doesn't need? Have you even driven a car with a HUD? I have and I love it. I also like the 360 views that are common these days.
Folks don't want to spend premium dollars on outdated tech no matter their phone or their car. Acura puts customers into this situation for no reason whatsoever. Just let folks have their fully loaded cars with any of the paint colors offered and any interior. Limiting buyers for no reason on this makes ZERO sense. I'd love to have a Purple Type-S with Orchid interior but that isn't happening....
BMW's offerings are stunning but I don't know about long term reliability. For nearly 17 years they have been having failures of the valve stem seals and other issues on their V8's that are labor intensive to fix. 2009+ active hybrid 5 and 7 series are being totalled out once the battery computer fails as they don't sell it seperate from the battery, which is over 10K minimum.

^ agree, once you are accustomed to those features in a DD it's hard to go back esp when you are spending good $$$ for the latest tech. Folks don't want to spend premium dollars on outdated tech.

You leave it out & you leave out a very very useful & image enchasing piece of hardware. Nobody wants to look down inside the car to see shift points at speed. For the average guys not interested in 0-60 having the entire interchange on the interstate displayed, including the lane you should be in, before you get to it is a very good thing. You can get one in an Accord, Lamborghini & most everything in between except the TLX-TypeS.
I remember the same deal when turn signals came out. Who needs them I can just stick my arm out the window? I had to stick my arm out to pass my drivers test in 1959. Now they are universal.

One thing no one is talking about is that the new TLX was announced to the world over a year ago in June 2020. I'm talking about the final product, not prototype from 2018 and 2019. Type S is just now rolling out, after the car is more than a year old. It's almost obsolete by default. Not twin turbo, not 4s 60mph, not dual clutch, not available in manual, lower engine option comes with more luxury features, etc. It missed it's mark. Plain and simple. Mark-ups are just adding salt to open injury.
