2021 Acura TLX vs The Competition

Compared to other sportbacks, the front side profile just looks odd. What should be more of a wedge shape for performance, appears more SUV like which is not good looking. Comparing it to Stinger and S5 SB, not for specs but for design. Apologies for different image sizes.

Plan of the day if you have some extra cash laying around. Buy the Integra sell the engine & install a Civic R crate engine. Expect it would be close to a bolt in with with the exception of the ECU. That might just be a tune or a swap with a civic black box.

Or just buy a new VW Golf Type R...

Speaking of the evil German cars got this in my morning run of emails.
"Thanks for contacting the BMW Genius Team regarding your vehicle tracking request.Your 2022 BMW M4 Competition xDrive Convertible was released to carrier November 22, 2021 and is estimated to arrive at your BMW center November 26, 2021. Please note, all dates are estimates and subject to change."

Although it's just marketing sluff, I did see one positive from the last paragraph
If you're doubting the Integra's credentials, Ikeda points out that at the heart of every Integra is a great Civic, which Honda has now. He also tells us that the car's chief engineer owned two older Integras. "I said, 'Why did you buy an Integra?' Ikeda recalled. "He said, 'It was a very cool car and I was young and I was excited.' I said, 'Well, you know all the ingredients already. Just make that, because that's what it is.'"

I'll admit I cheated a bit by taking a look at the C&D numbers for the K5 GT. Slower 0-60 but higher trap speed is the formula for losing the dig but winning the roll. The only unknown was whether or not the SH-AWD system would be able to make up for Sam driving the car , and evidently it was.

On the flip side, you slathered Type-S badges all over this new car and talked it up all over the internet. Now that the figures are out, you know there are going to be pimply kids in their STi's, Accords, CTRs, K5 GTs, etc looking to run you. Me, personally, I can't justify dropping $53k on a performance car that gets outgunned from a roll from a Kia K5 GT. Whether it be actually racing or simply trying to pass them on the highway. Sure, I want a car that's more comfortable to drive day-to-day, but performance is still near the top of my priorities when shopping for my next car.
[My reasoning may be flawed, but both the Kia G5 GT & CTR have worse 0-60 times, but their 100MPH and 130MPH times are actually quicker than the Type-S ... remove the hassle of launching a FWD car and from a roll, these quicker times [i]should mean that these cars are going to put some distance on the Type-S, assuming gearing isn't then an issue. By the same logic, looks like the Type-S will still beat the Accord 2.0T and STi, thankfully.]

what i think hurts the design most is the lower belt line in at the rear quarter panel. In all the other fastback vehicles this line flows directly under the window and is sharp and crisp but its down lower and softer/rounder on the integra. This works on a sedan (like the TLX) but on a fast back it creates too much visual space so it looks wrong, like a swollen ankle. Looks more like a Honda crosstour then a modern fastback. This same thing is minimized on the new civic hatch by having an extended accent from the rear window, tail lights that come further forward and a sharper kink in the body line. It looks better to me on the civic in what is basically the same car(although i dislike the civic hatch directly from the rear) but the hips from the TLX are probably something they wanted to add so that they can try to create an acura family shape rather then the honda shape.
I also dont care for the yellow colour or the integra sticker that makes it hard to read the full body language of the car.
Having said that, i have no issues with the premise of the car. The integra was always a gussied up civic, just like the ILX. The problem is when some people hear integra they only remember The type R, ignoring that 99% of integras sold were not type R’s. There will be a type S that people can more accurately complain about not meeting their expectations, but anyone thinking this vehicle somehow disrespects the purity of a 98 integra LS/GS with a 140hp 5-speed has created a fantasy land in their head.

Personally, I wouldn't ever consider buying either, but if I was forced to buy either, I'd pick the new Civic Si every single time over the upcoming Integra.

The new Si looks TIGHT but the Integra looks like a complete train wreck.

They should shoot whoever picked that yellow for the sneak release. Very bad way to kick off the marketing campaign. Yellow is a very hard color to get right on a car & not look like the taxi fleet model.

Agree, got a very dark tri-coat gray. Non standard color for the series, had to pay the BMW tax for it. Took a chance on the color but most likely for the next 6 or 8 months I can sell it for more than I paid for it.

Thanks all. Guy pulled it out of the shop for a quick look...did not faint or anything & it did not bite me. Has this slick button on the console that opens & closes the exhaust flaps. Think its a keeper.

I'm afraid with the side trip to the M-Studio for the Individual Manufaktur work I won't see my M550i until March. It's a 2022 Week 3 build schedule, but then it goes from Dingolfing to the MStudio in Garching and then back to Dingolfing for final work before the train ride to the port.

The scheduling for paint revolves around them having enough of a particular color to have a batch to run. Changing colors means stopping the line and switching paint, changing or cleaning nozzles, etc. I'm not sure, but I think the upholstery is installed on the line with the established production date including the delays associated with sourcing and sewing the leather. The trip to the studio is for the other special work, e.g. engraving on the dash.

That said, Infiniti is another make that tend to leave opportunity on the table. Sourcing the G37's lethargic 7AT for the Q50 (let alone the RS400 version) is flatout shameful. (Bad enough they got cold feet with the Eau Rouge prospect.) The Red Sport would probably be a blast with ZF8.

So Nissan's nearly decade old Q50 platform without sophisticated SH-AWD, 10AT, earth shattering engineering, walked the TLX-S.

That was an interesting race, I agree the TLX is overall a better car as that Infinity has one of the worst interiors but then you buy an S for performance and on that front its amazing that the new Type S got beaten by a 10 year old car with worse AWD and Gearbox. I sincerely hope that there are some good tunes out soon for Type S. Oh Btw it seems the Q50S can simply be tuned to be a red sport lol

Well I do care about the power in the sense I don’t want to lose anything coming from my 2016 TLX V6… sure upgrading to a 2021+ A-Spec I wouldn’t lose any features and would gain more features. However I prefer to have a V6 Turbo over I4 Turbo. Had the Type-S not exist I more than likely would’ve jumped into a 2018-2020 A-Spec. I also like how the type-s has the adaptive dampers too
