2021/2022 TLX versus the Competition

I would hope and asume that the issues I had have been fixed with updates and improvements in the model years since then. The most annoying thing involved its ADAS. I'm a big user of adaptive cruise and lane keeping assist, but this car drove me mad. When you were on a straight road and not inputting any steering, and you inevitably get the "steering required" message, it would play an audible triple beep through the speakers. Same thing if you started to veer even remotely close to a lane marker - audible triple beep. My commute is all highway, so it would be an almost constant orchestra of beeps as I cruised down the road, and it was maddening. Even if I had LKAS and ACC disabled, it still beeped at me. As you probably know, in Acuras and Hondas, you get a message on the MID and a shake of the steering wheel as the first warning, a far superior, inobtrusive system. I would never buy a Hyundai/Kia/Genesis again if they didn't change this. I know their ADAS have undergone several iterations since then and is now highly regarded.
Another example is that radio presets could not be reordered. I use SiriusXM exclusively, and the radio presets showed up in numerical order only. Pretty silly and also pretty frustrating.
Another was the keyless access. This was a $49k car in 2019, and the door handles were not touch sensitive. You had to press a physical button on the outside of the door to unlock it before pulling the handle.
These all probably seem like tiny things, and they mostly are, but lots of small annoyances and quality issues really ended up tarnishing my time with an otherwise great car.

Radio presets can now be re-ordered. They release updates twice a year to the infotainment that are easily updated with a USB key.
I agree on the door handle/keyless access observation. Once you get used to touch-capacitive handles on an Acura, the physical button-press on the Stinger seems archaic.
I only paid $33K for mine new in late 2020, so a few missing niceties are a fair tradeoff.
Things I love:
- Classic design and impressive road presence
- Great performance vs. fuel efficiency balance (the slept-on 2.0L gets 31 mpg on the highway)
- Perfect size and capacity -- fits passengers in the back without being a punishment; tons of room in the hatch. Fits in my smallish garage.
- Drives smoothly and stably at high speeds
- Great H+K sound system and available red seats that aren't nearly as garish as the bright red Acura uses.
- Older MID technology. Even the color MID on the newer/GT1-GT2 models looks like 16-bit Sega in a 4K world
- Lame LED+halogen headlights on the 2020-2021 4-cylinder models. 2018/2019 4-banger models offered a "premium" package that got the beautiful full LED headlights from the GT; 2022-2023 2.5L models have newer LED lights but with a worse design.
- Thin paint that chips/scratches easily
- Service interval - I like how Acura/Honda indicates what needs to be done; the Stinger just pops up "Service Required" every 7-8K miles.

If you are open to a Genesis there are some crazy deals right now at least in my area, w/ $5K off of MSRP being advertised among other things; and my area does have standalone Genesis dealers.

Same here in NJ; they've always been selling at competitive pricing. Unfortunate for them, it really must not have been working well as G70 and Stinger (any trim) sightings are not that commonplace in these parts. I do see more of them during my travels outside of the northeast, which may/may not help the cause. (To be fair, the greater NYC region is a bigtime BMW/Audi/Acura/Lexus/Infiniti stronghold, with Tesla being the only make which seems to making inroads.)

the Prelude looks a little generic but I'm just glad Honda is coming out with a coupe...

I owned a 2019 Stinger GT1 for about a year. Overall it was a good and fun car, but it had a lot of quality issues that really nagged me, and several UX issues that annoyed me to no end. The car was gorgeous though, and garnered more compliments, comments, and questions than any other car I've owned, including a modded Mustang GT and a purple BMW coupe.
I am flip flopping between the 22/2023 stinger gt2 and a TLX type-s in the next 6 months or so

Do you know if your 2019 issues have been cleared up in the 2022/2023 models? @cwatt79

I doubt they changed the LKAS behavior, but it's worth test driving to check out. Generally, this car beeps a lot. It will beep the seatbelt reminder after what seems like 10 seconds of low speed driving, and doesn't stop until the seatbelt is engaged... even in Park, iirc.
Stations can be rearranged now. The keyless entry is still (somewhat annoyingly) a hard button push on the handle, rather than touch-activated. I will say the one time touch-sensitive handles on our MDX are annoying is when I am washing or drying the car. If I have the key in my pocket, the slightest touch locks or unlocks the doors. (Yes, throwing the key inside the car solves this first-world problem.)
The 2022-2023 models offer a larger touchscreen, and it looks like they updated the MMID for GT models (see https://stingerforum.org/threads/sti...-gauges.25491/). There was also the addition of rear-seat occupant warning, which might have been from a recent safety mandate.
Overall, I look at it as a sport tourer/modern classic car first and foremost. Most of the tech is largely based on what was available in 2016, so it's indeed outdated, but the special-ness of the car far exceeds a few misses with features. A proper Genesis version of the Stinger as a liftback would have been awesome... the current sibling, the G70, is much shorter with tiny rear seats and tiny trunk, but I love the quilted seats and interior materials.
Oh yeah... the 2023 models offered a weird package that puts Alcantara on the dash and steering wheel. That may not be your thing (it isn't mine) so keep that in mind.

BTW, as much as I appreciate my Stinger, I still love Acura, and want to love the 2nd gen TLX. Our 2017 MDX at 75K miles has been incredible and continues to meet our needs perfectly. I sold my 2015 TLX in 2020 and wanted to get the new generation... but it's relatively huge for a midsize car -- at 75" wide and 195" long, it's 1" wider and just 1" shorter than a BMW 5-series!) and simply won't fit in my garage with our MDX.
An Acura-based, 4-door RWD liftback would be awesome at almost any price.

Another sh1t news about German automakers. First killer maintenance cost and now subscription features!
I guess they have no choice but to charge people to increase their actual margins as their real sales numbers are less than what they report. Most Germans automakers lie, we know that!

Good win for the TLX, pulled it off despite weighing like a 1000 lbs more.
#1262
I'm not sure why other straight line comparisons wouldn't give the TLX the advantage with the SH-AWD. The straight line bit with the standing start is where the TLX has the advantage; by the time they get to the hairpin the TLX is already ahead by 3-4 car lengths. The hairpin favors the Integra; on the skidpad the Integra pulls 1.02g vs 0.96g for the TLX.

Very nice and cool video! Regardless of their final response, I think they pointed out some great things about both cars. I strongly disagree with one of their points that G70 looks more luxury. I think the quilted seats fools you at first then everything else looks below TLX. I have checked these two cars back to back multiple times.
Enjoy!

I'll be honest: Urban Gray does NOTHING for me. I pretty much prefer every other available color choice over UG....even TEP, which is a Type S unique color at least.
...back to that last video, I honestly think the G70 is a good looking sports sedan that deserves its due as well.

The comments about the G70 "feeling" stronger may have more to do with the TLX-S carrying an extra 200 lbs than the 5hp difference.

It could also be due to the power delivery. The Type S feels like it runs out of breath north of 5000 RPM and it’s 6200 RPM redline is relatively low. Whereas, the 3.3TT feels like it pulls hard all the way up to its 7000RPM redline.

I looked at quite a few cars in this class but I like my Type S. I did not want a car with twin turbos which most have, one turbo is enough, and less to go wrong. Where the car sold me was with the SHAWD, it just eats up winding roads, and enjoy this car more every time I drive it.

I've not driven either, but I know the sweet capabilities of SH-AWD. Not much rivals it.
Plus, I'll take Honda bones over Hyundai/Kia bones every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

[QUOTE=fiatlux;16927407]Or a combination of the two. When I test drove the new Type-S back when they were introduced I was surprised that it had so much more HP and torque on paper but didn't really "feel" like it compared to the '07 Type S I drove to the dealer that day. I was used to the 6MT and the higher reeving engine. Of course, my old Type-S was also 500 pounds lighter than the new one!!

Somewhat to this assertion, I received an objective observation from my oldest son (34), who's driven my 21 A-Spec FWD (stage 3 tune, PRL intake and I/C) and recently had some wheel time in a 23 Type S. He mentioned that it did handle pretty good despite its heft but that my A-Spec pulled much harder up top.
That said, roll racing against its most direct competitors likely wont be in the wheelhouse of the Type S but, probably nothing that an eventual tune couldn't remedy.

Not even close to being a direct competitor: the new AMG E53. But what's interesting stylistically is that it has "wide-body" fenders compared to the base E-class E300, however even with the wide-body addition the AMG E53's vehicle width is identical to the TLX (base and Type S).

Great time to negotiate on Acura vehicles for those shopping:
- Overall Honda sales surged 20.9% in Q1 2024, with the Civic leading the charge with a 36% increase. The CR-V also saw impressive growth of over 41%.
- While Honda thrived, Acura saw a 9.2% decline in sales. This slump was driven by a drop in demand for the Integra (-15.8%), TLX (-29.3%), and MDX (-26.8%).
- The RDX was the only Acura model to experience positive sales growth in Q1, with a significant increase of 48.6% compared to the previous year.

Since you mentioned skidpad numbers, I thought this article would be appealing on the handling/skidpad compared to the NSX: https://www.edmunds.com/car-news/202...ck-tested.html

I'm thinking of doing the same myself as my P Zeros are almost done. For my vanity though, I really like the sidewall design/graphic of the Pirelli P Zeros, but the Michelin's are kinda cool too
