Just checked in on the thread to see what kinda millage people are getting on the DWS. Well I put mine on at 101000 now at 172000 and think they will make it to 200000 no problem. What are others getting on them? Just a reminder from the beginning of this thread I drive 100 miles a day 90% Highway.

Hey peeps - I have been very unhappy with my DWS due to road noise. Had them on for 30k mi now, of mixed driving. Did my first rotation after putting about 20km and my car was never the same. The noise resembles broken bearing but tech said it is due to effect of unever tire wear. This noise is driving me nuts and I am thinking of getting them swapped for a set of used Michelins. Wondering if anyone has similar thing to say.

Also, would my tires bought from Discount Tire in Nov 2010, be still covered under any kind of wtty?

It's not the tires. Get whatever is causing the uneven wear fixed or you'll have the same problem with any tires. I suspect you prolly have cupping on the rear tires.

i have owned the car since new, it is at 92k mi. never been in accident. looked at the tires very closely and no visible cupping. what else can I do, I have no idea.

I had similar issues with them. I could not figure it out. Sounded like bearing noise. I took it to the dealership, to the tire shop and to a private mechanic. No one could determine the cause.

I had the DWS for about 6K miles and swapped them for the General UHP for a week and the noise went away. I eventually swapped those out for the Michelin MXM4. These are not as aggressive but I have had great success with the MXM4.

In fact I am at 43K miles on them with about 5-6/32 left.

In response to a few PM's I've received, thought I should post an update:

Purchased stock size DWS on 8/2/10 at 97,919 miles. Currently at 125,806 (9/24/12). Total miles on tires as of today=27,887.

Still have 5/32" to 6/32" tread left (prolly closer to 6/32") and all of the "DWS" still shows. Have been very happy with these tires. Treadwear is almost too good to be true. I have rotated them at every oil change which comes out to be about every 7500 miles.

I did finally notice flatspotting this month after the car sat for 14 days, but it was gone within 3 miles of driving. First time it's happened to me in over 2 years. I keep the pressure at OEM levels for a 6MT (35/32).

It's probably because you put on 20K before rotating them. I don't have DWS's but it seems like people like them. I rotate my tires every 5K.

EXACT same problem here. I just rotated the tires and have noticed increased road noise. Sounds like a bad bearing. Tires appear to be wearing evenly.

Great results with the DWS so far. I really can't see/hear/feel any difference than the AS Plus. I suspect they may do a little better in the snow...we will see.

Well, it finally rained here (Southern Calif.) and I got a chance to judge the Continentals. They were stable, I didn't feel any hydroplaning, cornering was good. All in all, they just felt... good.

They also took a hit on a dry road and kept going in a straight line: a Ford 150 ahead of me kicked up a (large) piece of drywall, which hit me front on (from my left headlight/mirror to the middle of my windshield) and busted my windshield. I didn't flinch (well, my hands didn't), but, also, the car didn't budge on taking a pretty hard hit. Not sure how much was the car, how much was the rubber, but a happy (well, except for my deductible) ending.

Well Its time to replace my Continental DWS on 10-1-2009 I had them put on my 2005 Acura TL started with 101000 mile today I have 184,000 Miles on my TL. I noted about 10000 miles ago that the side wall on some of the tires started cracking and today I was driving and thought I had a flat. I don't have a flat but one of the tires side walls is just shot cracked all the way around and the tire is loosing air. What sucks is the treed could go another 30000 + but the side walls failed. these tires were rated for 50,000 and I got 84,000 on them not bad! So what should I get is the question I have now?

I had a set of Kumho's Ecsta ASX I think they were and wasn't too impressed. After 10K miles the noise level started slowly rising.

Well I just ordered the new 245/45R17 XL Continental PureContact with EcoPlus Technology Blackwall from Tire rack. should get them early next week. I decided to give them a try and I really like the 70,000 mile life and the excellent wet weather traction. If they are anything like my extream DWS in wet roads I will be happy even with 84,000 on them they just rock in wet weather!

I ordered them from Discount instead they were giving a $50 visa card with the purchase. Tire rack would of been $666 Discount was $618 that includes the $50 gift card subtracted.

Nice, i ordered me some DWS which should be coming in today from DTD. Overall cost me total 631 price match to tirerack with additional 50$ off and 30$ for using my DT credit card so 551 total .... are you by any chance changing out the TPMS? I'm seriously debating whether to change them out or not

i had the same thought... i was happy to get 30k out of my conti's. on my second set now, hoping they last 35-40k this time they are a great all season tire though, very good in wet conditions. where i live we have lots of standing water when it rains on highways/interstate and they are solid.

I don't know if it's just me but I went through a pair of DWS within 12 months, got all changed, busted a front tire and got both fronts replaced, my rears went on for 18 months and died, got them replaced, and another 6 months later (almost 18 months for the fronts) and they are on the way out, hydroplaning like's its the new fad. Dont think I've put more than 30K Mile in the last 18 months total but these tires are wearing out like hot knife through butter.

Rotations and alignments performed as needed.

TireRack themselves say the tires performed very well under their tests but so many reviewers for this tire have attested to its premature expiration. They are good for when they work, but the retire really quick for my liking. Really confused what other brands I can try out.

i'm going to try the Bridgestone RE970 next... (Note: *NOT* the RE960)

I went through two sets of DWS and loved them, but am experimenting on my other car. I loved the Pilot Sport A/S Non-Plus, but they only lasted me 20,000 miles. Switched to the Bridgestone RE960 on all my cars, and thought they were mediocre... I recommended the Pilot Sport A/S Plus to my friend for his TL (mine has DWS), and I also installed the Pilot Sport A/S Plus on my Infiniti. My friend had the problem where the sides wore-out way faster than the middle. Tire shop tried to blame his tires being under-inflated, but even on my Infiniti, I can see the signs of the same thing happening, and I'm religeous about checking my tire pressure. So despite the fact that I love the performance of the Pilot Sport A/S Plus, I cannot recommend it. When my tires wear out, I'll try out the RE970AS on my Infiniti, and the Acura will get another set of DWS. (It's wifey's car, and she loves the DWS)

You are probably a fairly aggressive driver, or you travel on rough roads.
I had my DWS for 2 years now (16k on them or so) and when I needed to replace one of my tires the mechanic said I don't need to replace the pair because the other side looks very good. He thought the tire was much younger than 2 years. I drive half city, half country roads and am not shy with the accelerator.
I like the tires a lot and bought them for my wife's Civic as well. She noticed an improvement in handling right away.

I was leaning toward the Michelin MXM4 on my 2008 base TL but these would not be available for 6-10 weeks so I went with a set of Continental Extreme Grip DWS instead. Paid $807.00 for a set of four about a month ago and noticed an immediate improvement in quietness and ride quality over the Firehawk Wide Oval Indy 500s that were on the car when I bought it. The other night I had an opportunity to try the DWS tires in snow and they did great.
Not sure how the DWS tires will be long-term but so far I'm very happy with them, FWIW.

I have 33K on my DWS' and all three letters are still showing in the tread. However, winter snow performance this winter is not as good as the last two winters. I didn't notice any degrade in snow performance the second winter, but I do this winter. They are not great in snow any more, although they are not bad either.

These tires would easily last me 60K, but I'll probably be replacing them before the next winter because I need reliable snow performance. Very satisfied overall with these tires and I probably will buy them again.

I'm considering buying a set of DWS tires in 235/40/18 size. After reading through a handful of pages in this thread, it seems like there is a mixed bag of results. I noticed that Continental revised the DWS tire recently with a higher load index (95 on the 235/40/18 size and 94 on the 235/45/17 size). Has anyone run either tire with the increased load index?

What info do you have that the load rating has been changed?
Seeing that the OE is 93, don't see that the rating will cause any concern especially with the DWS softer sidewall.

Last March I was shopping for Conti Extreme Contact DW tires in 245/40/18 size and Tire Rack had them on "close out". I contacted Tire Rack to see if they were discontinuing them and was told Continental was updating the load ratings on the DW and DWS tires. They were moving from a standard load rating to XL. The DW tires I bought (245/40/18) were 93Y. The new tire, the only difference being the load rating, is 97Y.

I don't know what the previous load rating of the DWS tire was vs. the current one of 95 in the 235/40/18 size, but I'm curious if this impacts the softer side wall or any negative aspects people have experienced with this tire on the TL/TL-S.

If you look on Tire Rack, I believe the 235/45-17 is still a 94W as originally produced, and the 245/40-18 comes in 2 ratings, 93Y standard load and 97Y extra load. One reason for the XL is that Audi can't use a standard load tire in this size.

I'm not an overly aggressive driver doing burnouts or spinning donuts. Those days are long gone for me in my 20's - I'm almost 37 with my first born on the way. I do however have a lot of hilly driving.

Having said that, I haven't driven the Conti's any more harder than I have my Michelin's on other cars, driving the same hilly routes to and from work with the occasional long distance drive every 7 - 12 weeks. Michelin's outlasted these nearly 3 x 1. Here is a timeline of my experience with the Conti's.

Aug 30, 2011 - First set of 4s purchased, all wheels balanced & aligned

Jun 26, 2012 - Blew out front tire, ordered 2 new ones for the front. Moved one of the good front ones to the left rear due to uneven wear - all wheels balanced & aligned

Jan 14, 2013 - rears wore out completely - almost good enough to play air-hockey on with marginally visible uneven tread on the rears again, new rear tires installed and all wheels balanced & aligned.

When the rears were changed, the tire tread was so low, I couldn't do more than 45 mph on a rainy 500 mile drive. Worst driving experience of my life. And no it wouldn't be the tire place as I've been going to them since 2003 and not faced such problems until I started with the Conti's.

Now I noticing the front ones are starting to wear out again with rainy slushy slippage increasing.

In comparison, my wife's Lexus RX350 purchased in Dec of '08 still has the same Michelin's that the car came with originally. Though all 4 are coming up for change in late summer, I'm pretty certain the DWS will be up for a renewal again.

Granted we don't put in as many miles on her vehicle as we do on my TL and she's a less aggressive driver as well, but to go on 4+ years vs. 16 months on the DWS in similar driving terrain is an unbelievable difference. And she probably has more inner city hilly terrain miles than I do because she drives to and from her work / doing groceries etc. but me on the other hand have 1 round-trip to & from work.

My TL was purchased a month after her's and so under ownership for nearly the same duration, her car has 36K miles put on it and mine has about 58K, but to have gone through nearly 2 sets more (which are also wearing thin) is ridiculous.

They're great tires, don't get me wrong, I'm just not happy on how long they last.

Like avs007 said, even though I had them aligned when installed, tires showing signs of uneven wear. Because of this, I wouldn't be eligible for pre-mature wear discount due to "tires being incorrectly installed / aligned". But to have this happen twice in the last 3 years or so definitely makes you wanna raise an eyebrow.

I was very happy with my Continental DWS until this week. At 35k they started riding rough like they were out of balance. The tire shop said two had bad flat spots with one tire starting to separate. I have rotated these every 5k and drive 75% highway. No more Continentals for me, switching to Nitto's.

i love my DWS
i'm on the second set
no issues whatsoever
and they lasted longer than oem or avids i had before
the handling a bit loose due to softer sidewalls
other than that, i'm very happy with them
snow performance is outstanding for an allseasonal!

We have 4 sets of DWS in the family as we speak, recently Continental came out with the purecontact ecoplus, the RL needed some new tires so the 18" A-specs recently got installed with the purecontacts. Any one else thought about them?

Need expert advice/opinion on tires

Hi all, just bought a used 2006 TL with ~86k miles on it. The car came with Falken Ziex 512 with lots of tread still left on it. The handling is great but the tires are super noisy and the ride is super bumpy, which really bothers me! I am thinking of replacing the Falkens with the much quieter Michelins. I am a pretty safe driver and don't do any crazy stuff. I live in Michigan though and we get a fair amount of snow.

Any advice/suggestions?

Thanks!

Maximus - I recommend snow tires.

I really like my Michelins. They are good in the snow but in no way are they snow tires.

Read more of the thread if you were hoping the Pilot Sports A/S were smoother and great snow tires. If you don't care about super uber duber handling, look more to the Primacy MXM4 which will be much smoother and quieter than the Pilots or even the DWS will possibly match your described driving style better.
