High pitched, loud, whining noise in cold

Over the weekend I had to keep my car outside as we had some work going on in the garage. On Monday I turn on my car and notice there is a high pitch noise that changes with engine RPMs. At the same time the noise also changes when I turn the steering wheel.

I found this old thread: http://www.acura-tsx.com/forums/show....php?p=9154720

That thread suggests a power steering pump issue, which would make sense for the noise that accompanies my moving the wheel left and right, but would that also cause the noise that changes as the engine RPM changes?

I have an 04, 50k miles.

had same problem on my 04 TL..it was just an o ring on mine..they fixed it for free when i had my oil changed.. as far as the increase in sound with relationship to the rpms..maybe its just the pulley spinning faster..or something like that.. have em check that o ring..

It is a dollar part and will take you 10 minutes to change it...
This sounds like it IS your problem. Good luck!
I'm looking for the thread, but can't find it. Anyone else able to oblige?

Could it cause long term damage to drive on it for the next couple days?

lol I have the same issue, just happened to me the other day. Only happens when its cold outside. I thought it was the power steering fluid but my fluids are sufficient. Guess I'll change the o-ring and see what happens.

I just went to the dealership this morning. The rep told me they had already replaced the power steering hose from the recall the last time i brought it in, but it seemed like they didnt replace the O-ring. So they replaced it now and its time for the moment of truth.. which is to let the car sit outside for a good 5-6hrs in the cold, then start it up to see if the whining sound is still there. gl

It will not be whining...the o ring is that big of a deal. It gets brittle and stiff in the cold...allowing air to enter...check your reservoir after a drive...if you have bubbles...this is your problem.

Easy...and thanks for finding the thread melvin.
The only permanent damage might be to your brain from it being super friggin annoying.

I had picked up my car form the dealership after getting the power steering hose and o-ring replaced (recall).

The sound/whine is gone.

I was reading the TSB and it doesn't mention changing the Hose.

I'm going to be changing the O-Ring and I'll see if a new hose is needed. Maybe I should just do them both at the same time.
