Electrical gremlins around blower motor

I have gone through the various posts on the forums around diagnosing and resolving blower motor issues.


In my troubleshooting I saw voltage was coming to the motor, but when testing continuity at the motor I saw it was running positive ~5.56 rather than 0.


I replaced the transistor/resistor and it did resolve the issue for two trips and now it appears to have blown again. Here is the thing, as part of my troubleshooting and due to a bad part from the auto store I ended up replacing the motor itself as well. So that rules out the fact that the original motor may be clogged and causing an overdraw.


I also noticed that on both these trips the first turn of the key resulted in the car not starting. It didn't even make an attempt to start, turn the key - dash lights up then nothing. Reset and turn the key fires right up no problem.


I imagine there is something going on with the electrical system but not sure what. Stumped, any thoughts before I sink even more money by taking it to the shop.

What year is your TL? What were the specific symptoms that you were troubleshooting?

It's a 2004 TL that had intermittent working heat/air. I can still get intermittent blower motor engagement using the original transistor but the brand new one that worked great at first is now not working at all.

It sounds like there is a problem with the blower motor circuit. You should check the system for a diagnostic trouble code using this method.



Do this and report back. I can pdf print out troubleshooting steps. If you are already measuring continuity, then you can easily perform the troubleshooting procedures.

It does report back "S" according to the notes above.

That's a problem with the blower motor motor circuit as expected. You sound pretty handy and should be able to troubleshoot this. Check out the attachments. Let us know what you find!

Following up

It has been a while but this has turned into a saga. I followed the troubleshooting guide which resulted in me buying a new Nav unit, per the guide.


After ripping away half the car to swap that it turned out to not be that. I have since assembled the car and began conversations with the local Honda/Acura expert and he was shocked at the level of effort I have put into tracking down the issue. In all his years it has been 90% the Blower Motor transistor/resistor and other times the motor itself with a melted harness.


After talking we agreed the best option was to repurchase the Blower Motor transistor/resistor but this time from Acura rather than a non-OEM part from the local parts store. Viola! It worked...for two trips. I just fiddled around again and I am stuck again.


I am assuming something is blowing the fuse built into the Blower Motor transistor but I can not figure it out as the motor itself is brand new and the harness looks fine. Anybody seen anything like this?
