2006 TL - Hissing noise from steering

Hi everyone,

There is a hissing noise coming from under the dash (close to steering column).
I can hear it only when I turn right or left but very slowly, almost not turnning but still pushing towards left or right (puting presure on the power steerig system).
You may have to roll up the windows, turn AC and radio off in order to hear it.

First time I asked the technician about it, he said he never encountered it (23 years old guy, probably just got the job...lol).
When I went back to pick it up, they said the noise is normal, they also looked to another 2006 TL and seemed to be the same.

Has anyone had this before or still has it? These guys are killing me with 'compared to other similar model and it's normal'.

Thanks.

Catalin

Did you have the RECALL install of new power steering hoses taken care of?

Yes, but that's not related to this issue. Besides the noise is coming from inside the car right under the steering column.

I always start with the basics- make sure the system is functioning correct before digging in farther is why I asked. The dealer is Supposed to check for recalls any time you are in the shop but.....

Have YOU checked another TL to listen for the noise?

The noise is not consistent, it comes and goes.
Even if I see the noise on another TL-2006, I will still not sleep well in the night.

If they screwed up on designing the steering system, I would try to get them fixing it. Honeslty I always hoped that by paying a bit more (tl versus altima) I would get better service.

This is my 6'th car (second brand new) not mentioning about the rental vehicles I've driven and I never heard this noise.

Thank you 240sz.
Could you please elaborate a bit?
I can not go back to the dealer and just demand to get that replaced, they already diag-ed it and found it normal. Hence I will be very convincing and try to avoid looking them like fools, if you know what I mean.

Thanks again.

Catalin

PS.
In the mean time I am looking on the internet for hissing / cable reel / steering but have not found to much so far. I'll keep searching.

tell them there is a hissing from the steering column between the wheel and the cover. and rattles when you turn locked both ways. the cable reel a strip of ten wires that are in a reel like container and supplies power to your sterring controls and air bag.

Firstly, dealer needs to see the rattle or whatever issue in order for them to start the work, they never service the car based on your story/demand - as I mentioned.
When I said elaborate a bit, I was expecting a kind of technical and logical explanation about the hissing coming from the cable reel.

Secondly, how can a strip of 10 wires make that hissing when you turn the wheel?
Keep in mind, as I mentioned on my first post, I don't even need to actually turn the wheel, but the hissing is still there as long as I hold the wheel towards one direction and I put put pressure on the steering system.

Did you actually have that hissing under the conditions I mentioned, and you got it fixed by replacing the cable reel?

I get this hissing noise when I turn my steering wheel almost all the way to the left. It seems like its coming from the outside though. Besides the annoying noise I've never had a problem.

I notice the hissing sound too in my recently purchased 2007 TL (certified pre-owned) .. left it with the dealer today ... he said he will have to check with another same year TL.

Ok I got this problem fixed now.

The dealer did some diagnostics and said it seemed like a problem inside the steering column rack .. and replaced it (for free under warranty). Since he could not open up the sealed steering column rack, he said most likely some air was entering in and causing the fluid inside was getting aerated due to this. And that was the sound .. the air entering in. Thats the theory anyway .. but the problem is gone now for me.
