'07 TL Type S Rev limiter issue

Hey guys.
Kinda new to the forum.
The TL i s my daily driver.
It is a 2007 TL Type s Auto with 90,000 on it now.
I got it at 75,000 and was told the trans has been serviced once. I know it is due again.

The issue is if you go WOT in 1st, about 5500 RPM it will feel like it hits the rev limiter for a few seconds and then it will skip past and keep going to the normal rev limiter. It does it every time.
Not even sure if it is the rev limiter, but it for sure feel like it.
It won't do it in any other gear.
It will do it with both VSA on or off and in manual or auto mode.

Anybody have anyideas.

Thanks

That is near the VTEC engagement point (4900?? - Justinspace, where are you?).

I'd check the VTEC solenoid and oil pressure (or whatever) to make sure the car is engaging the VTEC cam lobes properly.

Hi, I am wondering if anyone figured out what the issue is, I have a 2007 RL ASPEC and recently started experiencing the same issue, if I floor the pedal, it will seem like it's hitting a rev limit at 5500 to 6000 rpm, and then after a couple secs goes past it to the actual rev limit. This only occurs in 1st gear, all other gears will hit actual rev limit. This is super annoying, please help me.

Where does it read on the dipstick?

I would think you'd have to be quite low for this to happen.

You are correct my friend, Dip Stick was veryyyy low, I had to add 1.8 quarts to get it upto the right level. All is well now. Thank you.

Sorry but that's BS. If the oil level was low enough to cause vtec to not engage you would have engine damage. While it's not ideal, 1.8 quarts low is not enough. You will experience the problem again.

Hmm... Well VTEC was engaging in all other gears...... it engaged in first as well, but not quite through the entire power band. After topping it up, I have opened up the throttle many times, no issues. VTEC in every Gear including 1st with zero issues. Mind you, I haven't had a chance to try vtec in 5th yet, but 1,2,3,4 are a go

Bump...

I am having this same issue in my 2007 TL-S with 124k. If I punch it in 1st, at 5500rpm the rpms briefly encounter a limiter similar to redline, then keep climbing to 7k. The car has started to do the same in 2nd gear on occasion. The odd thing is I put the car in sport shift mode and accelerated slowly in 1st all the way to 7000 rpm without this occurring. I will try to take a video tonight.

My oil is at the full level on the dipstick, so I don't think that is the issue. A 2x3 with Redline D4 was done about 10k ago, and the trans shifts fine while accelerating normally. No CELs to speak of. Alternator recently was replaced though.

several things could goes wrong here.

1. Check APP sensor
2. Check MAP sensor
3. If your car is AT then it could be the Transmission range switches is on the way out.

^Agree with the suggestions of the APP, MAF and Transmission range switch. I'd order all 3 and replace them.

All trans switches are 8k miles old, replaced when I did the 2x3. Doesn't an APP sensor cause the car to run roughly? I haven't noticed any abnormal idling, but recently did get the Tighten Gas Cap error on the MID. I don't see how this could be EVAP related though.

Here's a video of the problem.

1. APP bad symptom include weird acceleration aka hesitation during WOT (pedal is push to the floor but throttle only register half the input) this is more noticeable during high temp. My TL does it when I move to Houston but after I replace the APP its does not occur again (NO CEL was given).

2. MAP sensor can goes bad and cause your computer not compute the amount of air being intake correctly therefore take a while for the computer to figure out what to do next. (I had similar experience in my Lexus and it turn out to be bad MAP sensor).

3. AT range switch is NOT 3rd &4th switches, this is the sensor tell the car computer what gear is the car currently in and is it safe to down shift/ up shift. Bad sensor can cause hesitation during WOT and irregular shift, You can check the sensor by slapping the gear into trip-tronic mode and do a WOT if the sensor is bad your gear indicator display will flash. (My TL did that and I had to replace the range switch) also if you using pedal or push the shifter into + the car sometime won't up shift and it will bounce off the rev limiter.

It seems as if your car is bucking in the video.....have you checked your engine mounts? Side and front engine mounts are most prone to failure. Your side engine mount is right by your windshield wiper fluid and drive belt. 90 degree triangle shape below metal bracket.

I'm not saying that's the issue....I don't think the engine banging against the firewall and flopping around under load would contribute to rev limit issue. At first I think it's your oil level but you said it's full. Are you sure?

VTEC Solenoid? lol.

Hey guys! Sorry to bring up and old threat but I've been having no luck with the problem I'm having with my 08 TL Auto Base and I'm hoping I can get some suggestions on this threat. So my TL will not rev past 2000-2200 rpms when in 5th gear. It shifts perfectly fine through all the gears and it accelerates like new. The car runs perfectly fine except for this 5th gear problem. It's as if there's a review limiter that will not let it past 2200 rpms. I just tried replacing the APP Sensor last night and it didn't make the car a little more responsive (could be because I tightened the throttle cable a little) but it still has the same problem. I'm going to try and return the APP Sensor today. Any suggestions on what problem could be? A fuse maybe? Solenoid?

P.S. the CEL is not on and there are no codes being thrown

How's your oil level and transmission fluid level?

WHy return the App sensor? I'd just keep it installed in there.

it's odd that it's only a 5th gear problem. if it were the APP, then it would display problems in all gears

Oil and tranny fluid levels are good. I'm going to drain and refill both here in a week or so. And there's no reason to keep the app sensor in there considering the other one is perfectly fine. That's $170 I could spend on other parts to fix the problem I'm having

it's almost like there's not enough fluid pressure in the transmission.. ya know

Yeah, it's very strange. But replacing the app sensor was suggested to me by a few people so I went ahead and did that but no luck. I barely notice the problem with my 5th gear but now that I've noticed it I just want to fix it lol

I've gone up to 100 and shifted into 5 and it just stays at 2200ish rpms. When I have it in D the car will stay in 4th gear even when it's supposed to sgit to 5.. but since I don't typically drive super fast I don't really notice it too much. I'd still like to get this problem figured out

Definitely not a major problem I don't think so I'm not in a huge rush to fix it but I don't want to figure it out

I'll look into it. I'm not too mechanically inclined though... How would I go about checking the oil pressure and Tranny fluid pressure?
