Lost trust in my RDX....talk me down or verify my thoughts
Hey guys,
In the last 500 miles my 2015 RDX has had 2 breakdowns. The VVT took out the alternator and had to be towed and the EGR valve went out.
I am at 167k and the is on the bleeding edge maintenance wise. Nothing lagging at all. Have been planning on taking it to my retirement (5-10 years out)
I have a 14 hour drive coming up next weekend and don't trust it today. If I am going to replace it it will be before the trip.
Need either talked down cause I am looking at it too emotionally or a "dude its time" call to cut bait
What does the hive say?

Looking for some tough love then?
That isn't high mileage for an Acura.
Were you already aware the VVT oil leak could wipe out the alternator? A simple visual inspection could have headed that off - just sayin'.
The EGR valve is a sub-$200 part. Replacing it involves a 12mm socket and about fifteen minutes.
I'd say you are succumbing to internal drama. imho

2014 front wheel drive Tech here. Two years ago (at about 166,000 miles) I had an oil leak that killed my alternator; it cost me $1800 (that includes 2 nights in a motel, because it happened to me while I was on the road.) It was not caused by variable valve timing, so far as I could tell. It was not caused by variable cylinder management, as I have had a VCM Tuner since around 118,000 miles (I bought the car in 2020 with 116,000 miles on it.) I don't drive as much as I used to (I only have 175,000 miles on it now), although I will take a several thousand mile trip later this year. A look at the engine compartment from time to time, along with careful maintenance (as you have mentioned) leaves me feeling comfortable with it still. But that feeling is variable for each us.
I would say get out there and get your hands dirty (do a thorough inspection, do a lot of reading here, give your car some love.) If you still don't trust it, it may be time to get a newer used car (I would not buy a new car these days, and cost is only one consideration.)
I think your car is able to go the distance, but only you can tell!

I don't always make new friends, but when I do, I like to make them using parts from old ones.
