, have to rush now and ditch the worn down Conti DWS on my type S wheels and install the studded snow tires. My original intent was to do that after I come back from my trip to Toronto but with the snow forecast for this week I think I wont be taking that chance. Not sure if you mentioned, but do you have a dedicated snow wheel/tire set up, Meko?
No I don’t have a snow set-up, or winter set-up.
The only 2 necessary reasons you would be looking in to are
Question 1 - Either good take off from a dead stop/parking lot/ and etc
Question 2 - Or, not getting the car out of control on highway and having a nice traction on ice
Winter tires are for ice and better traction on light snow. Just better.
Snow tires are for driving on actual snow. They have bullets on the threads.
Answer 1 (take off) – Not the purpose of snow tires. It won’t get you out like an AWD does (which many people assume of). They say it will help you at least. No it will not unless you have snow tires (not winter), snow tires with bullets on them. Otherwise if winter tires help me take off better once it touches the pavement. All-Season will do as well.
Alternative 1 – 225 is perfect in my case. I don’t have Subie, I shovel no matter what, and after that point every tire will get me moving. With 225? Higher percentage.
Width has more importance at a dead stop than the threads. The first kick.
Answer 2 (driving) – Are you driving on snow all the time? No. Even if you did, your best choice will be snow tires with bullets. Can you rock those bullets all the time? In General? No and you know why.
Highways are usually open. Takes one night to get all the snow out. What’s left? Watery snow. (That’s what I see most of the time in Boston), next day and the day after, it’s all wet on the roads.
Is your winter tires good for wet? Depends on thread right? My All-Season tires have proper thread for rain/wet roads. Don’t remember of seeing winter tires with rain threads on them.
Alternative 2 – Once you slip, it’s gone. Chance of slipping on snow? Very high if you don’t know how to drive. That very very very minimal difference between All-Season and Winter tires will not determine of slipping, your driving will.
We are not talking about the difference of a summer tire vs. winter tire or changing your FWD in to AWD.
Does it really worth it in my case? No
I don’t have summer tires. If I did, would go with winter tires as separate set but you are like me as well. Daily.
I don’t see snow on the roads for 24/7, water more than snow is what I see. Wouldn’t want to listen winter tire noise all the winter on my 50 miles of commute every day. I still remember how bad it was in my dads Benz E320.
Btw, call it the RWD or it’s stupid traction control but, you see where the FX is parked at in the pictures I just posted. I shoveled the whole garage and with a…. what do you call those, 2 wheel shovel kart whatever, I mean it removed the snow the best it could, unlike hand shovel.
I moved the Benz to the spot where FX sits on.
After I cleared the front, wanted to take the Benz to the spot ahead. Car didn’t move. Had to reverse slide to the straight pavement (street) and gain speed.
My dad doesn’t look at prices had one of the best Michelin Winter tires on the car.
DPW guys work like crazy here. I just don’t see a good reason to pay for another set, which will give me road noise, not good in wet, and not perfect on snow like snow tires with bullets.
It’s mandatory in some Europe countries. Because of the small roads, because of the quiet mountain roads which you need snow tire for sure, not even winter tire. Driving on snow. Brother from Switzerland sent some nice pictures, I’ll post them on when I get home.
Here, roads are big as hell and easy to shovel, and all we use is highways most of the time.
I remember in 1999, we went to skiing in Turkey ,we drove one car with dads partner which had Audi A4 1.8T b5, we needed snow tires to hit the hills. Or you need chains to pass. It’s not like here in US, many roads in Europe that just impossible to shovel all of them. The roads we drove on had at least 1ft of snow.
So knowing all of those makes me laugh at people who throws winter tires on in USA. Unless you are Anil, that think he will race and throws summer tires on a different set and

Not sure if he does that but...
Sooooooo Faruk , I say go with winter tires

Seriously, just buy a nice Michelin All-Season tires. It’s not the bigger/deeper threads that puts well performance in snow. Trust Michelin
Go with 225 as well; you’ll have softer steering too and faster acceleration hehe
225 Michelin All season will make everything perfect for you. Believe me
Forget winter forget snow. Both waste of money here. Not sure if you could use snow tires here anyway. Using chain is illegal because it could harm the roads…. Snow tires would do the same thing

I have a dedicated snow setup and I love it. I can vouch that snow tires are noticeably grippier than all-seasons, however, if you're careful, there's nothing wrong with running all-seasons in snowy winter conditions.
btw, Meko, are you coming to the Great Falls meet this year? If so, I'll call and wake you up so you don't oversleep this time...

At first I was going to post "TLDR" then i said fuck it let me see what you had to rant about
Snow tires may not be for everyone and the way you are talking you sound like how I did 5 years ago i.e. a good set of all season tires are good enough for winter as long as you are not acting like an idiot on the road.
Snow tires do not make you feel that you have feet of God or you have AWD, as ebelp said it just gives you the added confidence and grip. Pair that with sensible driving and the TL can drive through most blizzards unless the roads have more than 6 inches of snow.
I drive down from NH to MA at 4 AM in the morning and 9/10 times the roads/highways are not even touched at that time and thats where the snow tires really help.
Also, dont knock it till you try it
My intro to snow tires was a fluke where I picked up a cheap set of steelies with snow tires on them through CL for dirt cheap, just for laughs and giggle and became a true believer after commuting on them for the first time.
NOW, this isnt an attempt to have you switch over to snow tires; good God no, as no one can ever win an argument with you
This is simply a comment pertaining to my personal experience with a dedicated winter set up.
BTW I just remembered, you'd be traveling to Westford, pretty sure you'll get to know a barely plowed route 3 in the morning quite well this winter

Ok in your case, then you should get another set of rims.
Othervise it's like doesn't worth it.
It's not a big difference to make me deal with changing tires, balance and alignment every winter and summer.

Really? It's bad on Rt3?
I'll use 93N then 495S hahaaaaaaa
But I take off for work at 8.30

I am going to buy J.'s advans that he took care of and use them for snow

Not sure if Morgan is coming. I haven't seen him around in a while. Yeah, come the day before to be safe...don't drive 7 hours to get to a meet at noon lol. It might get moved to Saturday the 11th. Drive down Friday evening, go to the meet Saturday, have dinner and drinks with everyone Saturday night, drive back to MA on Sunday.

Sounds good
You going to stop by Chip?
----
Faruk, seriously
If you going to keep replacing tires, buy another set of rims.
Lately, people are selling stockies for 200 something in BM
Othervise don't, I am serious. Remember last year we were not suppose to drive after 5pm. Before that I was doing delivery with MDX but friend was doing delivery with his e46 coupe, and his tires are just BS... They are there so the car drives.
I am not saying it would be safe as winter tires but, I am just on the part of whether worth it or not.
If you buy another set and you live in NH go to work at 5am... yeah
Do it
Any update on the suspension? What are your thoughts? Tein basis?
Hehe, buy an used MDX, FX is like a little girl. You could do everything with MDX, and won't even feel sorry lol
MDX keeps its value though. 2007, 50k, Top model with auto trunk and DVD. Private value is 22k (selling the MDX after winter, that's why we checked) we don't owe any money on MDX too.
If it was daily, I would say FX but...for winter beater MDX
--
Will update you later on about the meeting. I might stay in Manhattan at a friend so I could drive with you to Washington
BTW Anil will be here with a big change of update. That bish
Meh F it, FX is sexy. Buy a FX and a black one
And it's 60% rwd or something. You'll have more fun, just don't try to go over a deep soft snow haha

MEKO, are you posting snow pics, just for me??????
I'm not wanting snow because that means my Stingray gets tucked away for the Winter. I drove her today in 33 degree weather (but no snow).
A buddy of mine who does weather on the ABC affiliate in town said it's going to be a long, cold winter in Kansas City..........damn it.

Come on Steven, you know some powerslides with that Stingray would look lovely in snow

Will you be driving it in cold weathers too?
Only thing I feel sorry for my TL is the cold starts in the morning

MEKO, the steering wheel you pictures is made by someone else, which was over $1,000.
I ordered mine from someone else. The one I ordered looks better, I think.
I ordered mine from someone else. The one I ordered looks better, I think.
Well, his C7 is the only exotic we have in this section lol
I am cutting the bottom of my steering wheel
I don't have new pics but I have some old interior. Day I did the wax and stuff
Car is so filthy, rain stains everywhere. I see friggen black lines on the hood
I am serious
But, I ordered cree orange fogs for the inspires too.
Like the ones in upper fogs, nice and bright. Same ones
and
Ordered Morimoto 5k bulb
CBI Osram works great on FX, dad wants it too, so I keep it there.
Plus, oke it's white but it still has light yellowish when you stare at the xenon.
I want something closer to blue.
So will test 5k Morimoto
I said I was happy with Osram SVS on my TL
But not anymore. Seriously it's not that bright, I don't know, I still don't see anything under rain.
It's too yellow, way more than stock ones.
And it's not powerful, still when BMW comes near me, it covers the road, especially these new leds are bright and bluish, makes me jelly
Soooo, let the CBI do it's job on FX and with TL I go with look from now on, don't care about lumen
Even with SVS it's still not that bright compared to other cars.
At night at totally dark, it's amazing but not in city, not in rain, not when other new cars around.
I remember someone saying Miorimoto 5k is a little bit more closer to blue than Osram CBI is... so hoping it will come out just like what I wanted.
----------
License plate bulbs on FX from superbrightleds went bad, ordered new ones from autoillumination or something, yeah that website.
First time, sooo will see
oh and waiting for HFPC
check engine light went away but..

Edit: Got any pictures Steven?
or let's just wait and see it on the car hehe

Does Jeremy even celebrate Christmas?

Do FL people know how it feels? hahahaha
Feeling of opening all the window shades, and inside of the house lighting up orange because of the street light reflections, and sitting by the warm fireplace, and watching Christmas movies.
Home alone

Damn I miss winter but no snow no winter
