TL Diet 2.0/Track Car Build - Roll Cage Pg 51

I have been debating the same thing about tires. Whether a 255 is worth it over a 245 both price and performance/weight wise.
Here is what I posted in my thread.
Trying to decide what tire size and which tires to go with for my next set. Looking for a street/track tire. Here is what I am trying to decide between.
Size 255/35/18 from tirerack
1. Dunlop Star Spec $1012
2. Hankook R-S3 $1032
3. Toyo R1R $880
4. Michelin Super Sport $1068
Size 245/40/18
1. Dunlop Star Spec $872
2. Hankook R-S3 $788
3. Toyo R1R $720
4. Michelin Super Sport $1032
5. Nitto NT05 $752 from discounttire-tirerack dsnt sell nitto
First thing that pops out is how much more expensive the 255 tires are over the 245. The R-S3 price for 255 seems really high compared to the 245 price. The michelins are about same price regardless of size.
Queston is a 255 worth the extra price? Will it even perform better on a 8.5 wide rim?
I think I am leaning more towards the R-S3, NT05, or R1R's. I am thinking the R-S3 in 245 cause 255 is expensive, NT05 don't come in 255 so only 245 for those, and the R1R in 255 since the price isn't that much more.
I am currently on 235/45/18 hankook R-S2. Those only cost me $350 shipped. Been very happy with them.

Villo, your insight definitely benefitted this discussion!! And Inaccurate, keeping that weight down in all areas of the car is definitely something all road racers are looking to do! And Villo's right too, its all about balance and some comprise must be made sometimes...for example, like Villo said, do I want to spend the $$$ on super sticky tires that might only last a couple track events? Or spend less and sacrifice those extra .1 seconds per lap on tires that'll last longer?
But where no compromises should be made is in safety...for example, should I install a full roll cage that weighs about 70lbs?? Hmm...I don't have one now, and probably won't ever, but it would be excellent peace of mind! Especially since it doesn't take much to roll out there...
So Inaccurate, MSR Houston is just south of Pearland...let's shoot for a track weekend in September!!

I just looked up the prices myself on tirerack because I just KNOW those prices are waaaay off, but then I realized you're buying 18" tires not 17"....and that right there is your number one problem! 255/40/17 R-S3's are just $634 for a set...I definitely suggest you go with 17" wheels...its cheaper all around...AND its a shit ton lighter!!! (Inaccurate would appreciate that one! ). And you can get those NT05's in 255/40/17....but I'd personally stick with the R-S3...having tracked with both of them...
If you are going down to a 17 why not just make it 15".

My 18" ssr wheels only weigh 17 lbs each. I would not go down to 17 based on looks alone. I would lose money also considering I got my ssr wheels new for under 1200. If I bought ssr in 17 it would cost me around 2 grand. I was asking about tires, not wheels.
If you are going down to a 17 why not just make it 15".
If you are going down to a 17 why not just make it 15".
Thirdly, so you just asked about tires, wonderful...you do know the size tire *depends* on your size wheel?? Cool story bro, glad we had this talk and glad you took my lighthearted jab about you going down to 17" wheels/tires like a champ instead of getting all pissy and suggesting going to something as unreasonable as a 15"...

A little sensitive there chief?? Hahaha And who said anything about going down to 17" for looks alone?? Definitely not this guy, so get your facts straight...I said *tires* would be lighter and cheaper...looks was *not* mentioned...secondly, you complain about how expensive your tires will be, I suggested a legit alternative, the price you pay for tires alone would offset the cost of new 17" wheels in a couple sets.

I am the one who said about going down to 17 for looks. I was talking about my own car, and my preference, not someone elses or what they want.
I was not complaining about price. I was asking if the price is worth it for the performance gain from going from 245 to 255. I have enough money to buy either.
I would rather get an answer from someone with a little more brain power like inaccurate or villa. You obviously are no help.
Saying cool story bro is so lame and such a troll comment.
Wait the size tires depend on the wheel size no way bro.

i dont mind going 16" with a NO lip setup....an 18" with lip looks like 17" and a 17" NO LIP look like 18"....
i honestly dont mind going 16" coz you will be in the 28-32lb range per corner without having to get tires shaved....if you get tires shaved, you will be ~25odd lbs per corner which i think is awesome considering the stock rims only weigh that much !!!

I thought about it a little more, 17's will be slightly heavier but will handle better in corners. I guess it all really depends what u want out of your car.

I often wondered about the rear view mirrors... Not even considering the weight saved just the aerodynamics...

I think you loose the auto tilt functionality when you delete the front OEM seats and replace by racing seats.....in that case this can turn out to be an awesome mod as you can loose the motors, wiring, the buttons in the dash....which will all be like 8-10 lbs removed....

You guys are starting to go crazy over this diet stuff.
For all of you hardcore TL dieters...what do YOU weigh? Any fat asses doing the TL diet? Lol
I mean, Abercrombie jeans have to save you what, .5 lbs over the thicker Gap denim? No belt saves you...1 lb? Less hair gel, .02 lbs? iPod Nano over an iPhone, 1 lb?
Edit: No offense to anyone. I'm half way joking here. Just curious.

^I knew you or Inacc was going to answer with something like that.
Hell watching Inacc's Camaro video, I noticed his shirt was pressed but his cuffs were loose. And I thought "Kidding me right, cufflinks must of weighed too much. Needs to order some CF ones"

Regarding the rest of the comment - This is not as much of a joke as you think. It is real. I have never mentioned it on the forum but I do get down to this level. Years ago, I started wearing moccasins that weigh just 5 ounces (no soles) instead of normal shoes for this exact reasons. It bugged the hell out of me about how much my normal shoes weighed. So I shopped around (Zappos ) and found the moccasins. This was about 3-1/2 years ago and I still wear moccasins today to save weight.

With racing seat, you better be slim. Racing seats are narrow.

That's crazy man. But I could see it. Big difference between say 5oz mocs and 5 lb Doc Martins.

I am running the Hankook Ventus V12's in 255/35/18 and I am very happy with them, both in traction and noise. They were pretty cheap at $750 shipped for a set of 4 and seem to be holding up pretty well considering my power level. They are heavy at 24.5 lbs per tire or almost an even 50 lbs with rim and tire together. Worth looking into with the $80 off tire rack is offering right now, basically free shipping. I also found Just Tires mounts and balances for $15 per tire, instead of the $45 per Wheel works wanted.
