Also some rasp...which I think is why he's coming up with the V3 also.

I wish i wasn't so ignorant on these things... I bought my TLS in 07 and now that my warranty is almost up, Im browsing the archives to look at some must need mods.. This right here is one of the most specific and immediate ones I'd like for sound and that extra power... If i buy this here, is there anything that i MUST buy to compliment it... I don't want my car to sound too loud, but a nice low growl will be nice...any advice would be appreciated..thanks

No, there is nothing else you must buy to go with this. This will come with the gaskets and hardware that you need to put it on. It will not make the car loud, as people have said repeatedly in this thread.

Actually, it's been said that it will not affect sound at all, really.

My recommendation for what you're looking for that will fit the bill is a stage 3 setup. Can all be done at one time when you have the car on the lift and will make you HAPPY. Nice low growl at low rpm's but not loud at all...no drone or rasp.

Jpipe out, remove 3rd cat, replace stock resonator with dynomax one. You'll thank me later.

I think if I HAD to pick 3 MUST have mods for the TL:

1 Lower it
2 comptech short shifter AND removal of slave checkvalve (if you're stick)
3 Jpipe (pending my actual opinion once installed)

I would love to lower my car but i live in NY, if you only knew what this winter did to these streets... I do have stick, never thought about a short shifter (will look into it)....maybe that will resolve my 3rd gear problem that i've been trying to figure out for the longest...But as soon as you install your Jpipe, i'd like to read the results...

BTW, dont want to get off topic but what kind of tires do you have on your car...those look sick

Hey rockstar you'll love the j-pipe once you get one. I managed to get one today off a membere here and put it on and all I have to say is holy crap the car sounds and moves like a beast. I'm a 5at type s and peformance-wise all I have is the atlp exhaust and now the j-pipe and am truly impressed with it. Even in sport shift mode the car is totally different.

Mind you my atlp is non-resonated too and it's not raspy at all or sounds like a rice burning civic lol. As for the pcds, I don't think I'll do those cause I'm hearing mixed feelings on them. Some say their great others are saying you'll get a smell in the car and it'll get raspy a little bit.

Yeah, the PCD's had a mixed review. I don't want to complicate things and I think I'll be happy enough with the extra oompff the jpipe'll give me. I especially liked the review that said it made the car feel "lighter", which means...after the initial thrill, I will go back to normal and hopefully be able to net some mpg's.

i'll be the guinea pig here with the v3 pcds...i'll let you all know how it ends up regarding rasp/smell.

my setup is as follows :

p2rTBS>aemv2>v3 pcds>v3 jpipe>xlr8 non res quad exhaust

worse case scenario, i'll throw a resonator/muffler on the exhaust to help tame the rasp/sound.

Dynomax makes a great sound!

Either way, yes, please keep us posted. I would have been the guinea pig too but didn't want to drop that much money on this at once. Plus, I'm stock other than stage 3 mods.

yeah i'm not sure if i want a straight thru muffler or square shaped. i hear the squares have more packing material so it will tame the sound better...but i also think about the fact that the straight thru's are...straight thru...so they won't restrict anything. maybe i'm just splitting hairs here, we'll see what happens after install.

Cant install my j-pipe

I have tried everything but air tools. Do I have to use air tools to get off the old j-pipe? I used pb blaster and wd40 with no luck. I bought a new craftsman socket set to be sure I had the best tools and not one of the 9 bolts will budge. Is there a trick to getting them off? Or should I just take my car to an exhaust shop?

I used a breaker bar, and agreed; they were tough to get off.
took me all day.
the car being jacked up and lying on my back didnt give me much room to work with.
at one point i used the breaker bar with my foot and just stepped into it.

I had to use a torch to heat up/expand the bolts in order to get the stock jpipe off. no amount of pb blaster would be enough to penetrate the seized pieces.

I didn't want to put too much "oomph" into it with hand tools, in fear that i would snap something.

heat bolts and then quickly turn em after they get scorched. came off super easy.

Heating them is the best way to get any exhaust bolts off. you'll also might have to bang down the j-pipe alittle bit to get it loose.

Aren't the j-pipe's installed with nuts and bolts? If they snap off, so what? The new pipe comes with all new hardware. I agree, a torch is one of the best investments when it comes to getting old hardware off. After trying to get shocks off my parents old Suburban for an hour I went to town and got an acetylene and oxygen torch for about $40. Ten minutes after getting home the shock was off!

I just had the j-pipe installed after I failed to do so and all I can say is it is very impressive. It has a slightly deeper tone to it and it feels awesome.

I'm sure an air impact would make it a lot easier. I struggled all day yesterday with one of the nuts trying to remove my stock j-pipe. 5 came off fine, and 1 was a b*tch.

Mine came in today and I installed it tonight. Beautifully finished and a perfect fit. Noticeable increase in mid range power, less noticeable up top. Only down side was two of the nuts that connect the j-pipe to the exhaust stripped out. I was using a 1/2" drive socket wrench and I'm not exactly buff. I'm wondering if they were actually grade 8 hardware since I've put waaaaaaay more torque on smaller bolts before without stripping. I've already contacted Richie to let him know he may have got a bad batch of hardware from his supplier. Or who knows, maybe I've gotten a lot stronger without realizing it and just dork torqued it too much?

Richie already got back to me! Like I suspected, his supplier seems to have screwed up on his hardware. Richie has offered to send me some old stock (high quality) hardware. His reputation for great customer service is well deserved!

Let me know if you guys have any issues with the nuts. My supplier switched factories a few months back. They haven't had any complaints other than mine. I have plenty of hardware in stock.

For the record, the new j-pipe with stock everything else sounds just a bit deeper than the stock pipe and is only a tad louder. The only way I noticed it was louder was while driving with the radio off and even then it was barely noticeable. These are the types of mods I love, where the only down side is the cost. I hope the new V3 PCD's are this great.

I'm SOOO looking forward to getting this on!
Also, I will check my bolts...I'm assuming the quality ones will be stamped with "8" on them?

Two thumbs up for being a great manuf./vendor Richie...
