Removing Resonator on Stock exhaust (Summary Post #1 & #1811)
#1441
Just did stage 1 with ATLP Jpipe and race pipe on a 07 type S. I cannot say what made the most difference in regards to sound since this was all done at once but am very happy. Just slightly more aggessive sounding and IMOP how the type S should of come from the factory.
I would be really interested in decibel differences for all exhaust mods compared to stock. Anyone have any actual test results? DB meters are not that much money. Seems like lots available for $50-200 on ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Noise-Sound-...3A1%7C294%3A50

I went to have my mid-muffler removed today, but the muffler guy - after listing to my "I want more tone, not loud" explanation - strongly suggested removing the resonator rather than the mid-muffler. I went with his suggestion and found the result to be subtle, but noticeable when I 'get on it'. Not bad, cost a whopping $35 ;-)

What are the cons to mid muffler removal?
ok so what are the pros and cons of removing the mid muffler, well especially the cons?
I really don't want a fat can sound, or a loud drone. I want g35 loudness or less, that is why I was wondering about strictly doing the resonator and nothing else.
What about etesting, will it still pass it with mid muffler removal?
Horsepower gain or loss, with mid muffler removal?
rusting considering I live in canada?

the mufflers has nothing to do with the emissions, thats the cats job. I am now on stage 3, and for the delete, I got my local shop to tigweld using stainless steel pipe, thats essential in a wet area (like chicago!). The resonator (Dynamax) will probably last 2-3 years according to my muffler guy. The sound is a nice deeper tone, and you dont really hear the real change until you step on it. Definitively no coffecan on a civic sound! I agree the resonator delete is what makes the sound difference but can highly recommend putting in the dynamax instead of straight pipe, I say just do it, its totally what the car should sound like stock!

My "muffler tech" advised that it wouldn't make a difference at all. lol... I told him to do it anyways. Stage 3 is perfect! I can't even tell that I did anything during light acceleration and cruising. But give it some gas, and it's true colors comes out. It almost sounds like the car is packing an additional two cylinders. I couldn't ask for more. The best "inexpensive" mod for the car hands down.
BTW, the sound clips in this thread sound nothing like what I hear from my own car. So don't base your decision on these.

Any of you exhaust chop junkies think adding the Aero AR25 Resonator to a cat back system will add a little back pressure? I'm cat-less into the ATLP Base exhaust and the low end fell out. I want to quiet it down a bit and am hoping that the resonator will add just a bit of back pressure, too.

I was quite happy with stage3 at first but nowadays, it seems so quiet. Its almost as if its reverting itself back to stock. Anybody know what might be causing this?
Its quiet to the point where I don't think its just me "getting used to it". Before, the "G35 tone" could easily be "extracted" with light throttle. Now I find myself wasting gas just to hear it.
*So tempted to just rip out the dynomax and slap in a straight pipe

Is the resonator more restrictive? Not gonna buy a cat. Don't want to spend the money and I'm proud of all the Global Warming inducing CO2 spilling into the atmosphere from my once ULEV TL.
#1454
just go with the aero, Ive had it on 3 exhaust setups and it cut sown the drone and made it sound a bit more aggressive..... giving back a little low end.

any one from montreal can tell me where to go to get my car to sound like a g35? the shops here are picky so i want to get it right the first time around..
ps to get the g35 sound, i just remove the resonator right? ill get info tomorow on what i can replace it with

k did stage 4 today, straight pipe from where the resonator was to the y pipe, it sound like a cross between a g35 and a newer M but just cruising you cant hear it. i love it, i did notice a slight loss on lowend though well at least it feels like it.

^^^ Do u have a sound clip?
Also, i went to meineke (spelling?) on 355 to see how much it was to remove the mid muffler, he quoted me 175 for 1.5 hours and a galvanized pipe. Although said he was sure it would take two hours. Is this what you guys are paying because it seems i'm getting ripped off.

Total rip-off. I paid a local Meineke 40 to remove the mid muffler and a few months later about 55 to replace the factory resonator with the dynomax.

Just to update i went to another Meineke in Gaithersburg about 10 minutes away from the first one, and they want 80 for it, using an aluminized pipe which he claimed is better than galvanized.

Compilation of all stages of exhaust resonator modification.
So I took the time and made this post so all of the new people don't have to go through 20 pages of discussion.
So far, there are 4 stages of this exhaust mod.
Stage 1.
Least noticeable in exhaust note increase.
Configuration:
Stock exhaust.
Remove mid-muffler. Replace with 2.5" straight pipe. Everything else remains stock.
Cost: Can be anywhere from $30-$60 w/aluminized pipping.
Stage 2.
A tad louder than stage one, a bit more pronounced tone.
Configuration:
Stock exhaust.
Remove mid-muffler. Replace with 2.5" straight pipe.
Remove stock resonator. Replace with Magnaflow resonator part# 10416.
Magnaflow resonator is a 14" long resonator, which dampens and changes the note of the stock exhaust a bit more, thus you get a bit more loudness/tone.
Cost: Magnaflow resonator costs around $60. Install ranges from $60 -$90 w/ aluminized pipping.
Stage 3.
(Tone result TBA)
Stock exhaust.
Remove mid-muffler. Replace with 2.5" straight pipe.
Remove stock resonator. Replace with Dynomax resonator part# WLK-24215.
Dynomax resonator is a 12" long resonator, which is a bit shorter and less dampening than the magnaflow resonator, thus it should give you a bit more loudness/tone than stage 2.
Cost: Dynomax resonator costs around $40. Install ranges from $60 - $90 w/aluminized pipping.
Stage 4.
Loudest setup out of all 3. Has a bit of a rasp, similar to M3 exhaust setup.
Stock exhaust.
Remove Mid-muffler. Replace with a 2.5" straight pipe.
Remove stock resonator. Replace with a 2.5" straight pipe.
Cost: Can be anywhere from $40 - $60.
Note: If you live in a climate that is prone to rain, snow, rust, Stainless steel pipping is highly recommended.
This also does not prevent you from passing smog, as it does not alter the characteristics of the catalytic converters, but it does not mean that this is street legal either as it does alter the stock setup of the exhaust.

Doing this will it give the exhaust a nice deeep tone, I dont like the high pitched ricer tones. I couldnt really tell from the videos my speakers kinda suck but it sounded like the stage 1 was more deep n when it got up it became more high pitched????? Is there anything I can do that delivers a more deep tone????
