Pro's & Con's to Removing Resonator and Mid Muffler

Can anyone tell me? From research it just looks like the resonator softens the sound of your pipe. If I put a straight pipe in to the Y to the mufflers, is there anything negative about this?

not really...if you eliminate both the mid muffler and the resonator your exhaust will get quite loud. its all about sound suppression

and if I do this and largen the piping from the cat to the y with 2.5 piping and from the y to the mufflers to 2.25 can I throw on the stock exhaust system again? I am asking becuase a muffler shop is doing this for $100 as a test to their new mandrel bending machine. My car is a lease and I dont know how the leasing company will appreciate the new exhaust system. And yes, I have always modded leased cars. Too addicting to stop!

i think the pipe from the cat until the split is already 2.25. it just gets pretty small after the Y. what i would do is just take the stock exhaust completely off and get the shop to start from scratch...if you dont want it very loud have 2.5 until the Y and then go 2 or 2.25

I remember reading that if you remove just the mid-muffler the sound is similar to the g35. Is this true? What do you think of that statement subinf?

I havent heard a TL with just the mid-muffler removed. I was messing around with mine when I was putting a few systems together but I dont think I played around with just the mid-muffler. I can attest that when I removed it once the magnaflows were in the tone got a hell of a lot better. I'd imagine the same happening with just the OEM mufflers and resonator on there.

I am think about trying this out. I called a shop and they quoted me $45 to remove the mid-muffler. They said if I didn't like the sound, while it was in the garage still they would install the muffler back for $15. Looks like I will try this. I just want a little more growl.....and if this adds it there is no need to change the cans or anything. $45 for the sound I want is perfect until I can save up the $ to get a comptech catback.

If you extract the resonator the tone will have a more profound growl.

A few different ways to go about this. If you want to be able to put the resonator in yourself go to a muffler shop and have them weld in flanges on either side of the resonator. Then have them make you a straight pipe with flanges welded in as well. That way you can alternate between the two if you want to make the car quieter for a long trip or something.

You can also just have them weld in the resonator and then if you ever decide you dont want it in anymore, the shop just cuts it out and welds in either the old resonator (if you saved it) or another one.
