Navi conversion really worth it?

I'm looking into putting the oem navi on my 06 tl. I'm getting a good deal $1800 installed. Question is, is it really worth the $1800? Or should I stick with my portable navi. Thanks for any input

I have navigation on my 08 TL, if you do get it installed, if I had that option I would make sure that I got some additions to it, like maybe a audio/video input, to add dvd playback capability? I just wish it did more. It is good, but not as good as some oem on cars now a days. Pretty sad, it's an 08. Other's have usb input, hard drives, other options. My two cents.

The navi was substandard in 2008 and is really outdated now. I would just stick with your Garmin and save the money.

If you just gotta have it, then they money might be worth is, but for purely navigation (as in getting you somewhere), then it is not IMO.

I think the navi just completes the look of the interior. Without it, it just doesn't look right... my

If I were to do it all over again, I would not have bought the TL w. a Navi., but I do agree with Jcaron9gt4 that the look sort of completes the interior of the car. I think the 07-08 interior w/o navi is a lot nicer then the 04-06 (I have 04).

Here is a similar thread with some replies that may help you..

No navi, but I was forced with it in the TL-S. I can never rely on it and using my ip4 is so much easier while driving.

Thumbs up

WhItE-aNgEl,

I say get it! Where RU located? Is the guy in Jersey City doing it? He might be able to give you the '07/8 system instead as he'll upgrade an '04/5/6 TL already equipped with Navi to the newer one for well under $1000. If you are going through with it, try to get the backup camera installed as part of the deal. Remember, with the Navi, you're getting Voice Control over the car's climate control system as well to boot. And with the '07/8 version comes about 3 times as many voice commands. Make no mistake about it, that screen is the heart of this car's interior!

My stance on this issue has always been that buying the car with the Navi in the 1st place makes sure you'll never be amongst the 1000's who didn't that wound up banging their heads into the wall afterward wishing they had. Why do you think the majority of used 3G TL's out there on the market for sale are and have always been non-Navis?

I completely agree...it really changes the look of the car's interior. I had no navi in my 05 TL for 4 years and now i cant believe i was ever without it. And if you have the chance, get the 07/08 navi installed instead. IT CAN BE DONE!. i wish i had known this before i did my navi conversion or i would have done the same thing and upgraded to the 07/08 system. Get the backup camera installed and the nav2go/DOMs unit to play video on the screen as well. This way you get more functionality out of your navigation screen. Its definitely worth it for entertainment and aesthetics.

^Has the availability of used 07/08 components gotten any better?

When I did my conversion, it was next to impossible to find them. I've done the conversion but I quickly grew to dislike the navigation. I use my iPhone instead of the TL's navigation. The stuff on the other pages are hardly ever used.

Now that I have the ECU, I would prefer a car pc and I am planning on using it for navigation. So for me, having both is the ultimate. I understand it's a big investment but at least I had 3 years between doing the conversion and now adding the computer.

But as everyone said, there is no comparison for the looks of a non-navi vs navi equipped TL.

^ I'd rather have that than my Nav. any day of the week. Our nav's nice looking and big, but it's outdated. Resolution is meh and so is the color on it. I wish getting a double din in there was easier!!

Save your $$$ and don't get an oem nav. When the nav originally came out in 04 it was ahead of its time, but now it will just make your car look dated with the low resolution. There are MUCH better aftermarket systems out there with better resolution and more features for less $$$.

neibur3, your setup look clean Where did you find the aluminum garnish without the cutout's for the volume?

Stick with your portable navigation. I just use my iPhone for nav. I barely use my OEM in-dash. My husband bought a navigation system that is integrated with his rear-view mirror for his G35 coupe and he barely uses that either.

$1800 for stock nav?? I don't know why anyone would get this. It's a nice-to-have if you're looking at used TLs, but no way I would buy this on a new car, let alone pay that much on a used car. It would immediately depreciate to $1000 or less over a non-navi TL. A Garmin cost $100 and gets you free updates multiple times a year. It doesn't look as nice, but the savings difference is not worth it unless you can get the whole setup for ~$750 or less IMHO.

PS - I probably should have clarified. I have navi and rarely use it. On my Android phone, all I have to say is "navigate to ________" and it pulls up turn by turn directions automatically. I only picked up a TL with navi because I got a killer deal, and resale value is higher.
