Very interesting conversation with my transmission builder on the TL

that's good to know.
so far, Ive been just over 1K miles since the replacement and the car just feels "new". I can't explain it, but the car just drives smoother. i definitely can feel it was better than before. I agree on the tach movement - you see it move, but you dont feel the shifts as much. quite an improvement if I may add.

Some say it is 28600-RAY-003, 28610-RAY-003
and you said 28600-P7Z-003, 28600-P7W-003
BTW, I got them with these part numbers 28600-RAY-003, 28610-RAY-003
I hope they are the correct ones for 2005 TL.

Hey, your DIY is really helpful but I was confused of the part numbers of the sensors.

the RAY part numbers are the "correct" ones. the ones I got (the P7Z and P7W) also work as those are what came up when i bought mine locally at an Acura dealer. inherently, either or will work and are technically the same.
you are fine.

Just an update after a couple weeks. Shifts are still great. One area it's really improved on is the downshifts using the manual mode. I rarely use it except when coming down the grapevine to maintain speed without hitting the brakes. Usually when it downshifts it's a hard jerk and really throws you forward. I usually try and rev match to minimize this. Now it downshifts very nice, it's hardly felt anymore. Also, gradelogic and automatic downshifting when exiting the freeway is seamless. I can see the tach move but barely feel the downshifts.
Interestingly, I was forced to run 89 octane in it the other day. Actually, not forced but I was offered a free tank but the card would only allow up to 89. There was a big reduction in power which resulted in the trans shifting hard. I guess it expects a certain power level at a certain throttle opening which results in hard shifts when the power level is lower than it should be. 5 minutes after filling up with 91 the power and smooth shifting was back.
Going to do my last drain and refill of Amsoil ATD for the next 100,000 miles pending the UOA results of this batch.

on another note.. I just went to my Lexus dealership and talked to a close acquaintance whose a service advisor there.. They are addressing line pressure issues by changing out the shift solenoids.. they definitely don't see the same problems we see.

im glad elegant type S put me back on to this thread. i first read it when I HATE CARS posted it up and completely didn't think it would've gotten this far. Alot to read!!!!! definitely should be a sticky and a mandatory preventative maintenance. i plan on buying the parts tonight and install next week. i'll throw in my 2 cents. right now im driving at 75K and shifts feel sluggish.

So for the guys with the 07+ is this an issue that needs to be addressed? I read every post and saw the question multiple times with no answer? I also read the DIY write up, stating that there are (2) 3rd pressure sensors and(1) 4th pressure sensor. But are the 07 trannys having issues?

I've scanned through most of this thread and can't find the answer to my question. Does replacing these sensors stop the whirring/whining noise from happening in 1st/2nd/3rd gear?

So even though this is proven to cure the death shudder you would not replace the sensors and just wait it out for another month and replace the entire trans?
Even though it greatly improves shift quality you would not replace the sensors?
Obviously threre's something wrong when it's shuddering or when the sensors vastly improve shift quality. You can't imagine the difference.
I don't get you. We found the cure to these transmission problems and you dismiss it as nothing. Next time you experience the shudder, keep in mind what you said here and don't spend the $77 to cure it.
And Mike, don't take this the wrong way but your auto classes only go so far. I've caught you plenty times on BITOG and here where it was obvious you don't have a complete grasp on some subjects.

I do not agree with you that these sensors should be replaced without performing a proper diagnosis. My friend who is an Acura tech at a dealer said that he has been doing a few transmission repairs on 3G TLs lately and a number of them have been because of shudder complaints. In those cases, the torque converter was replaced. Therefore, I suggest that anyone who is experiencing a transmission problem should contact their dealer and schedule an appointment for a proper diagnosis before attempting to correct the problem themselves, especially if the vehicle is still under warranty.
If you look at the function of these sensors, they affect TCC lockup. The electronics are causing the mechanical failures. It makes sense to fix the cause, not the effect. Personally I would go after the $80 root cause than the $2,500 end result.
I'm not sure why you attack this fix so bad but it flat out works as is evidenced with a 90% success rate even on units that were shuddering already.

I have no faith in Acura technicians. Most of them are nothing more than code readers and part replacers.

My argument is that it's apparent they continually get worse over time. Shifts get sloppier and we all know that means more wear. That's why my trans guy said he recommends every 60K as PM regardless of whether there's a shudder. One problem is we don't always realize how bad the shifts have gotten because it happens slowly. Once you replace these sensors the car feels like a new car again and you realize how bad the shifts are.

great thread here!
my car recently went out of the extended warranty. right before that, I had the flashing D light on the dash, took it in, and they diagnosed and replaced the 4th gear pressure switch.
I never noticed any issues, but as soon as the light started flashing, I took it in, especially since my warranty was going to be up soon.
another issue I've always had is when slowing down to a stop, I notice that all of the sudden the car will slowdown much faster like you stomped the brake harder. I always assumed that it was the rear brakes kicking in more since the TL uses rear brakes more than other cars do. after reading through all of this, I wonder if its the 3rd gear pressure switch during the downshift from 3 to 2......
anyway, I will be ordering the 3rd gear switch to go along with the tranny cooler i ordered yesterday!
will have full pics and a write up on the install of both once they come in!

Alright, I just did this. Changed the 3rd and 4th gear sensor and first impression, smooth shifts, and the down shifting is much much better. Now, I don't have to wait for the tranny to shift down and it was taking like forever. Now, it is right away and smooth.
This coming up weekend, I will be doing the 3x3 with the Amsoil ATF.

i changed these switches about 2000 miles ago. at first it seemed that the shudder dissapeared when shifting from park to drive and reverse. but now it shudders again. the shifts while driving honestly feel the same as they did before.
so overall i dont think it changed anything but if it helps my tranny live longer then im fine with that

If these parts went bad would the car throw a code?
Reason I ask is cuz i have read this thread and was going to replace 28600-P7W-003 and the other swicth soon, well sooner then later..
This is my 3rd tranny and this is suppose to be a newer one I got it put in my 01 CL-s in late 05 when my car had 100K and now it has 168K.
I change the fluid 3 times all-ready and the fluid smells good and is red VERY CLEAN.
I never abused the car or used SS mode.
\Today when driving to work my car throws a code P0740 (Torque converter clutch solenoid circuit) My car shifts fine and drives normal..
If i replace these switches u guys think my codes will go away or do I have a bigger problem then just these 2 switches?

Never mind, they are color coded so I didnt have trouble with them. I notice the car shifts more smoth now but I still experience a little bump when chaning from 2 to 3 and from 3 to 4th gear. It doesnt always happen but its there. I'm going to floor it and see how it shift tonight when I get off work.

I've been watching this thread and wondering if replacing the two pressure switches would fix the hard shift problem I often encounter going from 2nd to 3rd. I'll be selling the car within the next month or so, just as soon as my new one arrives, so I wasn't sure I wanted to invest the $80. However, I figured if such a simple fix could solve the issue, I owed it to the future owner to give it a shot.
Well, I'm very happy to report that it worked! The car, even after 73K miles, shifts like it was new. I just wished I had done this months ago so that I could enjoy it for a while! BTW, I ordered the switches and washers from Delray Acura (acuraoemparts.com). Place the order Friday evening and they were at my door Wednesday afternoon.

What's DTC, I'm kinda a noob at this. Yes, lately it has felt funny under hard shifting/ acceleration. Not as crisp as it use to be.
How long is the standard powertrain warrenty? Maybe I'll just take it in but I worry about the mods I've done (Wheels, Rims, Coilovers, RSB) and it's affect on the warrenty.
